  • Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation is currently spearheading an aggressive effort to restore C&O 2716. No. 2716 is a class K-4 2-8-4 "Kanawha" type steam locomotive built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
In addition to their plans to restore no. 2716 to service, Kentucky Steam has aggressive plans to turn their campus into a tourist attraction, called The Yard, that will help invigorate the local economy of Estill County.
We visited the folks at Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation in March of 2021 and sat down with their Chief Mechanical Officer, Jason Sobczynski. Make yourself comfortable as Jason fills you in on the organization's history, latest work, and plans for the future.

I am very appreciative for the video. I admire the idea of engaging in the community and bringing the public together, especially with the steam locomotive being a large center point. It’s wonderful to see another grand piece of the past being preserved and eventually returned to operation. Using TH-cam and the internet to document and spread information on this endeavor is an absolutely ingenious idea, although it is nothing new, it is still a privilege to be able to see this.
I don’t know what the future will bring, but I hope to carry out the same or a similar prospect in my area. Around here, tourism is nonexistent, and to be honest, we have nothing of notability besides being on Route 66. A semi-abandoned rail-line lays not far from the interstate, and would serve as a great point of attraction for the area...
Getting back to 2716, I have been following this group for some time, and I am quite proud as well as enamored by their work and continuous determination towards this project. Hats off to you folks that make this happen. 👍

You Guys Should talk with Ross Rowland About Possibly Moving The 614 To Ravenna, So 2716 Can Reunite with her old Stablemate.

Great Interview! I've been wondering about the progress of the 2716 and how close they are to operating it, from what's said it sounds like that day will be upon us soon!

6:02 that image is one of my favorites of the move because the smoke from the diesel makes it look like the locomotive has a fire in it and that there is smoke coming out of the stack

At the rate you are working, when do you think 2716 will be able to run under her own power again?
Also, I herd that CSX is going to buy Pam Am Railways, if that happens, will you consider operating 2716 over that trackage. The only main line steam locomotive in that part of the country is Conway Scenic Railroad #7470 but i don't think it will ever leave its home rails. Seeing 2716 up in New England would be nice.

Its a shame the group has more or less completely shifted focus away from the locomotive towards their big "economic redevelopment" project; with the last publicly announced work completed on it being ..... well the firebox work in 2021. KSHC at this point is just hording locomotives both steam and diesel, and not doing a damn thing with them in terms of restoration. They are more than happy to announce "oh hey we just had a bunch of parts from the 1940s donated from a railroad" or "hey we just got another switcher" or "hey we got another grant to redevelop the land"... oh yeah and lets not forget "oh hey good news everyone we just signed an agreement for 2716 to run up in NEW ENGLAND on a short line for several years immediately after she's restored instead of letting her roam her home turf first."
I donate funds to groups that are open and honest with their progress on the work with a locomotive in their custody..... KSHC hasnt shown they deserve so much as wooden nickel from me.
