I'll never forget that time I snuck backstage at the Pound in SF and drank all their beer and listened to them speaking Swedish for like an hour before he asked "who the fuck is this guy?"
I used to work at a metal record store in the 90's. We promoted Entombed and got to hang with the on the Wolverine Blues tour. LG was the best. Just a down to earth dude that like to hand. LG you will be missed.
I've been recording in Sunlight several times (yep used the peavey for some over dubs of feedback) and that guitar tone you get there is something else. It is not just not about the gear, the mike, it is also about the relaxed situation and the discussions about Music, politics, way of living that appear in the result. Sunlight....
Great video, but the real hidden secret to their tone on LHP was the blend of a maxed Boss DS1. The HM2 panned left and right and the DS1 down the middle.
I like the comment about LG "There's something wrong with that man. He's a beast". Totally agree. Have seen him live a few times and his voice is just massive. He's quite a small guy in stature, but just has a massive voice. The best thing is you can understand the lyrics he's singing too, which is unusual for such a heavy band. I love that man's voice
RIP LG Petrov. I was VERY surprised how good Entombed AD were, given that it was only him from the classic lineup. In my opinion, he was the only singer that could replace Max in Sepultura in 1997. Classic band and classic singer!
Funny you should say that LG could replace Max. I have never thought about that really, but both of them is on my list of favorite metal vocalists. I like that they have more like harsh and agressive singing compared to like Deathcore vocals, it's more raw and sound less controlled than what it probably is. Others on my list is Phil Anselmo from Pantera (and 9000 other bands...), and Corey Taylor from Slipknot. They also have that agressive and just very harsh style of singing, that style is my favorite! 🤘

Huge tone! Can't wait to hear your pickups, the way you describe them, seems like they would be the perfect upgrade for my baritone
All I know is that Entombed's cover of "Under the Sun" is the heaviest song I've ever heard. Unreal. Great job. That Sunlight tone is still my all-time favorite tone.
This is awesome man. Most of your videos and references to bands totally correspond with my history (80s thrash/death metal). I just heard Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't Bring Me Down, and didnt remember how friggin thick and heavy their guitars were on that recording. Similar to Pestilence with a more focused bottom. That would be cool if you looked into that sound in a future video. Thanks for the videos and work man.
Awesome as usual :) People have it easy nowadays with the internet at their fingertips to get info like this. I remember being so frustrated at not being able to get anywhere remotely close to this tone when i was a teen, that i felt like giving up playing guitar.
This channel is so underrated!!! Freaking love this channel! And have gotten every tone because of you! Thank you for helping me out in my times of need hahahaa
Hey Owen, as always, loving these videos. Here’s an interesting (maybe a tad too underground?) suggestion for you. Mortician! Never have I heard a bass or guitar replicated with their ‘tone’ would love to find out more about what they use for sure.
My old band from High school I used a peavey special 130 and the HM-2. It worked. For some reason the HM-2 pairs pretty nice with the old Peavey solid state amps. Great video by the way.
Dude! Great job on the vocals, man! Wasn't expecting that! First time I heard Entombed was on Beavis and Butthead and I thought... "No way! Wolverine is my favorite X-Man"! Lol. Yeah, they're nasty with the hm-2 thing going on and some kind of swampy groove thing happening. Killer band way to overlooked for sure. Great job as always, thanks for helping me re-live the childhood Wonder of discovering amazing heavy fucking metaaaal!!!
Great video man. I love your approach to tone and the dry sense of humour. I also like how you talk about the playing behind the sound. Hell yeah LG bellowed like no one else. Nicke hit those drums like they owed him money. Alex and Uffe just so locked in riffwise. It was that intensity that really brought the HM-2 vibe to another level, more than the other Swedish DM bands I've heard.
After watching, i immediately bought one of these mics ( NOS condition!) For 20 bucks plus 8.95 shipping. I leave these tips on cheap but awesome gear. Your vid on home audio speakers is awesome too. Do more things like this, please. Share the secrets. Thanks
Entombed really appealed to me as someone coming from punk/hardcore like as in bad brains hardcore not less shreddy metal bands. And their speed and intensity on left hand path sold death metal for me.
I used to have a Peavey Envoy 110 from the early 90's. It just recently died on me. I do have the HM-2 pedal, so I'm part of the way there. Thanks for the video! Take care, Sam.
That killer tone - great stuff! I know you've done an Obituary vid already, but I've often wondered how they got that really scuzzy, buzzsaw tone on side A of Slowly We Rot. It's so intense and it always surprised me that more bands didn't try and recreate that tone with the same enthusiasm demonstrated for the Sunlight sound. Any suggestions welcome. Keep up the great work!!!
I could put words here as to just how Entombed made an impact on me but I see others here have done a much better job at that. I will say thoh that bands like Entombed and type o negative are one of a kind and we all feel the absence when they are gone.
Brilliant! Great tone, great editing and thanks for the details, you always discover and reveal secrets! I'll try to inform other youtubers about your pickup request for reviews. About the band to cover suggestion: maybe nothing special but I like very much Paradise Lost's tone :)
CIRCLE OF TONE. Yes I basically drool over their entire discography, i've seen them live in around '94 and they have a place in my heart, but Icon is my favorite album and maybe Remembrance and True Belief my favorite tracks, and Christendom :)
Ooh, I would lovw to hear the Crowbar tone from the 1993 self-titled. I know it's a Charvel San Dimas into a Randall through a metalzone, but I know there would be more to it than that...
Have your subscriptions improved since the new year? I like every video you make even if i'm not a fan of the band incase that helps since you do an amazing job everytime
DeanRazor nah my subs have stagnated. I’m still going up but I jumped 10k in a few weeks then that stopped to 10-20 a day :-( I think the dark bands I’ve been covering has dinged me due to the algorithm. I got a bump from Glenn Frickers shout-out but that stopped after a few hours. It’s tough going. If it stays at this pace, I’ll have to cancel the channel by Summer. TH-cam are trying to neuter content. Family friendly blandness.
I know your heart and passion lies with extreme and old school metal, but maybe if you took a look at more contemporary metal/hard rock bands I think you could reach a wider audience. The "Sound like [Band X]" on Andertons get a ton of views, and you are basically the deep and detailed version of that. Maybe you can also work with modern manufacturers and push their gear. There's no shame in commercialization if it keeps you afloat and supports you.
For example, your COT100 amp sounds awesome, but that's custom made right? You could get in touch with an amp manufacturer (let's say Victory) and use their gear instead. Besides getting a free amp-head, you could work a small deal for £X for each video you name drop the gear in. More importantly, when people search for that gear, your videos will pop up, leading to more organic traffic.
Another: You insist on being 100% authentic to the gear they use as much of the time, but you *COULD* compare modern digital offerings to "the real deal". Ola Englund and Spectre Sound Studios does something like this some times.
I think once you release the tonewood videos, you should see an increase in views/subs. I think that hits a wider audience than extreme metal. Also, more stuff like that Robert Johnson video. that was awesome. Also, should talk to the tone king. He's a nice guy that loves distortion.
Man, you make the best vids to watch before going to sleep, I barely stay awake till the end! Just kidding, they may be long, but really interesting. We're from the same generation and musical background so thanks a lot for the quality content.
Great video again dude.Entombed always had that one special sound that blew me everytime. And it is what it is.To get a dirty, nasty and brutal metal sound, some dirty and nasty gear will help alot.Heavy greetings!
Torment Yt yep. It’s easy though. Zero mixing/plugins/vst eq etc on guitars/bass. left right for guitars and bass down the middle. I make sure I get it right at the mic so I don’t have to mix. So if something lacks a frequency instead of looking for a VST parametric eq I reach for a mic that can hear that freq or move mics until I get it. I don’t even use a mastering plugin. EDIT: I do use a tape simulator VST now and then for the bands who went to tape. Nothing special though, it was the one that comes with Sonar platinum. Drums are ezdrummer 2 with about 7 additional kits that I mix n match. On vocals I used isotope nectar and breverb plus devillok.
Great vid ..i get a good Entombed (my fav band) tone with a Behringer HM300 and a Peavey 6505 on the green channel with a touch of gain from the amp too (being a dirty amp it cant be avoided lol) EMG 81-85's on my Randy Rhoads PRXMG tuned down to C ...sounds heavy as balls!! lol ..will get one of them mics and see how that works, cheers for the tips!
According to the liner notes on Left Hand Path it was the HM2 pedal in addition to another overdrive pedal (not sure what one..maybe Super Overdrive) and they used Ibanez X series guitars which you can see on the Left Hand Path music video.
Thanks. I got the info from Tomas Skogsberg the dude who recorded it. The other pedal may have been solos or other style distortions on the album. It would be interesting to find out what that was. Music vids don't necessarily mean they used that in the studio though. I've made that mistake before haha.
It’s a prototype for testing wood etc. it’s more for tonewood demos. I have matching bodies with different wood species. It’s a bolt on. I’ll be bringing out a proper guitar with different headstock/body shape but still a general LP style with that color. That will be a set neck. In a month or so I’ll be posting the first of 4 tonewood videos and you will hear that guitar with 3 different bodies.
Finally! I fucking adore Entombed. Left hand path and Wolverine Blues are among my favourite albums and I can finally nail the tone. Fantastic! Also what do you think of mastodon, I think they use marshalls so you might be able to hit the mark.
@@TH-camSucks666 They didn't use a Bandit, for Left Hand Path they used a Studio Pro 40W, they started using Bandit from Clandestine onwards. Plus Bandit isn't a 30W combo lmao, the weakest Bandit that I know of from the top of my head was the 65W Solo 65 series or something.
Hey Owen-great stuff, man! I'm not sure if I'm more impressed with your dedication or your voice! Love the moon burst! Um....so, I'm going to assume you picked up that cardboard Edward for this video....yeah, that must be it.
I'd love to see you try to get the tone on Obsolete from Fear Factory. I've been trying for a while but Im missing something on it :c. Probably my favorite metal guitar tone ever. Dirty AF :D
The guitar in the centre of the mix was supposedly a ds1. I've seen Alex Hellid play entombed gigs with just a ds1 and mxr micro amp as drives on his board and sound the same.
I'd only seen the cabs from a distance and assumed they were some home made cabs that they'd built to their own spec. Just been to the website and had a look and they do look nice. Can't quite see my beloved being into the idea of me getting another cab... also I recon shipping from the states would be killer.
One recommendation I would make is to have some quiet instrumental music going on during the talking parts to ask the electronic noise and fill in the gaps.
And I get what you mean. I'm a younger dude and I am certainly accustomed to most of the content I watch having something to fill in the dead air, and that's just my preference and it may not be yours. It can be a good way to show off some of your own music though.
More contemporally yet they have become a absolute classic and one of the most influencial bands of the last decade: Watain. Please do something about the Sound of Watain!
I think the trick to the Peavey Bandit is to run it as a clean platform and then run distrotrion pedals through it, even better if you stack 2 overdrive together like a RAT with a TS style pedal (set both at lower gains as the grit of the 2 together add up in the end). Maybe it doesn't sound good with the HM2? Or maybe try boosting the HM2 with something else before it. Great video btw!
Thanks man. Appreciate you watching. I tend to tease bandit owners. I can't help myself. By the time you purchased enough pedals to get it to sound good ypu could have bought a tube combo.
Hahaha, you are probably right about that mate :) I just recently managed to get the best tone ever for recording for almost no money: joyo american sound pedal. There goes my amp :) (ok, probably not the best for recording metal, maybe if you scoop the mids)
I just picked up one of these bad boys for the very same purpose. How did you remove the grill/ball? Mine only seems to unscrew half way down, and just wanted to check the condition of it etc. Thanks.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Ah, seems to work okay, but definitely doesn't come apart like the Shure sm58 does. Was also gonna give it a go with the grill removed, but there goes that idea haha.
Great video! Thank you very much! Is there any specific difference between ATM41 and ATM41HE or will the HE also do the job? Trying to get one of those, but could only find the HE version used. Maybe you can help?! Thanks and keep it rippin!
The ATM41 had a cardioid polar pattern while the ATM41HE had a hypercardioid polar pattern. The difference in the polar patterns may cause some change in tonality. The ATM41HE also uses neodymium magnet due to which it has higher output than the ATM41. The kind of magnet impacts the tonality too.
I was lucky to get an hm2 back in about '88 as my first and only pedal, had no idea how it compared with other pedals but it was named heavy metal so that was all I needed to know to choose it. Always played it with bass and gain maxxed and treble around 2/3 to 3/4 into a marshall with bass and treble maxxed and mid at zero. It was as close to the Bolt Thrower sound as I could get with what I had (no idea what my guitar was though, black with 'Celebrity' on the headstock). Not changed the settings on the HM2 in 30 years :D
Rest In Peace LG Petrov. Voice of a generation, and a bloody lovely guy, who never gave up.
Fkn gutted.

They kept that formula later and live Uffe used HM2 and Alx DS1
Goosebumps when you played that slow Left Hand Path riff
mescaliiiiine Yep. Classic and later Entombed has to be covered.
It's the main theme from the movie PHANTASM, Entombed covered it themselves.

Came here because of the "Do not listen to youtubers" video, and i found a great channel!
Welcome to the circle!
Great stuff enjoyed this one as usual
Thanks man! Welcome back.
Finally! I fucking adore Entombed. Left hand path and Wolverine Blues are among my favourite albums and I can finally nail the tone. Fantastic! Also what do you think of mastodon, I think they use marshalls so you might be able to hit the mark.
Mastodon is a good shout. I love their drummer. One day I’ll tackle it.
Got some mad tOCK vibes from that, your voice is very distinguishable/unique. Love it
Yes! We have found the tOCK fan! Haha.
A thought just come to mine is it possible to play so hard and heavy that you actually bridge the gap between time and space!
Jack Byrd the Hm-2 pedal is the portal.
And Entombed is the key to the Riff(t)!!!
+CIRCLE OF TONE. God love you and we're on the same plane brother. I was worried it was just me!
:-)
Time and space are already intrinsically linked so much so that they're referred together as Timespace by the scientific community.
Nice work Owen!
Paul Nyman cheers Paul! Welcome back!
I have had a peavey bandit combo i turned into a head that ive had for sale on a website for a year hundreds of views but no takers 😂😂😂😂
Haha.
that tone omg
It’s bananas. Thanks for watching.
Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 distortion pedal, a Boss DS-1, Peavey bandit 30 watt amp every thing open loud.
Lol. Yeahhhh....Edward was...for the “video”.
I'd love to see you try to get the tone on Obsolete from Fear Factory. I've been trying for a while but Im missing something on it :c. Probably my favorite metal guitar tone ever. Dirty AF :D
Osoch good shout.
Impossible, Dino's heads and amps were so modified from a hardware standpoint you'd never get it exact imho.
@@403Gypsyking, and also we can't have the tone from Dino's arms.
The guitar in the centre of the mix was supposedly a ds1. I've seen Alex Hellid play entombed gigs with just a ds1 and mxr micro amp as drives on his board and sound the same.
Yep i heard that may be in the mix x for the later stuff. Good Info. I need a DS1 for the next band I’m doing.
Yet another cool vid. Super heavy sound. Have you ever considered doing Neurosis or Converge?
Good shout. I use the same cabs as Neurosis live. The ear candy buzzbomb. Ridiculous for a 2x12.
I’ve tried that. I think it’s slightly...game show cheesy. But it’s a good idea.
And I get what you mean. I'm a younger dude and I am certainly accustomed to most of the content I watch having something to fill in the dead air, and that's just my preference and it may not be yours. It can be a good way to show off some of your own music though.
Nicely done!! Try doing devourment and or deicide next would love to like those
Deicide are amazing.
More contemporally yet they have become a absolute classic and one of the most influencial bands of the last decade: Watain. Please do something about the Sound of Watain!
Ohh. Good shout.
PLEASE! Samael "ceremony of opposites" tone!
What song is that at the beginning? I don't know it
Night of the vampire (its an old cover)
@@CIRCLEOFTONE old? i remember when it came out like it was yesterday... argghhh!
I just picked up one of these bad boys for the very same purpose. How did you remove the grill/ball? Mine only seems to unscrew half way down, and just wanted to check the condition of it etc. Thanks.
I didn't remove it. I think it's freewheeling. I just cleaned it as good as I could.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Ah, seems to work okay, but definitely doesn't come apart like the Shure sm58 does. Was also gonna give it a go with the grill removed, but there goes that idea haha.
Talking about Peavey bandit it cut through a JCM2000 stack in our rehearsal room and was very audible
They are snarky bitches.
Great video! Thank you very much! Is there any specific difference between ATM41 and ATM41HE or will the HE also do the job? Trying to get one of those, but could only find the HE version used. Maybe you can help?! Thanks and keep it rippin!
Glad you liked it Dennis. I've never tried the other versions. If it's cheap I'd buy it though. Cheers!
@@CIRCLEOFTONE It's 40€ on ebay, think I'll give it a try 🙂
The ATM41 had a cardioid polar pattern while the ATM41HE had a hypercardioid polar pattern. The difference in the polar patterns may cause some change in tonality.
The ATM41HE also uses neodymium magnet due to which it has higher output than the ATM41. The kind of magnet impacts the tonality too.
I would love to see one on Soilent Green or/and Cattle Decapitation
I was lucky to get an hm2 back in about '88 as my first and only pedal, had no idea how it compared with other pedals but it was named heavy metal so that was all I needed to know to choose it. Always played it with bass and gain maxxed and treble around 2/3 to 3/4 into a marshall with bass and treble maxxed and mid at zero. It was as close to the Bolt Thrower sound as I could get with what I had (no idea what my guitar was though, black with 'Celebrity' on the headstock). Not changed the settings on the HM2 in 30 years :D
I love your videos man. Very informative and entertaining. I know you’ve been struggling with your channel, have you thought about starting a patreon?
Bryan carter Yep I’ll probably do one if I get to 90k.
Every time i die, the locust, the melvins, korn if you own a 7. 😎 subscribed!
i have never heard of katana organic pickups...were can i get one?
I tried searching recently and can't find them anymore. They seem to be doing other styles now.
Peavey Bandit is an great amp! tipp: change the speaker
What type to still get that style of tone
I would really love to see a Strapping Young Lad! Tone video! No specific album!
I saw an acoustic set of his for 60 people. It was amazing. I’ll have to cover his DIY stuff as it’s relevant to an opinion I have on metal tone.
"City" would be awesome - it is still my favourite.
Cheeto dust on the mic is to dampen the upper bass to prevent it from getting boomy/woofy.
Haha. I can only hope it's cheeto dust.
Wow that was heavy. You'd never think of some equipment working that way.
Thanks man! It’s the heaviest thing I’ve done. That mic is awesome. The COT-100 amp helps too. Plus vampire fingers.
