So...I made another violin?

  • In this video, I build a violin out of a paintbrush box I found at a craft store.
Two videos ago, I built a violin from scratch. At one point while I was working on that video, I began to doubt my ability to construct a playable neck, so I ordered a pre-made neck from China. Well...that neck finally arrived. In this video, I build a new instrument by attaching that pre-made neck to a box I found at a craft store with surprising results.
The paintbrush box I used in this project is this one: rosagroup.com.ua/index.php?id.... I bought it from Slanchogled in Camden (go downstairs and they have wooden boxes on the left-hand side).
Violin necks like the one I purchased can be found on eBay: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...

Amateur, home, furniture and small boat builder here. A big part of elegance is simplicity. And beauty is so often tied To functionally. What a beautiful and elegant build! Ok, time for me to make a travel guitar!

Dude, you're insane. And that's why I'm subbing. Because you're infecting me and I just got into making instruments-- so your work is kinda egging me on. Only one problem-- no 2nd hand / thrift stores here... or... very few.

Violins are very beautiful, I love my 115 year old Amati copy. I've often thought though that a very similar violin sound can be achieved from a much simpler and cheaper design, as you have just proved.

Loving your work sir. Also love the fact that you are not UP all the time, and you speak like a human. I plan to start making wine box violins and adding a load of anglepoise springs but that's next summer's project.

Next violin you make, consider using a thru-the-top soundpost. You drill a 6mm hole thru the top under the right foot of the bridge. Easy to install and makes the violin a little louder.

@@DavidHilowitzMusic I tried it on a fiddle I built and definitely increased volume a bit... so it is probably better for fiddles with thicker tops and less ability to project. You can read about it here maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/322456-thru-the-top-soundpost/ For me, it didn't turn the instrument into a Stad, but it certainly made the soundpost installation much easier... my fiddle was, like yours, a flat top... so very difficult to get the soundpost jammed in correctly.

@@gervasegallant Doesn't need to be a Strad and cannot be one. Try building a perfect copy of any car whether Model T, classic VW Beetle, or Lexus LS. You can't. It will look the part and maybe even get 80 to 95% there if you're lucky(!) but it will not drive and feel exactly the same, even if you built it through reverse engineering! That's the thing with being highly specific and particular with requirements. Heck, the same model car by the same company built in different countries has different characteristics!

You are a "proper" pro violinist, so you can make anything sound good. I loved your videos showing string instruments made basically from junk. The "proper ones" haven’t changed much since the 18th century, and I have often wondered if the shapes and styles are the pinnacle of years (and tears) of experimentation by the Italian master craftsmen, or whether those graceful curves and f holes were created because they thought that would look nice? More aesthetic than functional design?
Has anybody done modern research and computer modelling to establish the ideal shape and body?
Your experiments show that pretty good results can be achieved without using precious woods hand carved for hours by expensive craftsmen, or beong coated with special varnishes made to secret formulas.
I play viola. It is an instrument whose design even after all these years has not been fully established. The 16” instrument is now regarded as standard, just 2” more than a violin but it seems huge in comparison. It is said that the ideal size for the C string to function and resonate properly is at least 18” but this is too big to be practical. I find one of the difficulties is that the upper bout is so wide that it makes playing any position above 3rd quite difficult. I have often wondered about experimenting with a long instrument that is much narrower at the upper (fingerboard) end. An area that seems ripe for more experiments. Your example shows it might be worth it.

I would recommend a channel by Mikhail Kovalchuk ( www.youtube.com/@Komist1 ) he does nothing but make violins of varying shapes and materials and tests them.
Fiberglass? Yep. Styrofoam? Yep. Cardboard? Yep. Plastic bottle? Yep. Oval? Yep. Acrylic, trapezoid, 1/16, viola, paper? Yep. He's got over 900 tests on his channel, so if you can imagine it, he's probably done it.
Although, I would say take it with a grain of salt, not everything on the internet is real, of course.

Nice experiment. If global trade to China gets cut off, we might have to make your plywood box violin. But for now, we can still get super cheap plywood violins (that actually look like a real violin and also sounds pretty good) for next to nothing from China.

Ok, Bruce miller’s (where you got the parts from) is sadly long gone, ‘twas a shop in a city called Aberdeen, I used to live there, went into that shop a bunch of times, was a great place, big, like, REALLY HUGE, but they were ever helpful if you needed stuff and were a bit of an institution in the city that is sorely missed by many Aberdonians!

I suspect it might be more resonant because the squared-off hourglass shape actually traps some standing waves in some of its corners. At least, it does with light, so I’d assume the wave behaviour is the same, especially since it’s sized to be similar to the wavelengths in order to resonate! While this is wide-open for the sound to resonate inside.

Hi David! Great vid and great work! I am amazed of the vibes it ended up rendering.
Quick question: How high is your bridge on the box violin?
B/c without the belly of the top wouldn‘t the bridge have to be pretty high to gee the angles right?

Awesome and inspiring video once again. There is a long thin (though wider that what you used here) Cigar Box by Drew Estates for their Undercrown Cigar line that you might be interested in using. It's slightly larger (maybe 1/4" all around) than an America License Plate on a car. I'm using one to make a license plate resonator guitar with. But it might make a nice violin as well. Also have you seen some of the cigar box violin/fiddles by "MorBanjo?" He cuts away the spaces between the bouts on standard cigar boxes, then just replaces that wood, either steaming and bending if the cuts are curved, or just framing it like making a picture frame.... Check out his videos.

Stereo voice is confusing, I really thought that it is something wrong with my headphones or audio interface because you moving your head while speaking and once the right mic is picking up your voice louder than the other mic, at some point your voice was mostly on the right side.
But cool violin project though :)
