  • We recently sat down with Rob Gardner of American Steam Railroad to discuss the ongoing efforts to restore Reading 2100 to service. The goal of the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association is to educate and inspire another generation about the golden era of steam railroading. Great luck to yall and all the best! I got to see my first mainline steam engine yesterday morning( I had seen the narrow gauge in Colorado) when UP 4014 came through my home town pulling hard on her hitch. Steam locos where my first love!

    3:15 when i saw that member torching those ditch lights and tearing them off, my heart jumped for joy, mainly because, to me, that meant the FERROEQUUS livery/design was truly dead, and 2100 would soon be back to her full Reading glory

      I found a pic of 2100’s modern looking switch box and well.....
      1. What does the white stand-alone switch do?
      2. What is a “Bach Simpson” and what does that do for steam engines?
      3. Does “Main power” mean cutting off all electric power to the box?

      Hi Joe, yes, the 1352 is in our operating plans. First though, approximately $100,000 needs raised to move the 1352 from Taylorville, IL to Cleveland, OH. The 2100 will be returned to operation first, and then attention will be given to the 1352 and its future. For anyone that wishes to donate to 1352, donations can be made and earmarked for that project. Please consider joining ASR or making a donation. When you own your own locomotive I guess you can pronounce Oregon any way you like lol

  • @jacobramsey7624
    @jacobramsey7624 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It sounds like the locomotive spent alot of time in storage after being brought back to service severial times. For all the time, money, and effort I hope the engine sees more than just a few years of operation or a few runs. I was told that a leagley a steam locomotive could operate for 15 strate years before needing a major inspection

    • @forrestnace2589
      @forrestnace2589 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jacob, yes, the locomotive has spent a good deal of time in storage over the past 30 years, however many items dating back to the full restoration in the late 1980's are still in very good condition. FRA rules state the the comprehensive 1,472 inspections must be done every 1,472 days of service , or every 15 years, whichever comes first. For steam locomotives operated frequently, such as at the Strasburg RR, the 1472 inspection may come before the 15 year timeline. For the 2100 and our operating plan, we will probably meet the 15 year timeline first, like other mainline steam locomotives (765, 611, 3751, 1225, etc.).

      @@forrestnace2589 Whow, i had no idea that you guys owned all thous steam locomotives, thats cool! And thanks for telling me about the inspection rulls. Question, where do you operate your locomotives? Is it on the main line or do you own a branch line for shorter trips? Also with the possibility of CSX buying PanAm railways in Northern New England is there a posably of main line steam comming to thouse states?

      @@jacobramsey7624 Hi Jacob, we own the Frisco 2-8-2 no. 1352, and lease the Reading 4-8-4 no. 2100. The 1352 is in need of a complete restoration, while the 2100 can be operational within 12 months if the $195,000 needed to finish the work is raised in that period of time. The 2100 will be operated on any main line, short line, branch line, tourist railroad, or museum we receive agreements from to feasibly operate at.
