I Made A Cello

  • In this video, I build a working cello out of an old wooden box.
    Steps:
    1. Intro 0:00
    2. Buying hardware 1:44
    3. Buying wood 3:03
    4. Building the cello 5:05
    5. Playing the cello 10:07
    Random observations:
    - The scale length on a cello roughly 27.4"
    - If you're going to build a cello out of a box and you plan for it to be a four-string cello like mine, you should make it with a fairly narrow box, otherwise the outer two strings will be very hard to play. The box I chose was too wide. Ideally, the box should be no wider than the narrowest part of the cello (approx. 9 1/2 inches). The narrow parts are called the "waist" or "center bouts".
    - Cello necks are rounded to match for the layout of the strings. Mine is flat which means that the middle two strings are higher than the outer two strings.
    - When you buy a cello bridge, you really just buying a bridge blank-it comes with a square top that needs to be sanded into a point. It also needs to be filed down to be the right height for your cello. I did this with a power sander-not exactly a precision instrument.
    - Cello tailpieces are very long compared to the floating bridges on hollow body electric guitars and basses. The thing that connects the tailpiece to the end pin is called a "tailgut".
    - Ukulele tuners work better than you'd think with cello strings. We'll see how they last.
    - All classical bowed string instruments have sound posts-essentially a short wooden dowel that runs from the sounding boar to the back of the instrument. These are almost always located just under the bridge. I put one in my instrument, too, and it seems to help keep the body from caving in.
    - These are the cello strings I purchased: www.ebay.com/itm/CELLO-STRING...

I like your casual attitude about instrument making at first. Then you got down to serious building and the cello was a success. First time build what could be better? Looks like a cigar box guitar on steroids with a bent neck, but it plays. Yes, you can be proud of this adventure. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate this kind of work. Violins came from a tradition that started with instruments made like this; restricting the making of instruments to specific forma restricts innovation and expression. Instrument making is an art no matter what instrument you're making, but you don't have to paint like rembrandt to be allowed to paint

    • @RobManser77

That’s an interesting point. Every cello I’ve ever seen copies the shape of an older model. I’m only aware of a handful of luthiers who have dared to make anything new. Maybe it’s the whole music world that’s the problem? You can’t compete at any sport unless you do that sport as written, and I’d guess you wouldn’t be let into an orchestra with a cello made from a suitcase.

When I started watching this it seemed funny, thinking it would be impossible to turn that briefcase into a resonance box. Well, I am now pretty much in awe with the result, and I would recommend for you to also shape two f-holes, in order to give the sound more breath. Congratulations! P.S.: When could you send it to Germany? :)

absolutely phenomenal job! for making a cello out of a piece of luggage, a 2x4, ukulele tuners, and some random cello bits and pieces, it sounds better than most cheap quality cellos. Your first attempt playing was also quite good, relatively even sound, firm bow hold, and despite a little bit of sliding, a steady bow. bravo!

I did one. I purchased the tailpiece, the endpin, the bridge and the scroll, and I built the box.
I wanted a silent cello to play until midnight in my flat without wakening the neighbors. It worked, the sound had a 43 db attenuation according to my sonometer.
It is transportable enough to be transported inside a small bag. The box is big enough to hold the bow.
      I used old Jargar strings.
I am not a good cellist but I enjoyed building this silent cello.

I love how 🎼🎼🎶🎶musicians tend to want to make their own instruments.. either because the instrument they want is too expensive or that they do it for experimentation purposes.. I made myself a didgeridoo.. I used a rubber part of a chair for the mouthpiece (I had to cut it open so that I can place my mouth and blow through it) and a metal rod from a bar that hung clothing.. It's not the best digeridoo.. but playing it makes a good sound.. I just recently chopped out a thick root from my apartment front yard with my dad's hatchet.. I'mma try and make a cello out of it.. I might need to actually purchase some parts first.. Let's see how this turns out! Thanks for the video!! It's inspirational for creativity 💖💖

Also, as this is not a traditional cello, you really didn't need the full size bridge, but angling the neck was the best solution.

Bass guitar machine heads are something I’ve wanted on cello since the beginning. I’d love to hear an electro-magnetic pickup, though - could be awesome, and very reminiscent of the whole “no rules” idea.

David. I like Your passion. You remind me one guy that is also passionate of making instruments but he is making woodwinds. His name is Linsey Pollak. Look his video about Cylisax and Flat Sax. Amazing. Keep on cultivating Your passion. Good Luck & Best Regards

Sounds great! Probably helps you have some experience playing violin but still. Lesson learned. Never let anybody tell you that you can't build a cello.

I made two cello-speakers. I made every thing except the strings.
