The thing with Karelian pie is that its protected product. Dont know how well i can explain this, but lets try:
Theres a protected recepe for Karelian pie, which has to be used exactly like in the book or else you may not distribute them with that name if youre an owner of a bakery or a groceryshop. Its kinda like a protected trademark. The bad thing with that is, you cant make gluten/lactose free Karelia pie and call it that. So most of the times its called a rice pie.

    • @trumpjongun8831
      @trumpjongun8831 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Dough of Karelian pie has a lot more rye flour than dough in Rice pies.
That's the biggest difference and real Karelian pie is much better.
Atleast 50% of flours have to be rye flour, then it's real Karelian pie.
Rice pies from a food stores are pretty bad.

And your description of Dallaspulla is spot on. :) There are already comments about eating lihapiirakka and pasteija heated, but I think they can be had both ways. I've found out that some meat pies are even better when eaten room temperature. Also there is a "version" of lihapiirakka called lörtsy, they come with various fillings, meat-rice, apple, apricot and so on. Some can be found in stores, but the best are usually at market places like Kauppatori and if you ever go to Savonlinna and other parts of eastern Finland then it is a must try. :D

Funny video once again! You should try "vuoksen piirakka" they look like "karjalanpiirakka" but they are much smaller ones(like half of the size of karjalanpiirakka) and they are even better and maybe little more sweetier. You can buy them almost from everywhere. Also you can buy many of those exactly same fazer products like dallaspulla, vuoksen piirakka and karlajanpiirakka from the frozen food sections in stores and you can have them in your freezer and just put them in the oven for a bit and you have loads of those delicious dallaspullas almost instantly!

Lihapiirakat are so freaking gooooood! Two sausages, some ketchup, relish, a very light tap of mustard, a boiled or fried egg, all the previous warmed and then plenty of salad and cucumber. It is heavenly. Kalakukko is good too, like sure I only eat the crust with a little butter on it and my sister only eats the fish, but the older folk seem to like all of it at once.

Congratulations on the baby! One pastry that is kind of traditional is what is called a viineri, flaky pastry with the same kind of vanilla custard as in dallaspulla accompanied by raspberry jam. Mega sweet but a staple favorite of elderly people

Yep, it's cardamom not cinnamon. By the way, you can sprinkle some to your coffee filter with your coffee to added taste. Makes it perfect for autumn. Oh and try and find rahkapulla with raisins to taste some time and herrasväen pikkuleivät, or lusikkaleivät how those are called too, would go well with coffee too!

Congratulations on the baby! If you like the lihapiirakka, you should try out the small bakery versions of it, they are so much better than the factory produced ones. Maybe you could do a video where you taste different lihapiirakkas from different makers? :D

the "perunapiirakka" is actually the original karelian pie. The rice version is newer, but it became way more popular since everyone liked them.

Watching this is like torture. I was diagnosed with celiac disease about five years ago so I can't eat any of those products you just tried. But I used to love most of them and I remember vividly (especially after seeing this viedo) how they taste. There are gluten free variants of some of them, but not all. Great video, Dave! Greetings from Nykarleby! :)

I was in Finland this summer and I bought a couple of what I thought was regular croissants in a hurry. When I took a bite from one it was filled with some kind of cream cheese and bacon! What the hell Finland, it was delicious!! You can’t find them here in Norway, at least not in the city where I live.

You need to eat karjalanpiirakka with butter or with egg butter and when its warm.
You need to microwave and slice the lihapiirakka and then put cheese, sausages and ketchup inside of it
Same with the pasteijas.. microwaved and with ketchup

Lihapiirakka; treat yourself by heating it up first on a pan (microwave oven makes the bun rubbery). Add some fillings to taste (ham, cheese, lettuce, whatever). Ketchup, mustard, cucumber salad (relish?). Savory stuff is better when hot.

Karelian pie with rise or potato - eat it hot with melted butter and I´ll asure you, you would not call any of them dry. Even better, if you get home made pies. I just can remember the feeling, when I was about eight and my granny made them. Was so good!!!

Congrats for the baby! Dallas pulla fav out of these. If you ever go to Kuopio try Hanna Partasen Lihapiirakka (a land renown classic) or the "Lihalörtsy" if you go to Savonlinna (another famous variant of lihapiirakka). Have you tried "Korvapuusti"? It's basically a cinnemon roll, but it's THE cinnemon roll around here. So good...

The rice. The potato ones are there just as a practical joke "mine" for foreigners who don't know the difference. Most of those pastries are meant to be eaten hot with toppings/spread (not the buns ofc)

  • @mikadsu

I dont know if you will anymore read this but for karelia pie the traditional way is to put eggbutter on top of it and warm or cold, but also I like to treat it as a bread and just normally put meat, cheese etc on it. Also warm or cold. Also the meatpie/lihapiirakka is more of hot food. Yes you can eat it cold but most will eat warm and maybe with ketchup or split the pie and put meat/cheese in the middle. So there is many ways to enjoy them and you should definetly try. There is one food called grahaminpiirkka which is pretty similar to lihapiirakka but worth the try. You can eat it the same way hot/cold and with extra stuffing or not. :)

The filling inside Carelia Pie is actually rice porridge. The history comes back when war refugees scattered away from Carelia (during WW II againts russia 1939, called Winter War) taking their recipe with them to inner Finland.

Heh, hi. The weird bun was vanhanajan vaniljaherkku viuhka. (Yeah, nice and short name) it's a vanilla filled bun, topped of with buttereyebun filling and streussel (streussel is a mix of flour, butter and sugar) we make them at my work place. 😊
