  • Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) "chargers", or EVSE, are becoming more common, which is a great thing, because charging while the EV is "at rest" is the way we should be refueling our cars (*discount code in description*). In some locations it can be difficult to find a J1772 (the standard used by non-Tesla EVs) EVSE, so it's a great idea to keep an adapter like this one in the car so you can charge in the most convenient way.
ShockFlo has generously provided an additional discount for the adapter below. FYI - I am not compensated in anyway if you use it. I wasn't aware they were going to do this when I filmed the review.
Use 20% off discount code '20H7ONMU' and get a -28 off coupon on Amazon, Final price is $83.99 for the ShockFlo J1772 EVs Adapter, Tesla to J1772 Adapter: www.amazon.com... (Code expires 2022-12-5)

@2:25 oof. Looking at the J1772 connector, it uses those little metal "micro fingers" on the pins. I've had some cheap off-brand J1772 handles with that design start overheating from ~1 year of continuous use. I think they have a habit of loosening up over time and getting hot.

Do you mean the pin elements that look similar to rifling? Most of the "guns" I've come across use this design on the inside of the load pins. It doesn't seem to be related to up-front cost of the unit, but since I don't have access to the BOM for any of them it's impossible for me to comment on whether that aspect of the device is cheap relative to the overall cost of materials. I have yet to experience overheating on any EV component, but that could be related to the amount of time I have been using them. Hard to say. I will definitely keep an eye out for it as the devices age. Overheating is a problem worth paying attention to. It would be great if you could email photos of the failure states and details around which devices failed to me (andrew@missingremote.com), I would be more than happy to investigate further. Thanks.

Shockflo also has another adapter, but this is a bit smaller, a little less pricy, and goes up to 80A. I see they sell both. Why would you buy the more expensive adaptor that is less capable?

Great question. As I noted in the video, ShockFlo provided this adapter for review. AFAIK, the 80A adapter wasn't available when they provided this one. It seems like a solid option, but the lack of a latch concerns me somewhat. The J-1772 port isn't an interference fit.

The Shockflo seems to take a good amount of effort to seat into the car's charging port on both our EVs, but does seem to work well. This was also mentioned by a review of Amazon. Does yours take a good push to seat it so it will connect and charge?

I wouldn't say that it takes an unusual amount of force to seat it, but the sample I have does require an enthusiastic push to make it latch. That's fairly common with new J-1772 "guns", the water seal on the inside can be firm, and takes some time to break in. I've had that happen with some of the EVSE I've played with.

What can I buy that will charge my Niro at a level 3 or lower charger

This adapter will work with Level 1 & Level 2 Tesla AC EVSE (chargers). Tesla recently started retrofitting some of their Superchargers ("Level 3" DCFC) with an adapter that will allow CCS cars, like the Niro, to charge there. Unfortunately, that is the only solution available for that. Just need to wait for Tesla to finish retrofitting, or deploying the newer version of their DCFC with the CCS adapter built in.
