There's nothing wrong with looking older. There's nothing wrong with being older. Ageing is a gift that so many don't get and I really wish people would stop making women (specifically) feel insecure about a perfectly natural process. Younger does not mean more beautiful and older does not mean less beautiful. Okay, I'm done now.
Well said! I feel exactly the same. Acceptance takes learning and understanding, and coming to know oneself well at every stage. It’s not automatic, just because we know intellectually that “age is a given.” Often it takes a bit of time to do this learning-to “get there.” We are all individuals who deal with life events and transitions in different ways, but mostly we all want to “Learn” to cope in ways that work for well for us in order to find and be our best, most vital (youthful?)selves. Justin & Dionne are doing that, and best of all, they are learning and doing that together. I find that positive and uplifting!@@stop_and_smell_the_roses
I started going gray when i was 31. I hated it then, and now at 70, i still hate it. My hair is blonde, with seasonal changes to keep it looking natural. My colorist makes certain that the gray goes away every 5-6 weeks. She also colors my eyebrows so they continue to look natural. My spouse’s family (brunette or black hair), have gone cold turkey gray. They look so much older than their years. I suppose at some point i won’t be able to keep up the hair coloring. When that happens I’ll pick a good looking gray, and go for it. Maybe 5 to 10 years from now.
Agree, it’s the wording “looking younger” instead of “looking your best” that can be off putting. I definitely want to look my best in my mid fifties just like I did in my mid twenties.
#3. Making sure the hair color goes well with your skin tone. As I have aged, I can tell certain hair and clothes colors that I used to look good in, don't work for me any more. I have actually gone to a much darker ashier blonde and find it doesn't wash me out as much. As always, love your content and videos! ❤
Hey!! Totally! That’s such a big one. People just get told to go lighter and I think it’s easy to overlook the other aspects of what looks good when it comes to hair color.
I freed myself from that nasty dying cycle. And you're right no man or woman looks good with dyed hair. It looks not good with your clothes not good with your makeup. I'll tell you what I love I'm so natural as gorgeous I have beautiful dark hair Platinum here oh my gosh my hair is so gorgeous. 10 years wasted my money on ridiculous hair dye. Freedom is to be natural that's the best !!! :-)
I 💯% disagree but you do you - I'm free with my box of color bcuz the look of any gray makes me FEEL OLD and look older than I feel. To each their own but it's certainly not a waste of money - a waste of money to me is constantly buying coffee/drinks everywhere when I can make them at home. I'll save there. =)@@katherinekeon7034
I think its wonderful that you have committed to learning about menopause so you can use that knowledge to help women in your salon!! It really does affect women in all manner of ways 😊❤
I find it interesting when people leave comments, saying that they like the way they wear their hair and they are sick of people telling them what looks good and what doesn’t. Well, no need to watch these videos if that’s how you feel! I just found Justin and I am finally realizing that maybe I can now explain to my hairdresser the cut that I have so desperately been trying to have and it just never turns out. I love your videos! I wish you were my stylist!
Just want to point out there are many women in there 50s and over . That have very short hair . Due to having it fall out ( cancer ) we really do feel bad enough without people commenting on how bad hair growing back looks . Just would like people to keep that in mind ❤
THANK YOU. Sometimes it's our own perception of it that makes us feel the way we do about certain lengths of hair.. I'm overweight and even though I've lost 70 pounds and have more to go I stil feel like a very short hairstyle will make my face look chubbier.. I'm losing it slowly with no surgery or Ozempic just pure grit and determination and I've always thought pixie haircuts are pretty maybe next year I'll try it we'll see..
You are lucky! I have neutral to warm skin tone, look better in warm beige, peach, or peach/pink, mauve and brown cosmetic colours (lips, shadow etc.). If I change to cooler tones (with a more rosier undertone to the skin), that suit gray hair so well then my complexion looks dead, it just looks SO wrong with those colours so I am struggling with the knowledge I may have to highlight with warm golden/dark golden foils to the end of my days! (58yo) :(
I went gray cold turkey, outside of using some funky colors (pigmented conditioners) along the way. I learned in beauty school that nature really does give us the color we should have. Love my gray. 40+ years of coloring and I've never had as many compliments as I've gotten when I let nature take it's course.
Wow. I have black hair that is turning auborn and lighter brown with white white hairs. Im debating just letting it go all white and wearing a crown! Just kidding. I have no idea what to do. But the white hairs go with my face.
I don't really agree, I am very pale and have very dark brown hair, I've always been asked if I was sick. When I make my hair clearer ,I don't get that question.
You are the kind of hairstylist I have wanted for years. Someone that considers many of the things you referred to in this video. Shape of face, skin tone, what cut makes you look your best :). If I only lived closer . . .
Just a friendly/cheap tip for dry lips… I had a really big problem with that. Turned out I was always dehydrated. I drink 9 Cups of water a day now & my lips aren’t dry & cracked anymore!
Love City Beauty products, so happy to see you sponsored by them. Also, love that you are addressing important aging issues around hair. Most relevant for me is creating shape and getting the color right (2 issues, I know). I believe any lengh can look good, provided the shape is complimentary to the individual. Thank you, both, cute delivery, as always.😘
Finding a hairdresser that can cut my hair in layers is so hard. I just cut it myself! Not too bad, if I don't say so myself. I can't face another expensive unflattering cut.
Same here, too. IF I end up like a peeled onion, I can only be upset with myself. And it is free. I also quit ever letting anyone who is overweight, and/or unattractive, touch my hair. Maybe it is subconscious, but they always butcher my hair
@@deawallace3584That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Some people, like yourself, just don't look good no matter their hairstyle. Let's see if you're fat and/or ugly. You might not think so, but....
After being spoiled by the greatest hairdresser and friend for over30 years, I realize he can never be replaced. There was never a time that I didn’t feel my hair just felt right. He took the time, sectioned little bits to cut and blend. He knew my hair(4 cowlicks) and how it fell naturally. Shall I also say he was off the charts with color too. Are there any hairdressers out there that still take and schedule time enough time to take the time that truly make a difference? He passed away maybe 15 plus years ago. We were soul friends. He had many❤️. Love and light to Randy Jones of Jackson, Mississippi😇. Where are the natural born hairdressers?
Great video and timely for me. I’ve been letting my hair grow, and you are so right about the lack of shape. It’s really making my face look droopy and at 64 I don’t need any help with that! I was just telling myself … you need to do something with this hair!
Very timely video, Justin - I have thick fine half curly hair and I’m going in today to get a cut. My hair definitely wears me! I wear it in a short curly bob - that is when it’s not butchered into an old lady cut. Fingers crossed!
Awesome! So glad I can help! I hope it goes well. If you get a chance, look for some pics of shapes you like and things you don’t like. Take them to your stylist so you can better explain things. Then the two of you can decide together your best options. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out.
Many thanks for this. I am well past menopause with fine, thin, natural platinum hair that I love. I grew my hair out too over lockdown and have kept it long. I feel, however, that is needs more shape for lift, etc. Have you done, or do you have videos specifically for fine, thin hair that I can share with my stylist next month? Thank you, Justin!
#3 I made the mistake of trying to go blonde in hopes of having my silver strands grow in. Unfortunately (at 63), I only have about 24% of my gray coming at this point. The blonde was ok in the summer with a tan, but it made me look very faded out during the winter time. I have had all of that color cut off. My hair is much healthier, shinier, and more natural. Now I have a sprinkling of "salt and (dark brown) pepper", which works best with my natural coloring all year long.
I am 69 wear my hair longer , always wore it short then to a long bob for work mainly , but now i am retired i choose this longer style always make an effort to look the best i can .
I am 63 and a total blond. I am actually having my hair dyed silver. I LOVE THIS! It just gave me such a sophisticated look. LOVE IT! My hair will not turn grey - my mother's hair never did turn grey so I have to pay big time for mine. Now I just need shape like you mentioned. I'm vey lazy. No bangs, no curls. But I can grow it to my rear end. It is very fine and thin but strong. Oh and I use Nutrafol. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!! Thank you for showing us about hair for really hold people!
That’s awesome that you found that color for yourself! I love hearing that. Yes, I totally get the low maintenance lifestyle with her. Having some shape could change a lot, though, he may really like it. Definitely something to at minimum look into. Thanks for the feedback!
I’ll be 52 in 3 weeks, and I’ve never had my hair this long. It was definitely a result of the pandemic; I’m immunocompromised, so I still need to be very careful when I go out. Heading to the salon in a few days, and can’t wait to get some of this length off, lol.
Wish you lived closer. Everytime I get my haircut, it ends up not being what I had invisioned. It doesn't do any good to bring in a picture of what I am wanting because it almost always, ends up being waaaay shorter than I wanted. There is a two week after cut shock period, a two week period of it looking maybe not so bad, and then two weeks of it needs another cut. It doesn't seem to matter if I say "trim, shape, layer" or whatever and does not matter if I change styests. If I get a good cut, my hair is incredable, thick with a bit of curtl. Even though I get compliments on my hair, it seems that stylists want it to be short and set me up a six week appointment.
So sorry to hear that. I don’t think you’re alone. I’m not sure if you’ve tried this, but it may be worth it to use the photos to explain what you like and what you don’t like, then also make sure to show visual reference to what could be too short to write I also typically seem to still away from using any specific terms like players training, shit simply because those convene different things to different stylists another option would be to ask someone that has a similar hairstyle and ask them who they see. Then you can contact that salon and ask the seniors. Or ask to see someone who specializes in hair like yours. Then book a consultation before your haircut so you can talk and make sure that you think they’re a good fit before the cut appointment. Hope that helps a little.
This was me exactly for years. I felt like I only had 2 good hair weeks until my next cut! I get it. I finally found a stylist who has my hair type. She gets my trouble spots and quirks now. She will also cut it dry first, blowdrying it straight as my hair shrinks up. That way has worked the best for me and it's never too short.
SAME HERE, Justin thank you for your always great advice. Your makeover you did and WON for your Make Over Competition video looked absolutely amazing 😲.. I don't know if a stacked bob would look good on me my hair is thinning because of meds I'd like a combo Rachel haircut bob and a little Shag haircut but I'm nervous. If I don't like it it will grow out a complete Rachel haircut is hard to style according Jennifer Anniston so I have a less shaggy bob instead ..
I’ll be 55 soon and am just now starting to become annoyed with the greys coming in especially around my face. My stylist has been using this cool herringbone highlight technique that has made a difference. Not sure what I’m going to do if/when the greys completely take over because I have brunette hair (with 3 shades of high and lowlights), fair skin, and hazel eyes. Super light hair including grey completely washes me out, but I’m also very low maintenance (only get my hair cut and highlighted every 3 months). It’s going to be an interesting journey 😅
You’re fortunate that you can get your hair professionally done. I care for my parents and don’t have xtra money to care for myself professionally. I’m sure your hair is beautiful! 😉
Someone posted that grey hair is aging on another blog. What do you think? I sure was tired of coloring every month and now my hair is so much healthier. I hated grey roots. I feel blonde with lighter hair. It is freeing. I brightened my makeup which is crucial not to look washed out and went to a short shaped Bob. As a friend of mine said as growing hers out " I am not 40 any more."
It sounds to me like you are a lot more comfortable, and confident in your natural hair, which in turn will make you look younger. I think that’s the key - rocking what you’ve got! I’ve seen so many ‘before & afters’ of women who let their hair go natural, and yes, they look different, but most don’t look older, and I think most look better. I know it wasn’t my opinion you were seeking! Just throwing my 2 cents in there!
@@shelley37 I agree that grey hair doesnt mean o.k. you are old. If a woman is attractive she will still be pretty. I think the key is to wear make up and make some changes. It is easy to look washed out and that is aging. I have softened my lipstick and avoid drab clothing. The browns, tans, bridges do not work like when my hair was brown. Thank you for your input.
I’ve had more people tell me I look good since I’ve stopped dying my hair. They don’t mention my hair. They just say I look good. I think it’s because my dyed hair always looked fake even though I went to high end salons. I feel more comfortable and happy with my natural color.
I'm 57 with only a tiny amount of grey. I have my hair foiled and I remember a couple of years ago, my hairdresser used the wrong coloured toner which meant my hair looked too ashy/grey. I didn't realize till I looked in the mirror at home in the daylight.... OMG what a nasty shock!! 😂 Luckily the toner washed out quite quickly, but that day I realized that I will never let myself go grey.... some people just don't suit it at all. My two friends that are the same age as me are completely grey, and I know this sounds conceited but they look nearly 10 years older than me. I just wish we could move away from idea that once women reach a certain age they should cut their hair and let themselves go grey. If that's what some want then fair enough, but it's not for everyone and in fact can age certain people instantly. Do whatever makes you feel good ❤
One key item that I've never seen addressed during the past several years -- especially amidst the "curtain bang/part down the middle" rage -- is the fact that parting your hair in the middle makes your nose look bigger. This was something that was brought to my attention in the 70's, so I started paying attention, and realized it's true. I stopped doing it immediately. It's funny to me that with all the thousands of current "influencers" and experts out there, no one has ever mentioned it. It's so obvious. So in addition to implementing your rule that a middle part makes it difficult to create volume, so many women would be amazed at how much more flattering their face would look by a side part. No brainer.
Middle parts makes the nose look bigger and side parts makes the jaw look bigger. I guess it depends on what feature you want reduced. A few years ago I heard that a side part helps camoflauge facial asymetry. I'm not sure if the side swoop goes toward the side of the more symmetrical side of face or the less symmetrical. Maybe Justin can speak to this?
My problem is I need a stylist like you! I have looked and tried multiple people and they never really take the time to look at pictures I bring and really listen to what I want. Thank you for your video. I am now a subscriber.
Justin, great suggestions! Been watching all your videos and they are so helpful. I noticed you don’t yet have an episode on styling very thin hair. I would be happy to be a Guinea pig and send in photos to explain the challenges. I am going on 57, bleach/color my own hair and style it daily. I’ve tried every style imaginable but keep coming back to the same style (which I do like) but creates issues such as breakage, etc. Would love to see a thin hair video that doesn’t involve cutting all your hair off. 😂 P.S. Tell your wife she’s a beauty. 😊
The mistake concerning bangs. I like the butterfly cuts yet would like to see a video that addresses the issues that come with bangs and face framing. The do and don'ts. Please consider a future video on this topic. Thanks for your expertise.
I always appreciate your content. And. We need to change this culture from declaring aging to be bad. Enough already. It’s a form of prejudice. If an individual prefers to do things to not look like they are aging, great. But especially women are treated as less than as we age.
Whew right now my hair is definitely wearing me! I lost my hair to chemo 2 years ago, but the hair that is coming back is extremely thick and wiry. Curly in come spots but mostly just kind of kinky/wiry. It's taken me 2 years to get my hair to grow to my collar bone, but the top layers are much shorter. I am still taking an oral chemo drug, but the newest 2 inches is more flat and straight. I really want to continue to grow it, but am thinking of cutting it shorter just to get rid of some of the w worst hair. I am afraid if J do get it cut, then it will just be equally as unruly but shorter. I think your video has great advice!
It’s a struggle! I lost all of mine to chemo in 2019 but mine came back thinner and finer. I’ve kept it short for the most part but last fall mine developed a weird kink. It’s now gone thankfully but our hair seems to change over the first 3 years after. With mine shorter I’m struggling to find a hairstylist that can give me the right cut without looking older than my 52 years 😂😂 I finally scheduled an appt with someone in the city that seems to know more about styling you, not just cutting your hair. I hope so anyway!
My post chemo hair did eventually get better. But it’s been 15 years now. It used to be very straight and now, even all these years later, there’s a definite wave to it that I never had before. I’m embracing the difference. I think if you can stand it, continue to let it grow out. The added weight of it almost helps straighten it a bit. Then go ahead and have the worst cut when you decide on a style/shape. I hope your chemo treatment did the trick and you won’t have to go through that again. ❤
My best friend finished chemo a few years ago. All her life she had long, almost straight hair but when it grew back it was wiry and curly. It didn't suit her at all but I'd never say it. Now a couple years later her hair is long and almost straight again and she looks like herself. So don't lose hope, the most important thing is you (& my friend) are alive ❤❤❤!
I luv City Beauty products! Ty for the discount code. Everything u mentioned is absolutely correct & plays a part on yr hair texture, etc. when u reach Menopause. I have very long curly hair it’s coily. Long layers. I have an oval face. Olive skin tone. I’m now getting some “greys around the sides & top of my head.” My hair color is dark brown. I use to do foil highlights but I don’t like the damage to my hair n it does hide the grey. But, it’s a lot of upkeep. I usually where my hair blow out n it’s super shinny n looks twice as long. I’m 55 yrs old. I love long hair. I wear a part on the left side & flip my hair like a “Farah Faucet look” I like feathered back not towards my face. I have tons of volume n very thick hair. I do sometimes part in middle. As I can get away with either style. Curly I try to hide the part. So I have to explain to my hairstylist how to trim the layers so that when it’s “curly” it doesn’t look like big mushroom bush. Do u recommend a “U-cut in the back? Or a “V-cut in the back? Due to having the long curly hair past my back of my bra strap but very thick n healthy. I rarely use heat tools. Maybe twice a month. If curly I let air dry. I only use Paraben n Sulfate free Shampoo n Conditioner. I luv yr videos! I’m new to yr channel. Ty so much for yr insight. Please do more on curly hair even though I love it straight more often I still need the cut to focus on my curls n how they land especially the layers n in the back. Much appreciated! ❤❤
I love your videos, but the problem for some of us is, finding the hairstylist that can actually do a decent job, never mind a really fabulous job. I must live in no man's land with regard to hairstylists. Every one I've been to in the last 12 years has been somewhere between mediocre and just plain terrible. Do you have any suggestions about finding a great stylist? Any questions to ask, things to look for?
Thank you Justin for such informative vids. Much appreciated! I've been very spoiled since I had my own private stylist (my brother) for most of my life. He knew what I wanted before I did! Great shape, fun colors, different looks. When I had to find a stylist other than...well, it's been difficult and frustrating. Just to get a good shape 🙏 and I look around and everyone walks out looking the same😑 plus so many "stylists" don't come up with creative ideas. I know, it's tricky. People can be very locked in to what they think looks good. Hence the hesitation to offer something different. I too let my hair grow out and was doing my color as well. 🤫 I have fine curly hair and finally cut it myself. I wear scarves, etc. so i wasn't going to freak if it was horrible. I'm an excellent camouflager! But low and behold my hair looks just like a "do" I used to pay for. It's not bad if I do say so and I'm very judgie. Anyway, the search/solution goes on. Thanks again for all the tips. They really are helpful.
No matter what awesome hair style my daughter just puts her hair up in a bun but doesn’t like short hair. I agree with her that short hair takes more time to upkeep so I’m also guilty of keeping my hair long and braiding it and/or putting in a bun. I’m nearly 70 and still have full thick hair (genetics).
I’ve always had dark brown hair and have colored it for over 30+ years. I have recently gone much lighter and am in the process of deciding if I should just let the gray probably white) grow out or back to coloring it darker again. I personally don’t feel like the light color suits me but my husband says it does. I do not currently have a stylist as I have just moved so I am in a quandary as to what to do
Your wife is so down-to-earth and fun, on top of being a natural beauty! It is so nice to see a woman without fillers and plastic surgery. Wish my brows looked like that. Does she have her own channel? Would love to follow her beauty tips. 🙂
I just ordered the City Beauty Moisturizer… I have heard so much about it and I’m looking forward to giving it a try. Thank you for providing such a generous discount code! Do you have any suggestions for people who struggle w/ gray hair popping up so quickly? The gray starts creeping up shortly after I color my hair. I’ve been touching it up with Color Wow touch-up, but was hoping there was a better option out there?l 😂 Thx again!
Love your informative helpful videos! Question-“Matrix matte Definer beach clay” has been discontinued-Do you have a suggestion for a good replacement for this product? (I have a long pixie) After trying so many products I discovered this product from you-Thank you-other products leave my hair oily looking, weigh my hair down or just don’t hold. I found the 3 questions to ask your self when going for a pixie cut, or in my mind any cut, helpful. A great way to figure out a hair cut/style.
Hey Justin! I love your videos. Can you (and/or your wife) give me some options on fragrance free and clean hair care products? I am having a terrible autoimmune flare that has even my scalp broken out with eczema. I currently am working with the Maria Nila line, but I do love options. Oh, and my hair is a super short pixie, so I don’t use a whole lot of product!
Oh man, color. My hair grows 3/4 inch a MONTH. Coloring gets expensive even doing it myself. But I NEED color bc as an ash blonde I look sucky in gray. I think I'll just color the roots around my face and call it good. First impressions yanno. AND, ty for telling about the long hair parted in the middle with layers, kills any height needed. I'll have to watch your other vids to figure out how to combat that before I cut my long, thick, heavy, hair
This video is so helpful, Justin…in my opinion, Number 5 is the most important..Nutrition…especially during menopause and post menopausal, in your East Coast Mamas case!🤣…i have not had my hair shaped, in awhileeeeee…this gave me the push I need!…one thing, I wouldn’t use Dionna as a bad example for anything!..🤣🤣🤣…another great video!…thank you for the information, it doesn’t suck!!!!…say hi to Dionna from me!💜💜💜💜💜💜
I agree with what you said about women's hair--a little constructive criticism: You might want to trim your facial hair so that it doesn't look like it is going into your nose and into your mouth. It would be a cleaner look and more hygienic.
My hair is pretty long - almost down to my butt. I'm 60. I can't be bothered with short hair, having to do it properly every day, so my hair is always up in a bun. I'm starting to get some wisdom highlights. These video's are pretty good, but makes me question what I can do!!
The 1st mistake stood out to me the most. I have been growing out my hair ( at 56 yrs. old ive never really grown it long, so would like to now) I do have bangs, but I do feel like I don't have any shape. My hair has always been paper straight. Its one length ( besides the bangs). It is a little past my shoulders. I have thin hair, but alot of it. After watching this, I may have to ask my stylist about "shape", this was another great video!
Yes, thank you so much! You are spot on. That’s something that a lot of people fall into. It’s easy to want to grow your hair out but having a shape in mind can be really helpful. Definitely talk to your stylist about shaping the length for you, so that you have a style versus just having longer hair.
I'm looking back at this, and I ended up having my hair cut short with some layers and I love it! My hair now has shape and a little style. Its amazing what ther right cut will do!
Great question. It depends on the persons face shape. It’s more of a general idea than a comment to the specific model in the photo I used. As a rule of thumb though: if your face is on the fuller side, creating less volume on the sides (around your cheeks) will help to keep from adding too much fullness on the face. If your face is longer, having a bit of fullness on the sides will help offset the length in your face. If you’re trying to lift the face or accentuate cheekbone structure, having volume around the temple area and a bit less around the jaw or cheeks will help that a lot.
I just ran across some hair styles called “hush” which are texturized and layered lightly, with fringe around the face… coming from Taiwan influence? I just loved some and for sure am considering doing that yo my hair if I can find a stylist who knows how. Can you look into that cut and maybe talk about how it’s different from the shag cut. It’s similar but not the same. Would love to see what you think!! 🤩
Hi Justin! I lost 200 lbs recently and I'm stepping into a new chapter of my life. When things were very bad I cut off almost all my hair. Now that I'm healthy and my hair is growing out I'm at a bit of a loss. My faceshape has always been "round" but now after losing the weight It may be a different shape and I'm not really sure where to start My mom and grandmother had thin hair as they aged but I am told that extreme weightloss also causes hair thinning. So I'm currently rocking some fine hair that has no real shape to it. If you have any direction you could point me in I'd be beyond grateful. Thank you so much for the content. This video gave me a lot to think about! ♥ Christy
i think it would be helpful to tell this guy how much money you have to spend on your hair. how much time do you want to spend styling your hair everyday? then he can/should give you a realistic answer.
I’ve used your advice to have my hair cut into a bixie by a new hairdresser and I went prepared. She cut it ok but there was still too much bulk on the sides which made it look “blockish” as opposed to sleek. Oh well. Live and learn. I’ll be more specific next time. Thank you for these videos. They’re a huge help.
Good luck. You can tell a stylist but she can’t do what she doesn’t know how and she’ll never say words like, “ I don’t know how to do that”. Short hair takes more hair skills and I haven’t met him or her yet. Mind you, I haven’t tried often but I don’t need the train wreck.
I'm a young 59. I haven't changed my cut in 40 years except to let my fringe grow out. Since covid, I cut it at home; one inch off the bottom. It's fine and thin with a little wave at the nape. I put clips by my ears to give the illusion of more hair or bangs. I've had bad haircuts. When I went to the salon, they would use a detangler, which made any body I had disapear. If I blow dry it with a brush to smooth it, the hair breaks. My hair will hold a curl for a half an hour. I constantly battle static. When it's really bad, I put it up in a clip. I feel I'm in this hair style with no options.
Something great for the dry texture of gray hair is a diy coconut oil spray. Just take some filtered water (1/2 a cup?) and a teaspoon (or tablespoon, to preference) coconut oil, and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Put it in a little mister spray bottle and shake it up. Warm it in a glass full of hot water when you take your shower. Afterward, spray it on wet hair (don't forget your scalp if you have a dry scalp) and comb it through. Blow dry as usual. I came across this and it's worked wonders for frizzy gray hair. Cheap, easy, and non-toxic and works miracles.
Please come to my neck of the woods in Colorado and help me to actually have a style in my fine/thin hair! I promise, the view doesn't suck!! Thanks for the info 😊
Colorado is actually on the list of places for my wife and I to go. It’s a consideration for us to move to at some point. What parts of Colorado are your favorite?
@justinhickox I live in northern Colorado, so places like Estes Park are beautiful and close. Pinewood Springs is a small but beautiful place to live. Lake John is our favorite camp space. The Sand Dunes down south is amazing, and Zapata Falls is beautiful!!
My hair has grown out to a lovely silver colour. I have no idea what kind of cut to get though😮Hairdressers I see never do what I ask they seem to be in a rush 15mins per person.
That’s too bad. Hopefully you’ll be able to find a stylist that works for you better soon. I did a video a while ago that had some tips for how to find a great stylist. If you haven’t watched that video, you may find some good insight that could help.
Hi, Justin. I recently lost my long time stylist when she moved away. Since then I’ve had three haircuts, all of them bad. Do you have any advice on how to find a good stylist, maybe some questions to ask before booking an appt, and how to work with someone new. My old stylist, who had cut my hair for over 30 years was awesome and I always thought her super power was listening. Other people seem to listen and then they proceed to do something different than what I asked for.🤷🏼♀️ And of course, after all those years, my stylist understood my hair and knew exactly what it would and wouldn’t do. She became a dear friend and I miss her on so many levels! Any advice you can share would be so appreciated, because clearly my efforts aren’t working. Thanks!
I’ve been a hairstylist for a very long time when I started retail wasn’t so much a priority as it is today. Today most salon owners keep writing their stylists to sell more products problem with that at least for me was that if you carry a lot of products and you’re supposed to continually Sell products to your clients every time they may come in you start to lose credibility as their stylist. Watching this video I was just curious to perhaps learn some things that I didn’t know only to find out that the middle of the video is all about selling products, so I guess I haven’t learned anything new.
I even took one a PICTURE and you should have seen what I ended up with. I should NOT have paid her! But I did talk about her to everybody I knew! What a bafoon!!! Going to these hair salons is like rolling the dice!!
I feel the need to add another reason for putting skincare on the back of your hand is any excess that you rub in is having the same effect on hands, protecting and moisturising them too. Please remember an SPF on top xxx
Got a lot of great information from this video!! However, the one part I was really interested in, you give any specific information! That was on diet and getting the right nutrients. I have changed my diet, at age 71, and am conquering a lot of physical problems, and was hoping you would share more information on WHAT nutrients and food is best for our hair!! Where can I find this information?? Appreciate ALL your great videos!! ❤😊
Thank you so much! I’ve actually done a couple videos where I talk about the specific vitamins and minerals that are important for hair. It’s a lot to unpack in this video but you should definitely check the older videos out. I think you’d find a lot of value in them.
I’m growing mine out from a pixie (huge mistake) now. It’s a nightmare! I’m almost completely gray, and this helped me understand which direction to go. Thank you!
That's a shame. With a good partnership, your stylist can phase the shape to look presentable until you reach your goal. I've had some that didn't get it. That's when I find one that does. It's painful otherwise.
Hang in there. Have been growing mine out from a pixie (which a stylist thought I meant when I said short) and it is finally grown out to bottom of my ears and beginning to come together. Have battled with it for months.
In my twentys I used to colour my hair loads. Then I went back to my natural hair colour. Started going grey in my thirtys and going to stick with the grey hair I actually like the colour of it. It's also very short buzz cut number 3 and I love it. 😊 I am now 60.
To me I really like the suggestion to tell the stylist what feature of your face and hair that bothers you and the 2 of you can figure out the best style for you. I’ve been watching your videos a few weeks since I found you and I really love them. I have a suggestion to reduce the background music in your videos. Once you began talking about color the sound was about right. Thanks! -Susan
Thank you so much for that insight! I really appreciate it. Music is definitely the hardest part to get right for me when it comes to these videos. I’m really glad you’re liking the contact. I appreciate the support.
Hi, Justin. I stumbled across your videos this past weekend and love the sensible tips you offer. But do you have any tips for African-American hair? And if not, could you possibly do a guest video with someone who does? Thanks!
What about when you hair is baby fine and not very thick? How does one get a shape for this? My hair barely holds a curl sadly. I keep having HD’s over layer the hell out of my hair or do basic boring blunts. I can’t seem to get anywhere. My hair already doesn’t hold a curl and even when I say I want long layers or else I’m too thin it doesn’t matter MANY are doing whatever THEY want. My Mom literally gave me the best cuts ever and I can’t find anyone to do the same. So idk what to ask for anymore & I have horrible anxiety because I’m tired of growing out bad haircuts. 😢 Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated what I should be asking for or shape I should be looking into. 🙏 ❤
I have been cutting my own hair for years now and finally have a style that I love and suits me and believe me I have been to lots of hairdressers, I used to work in fashion. I have very dense hair growth, one hairdresser said over twice the 'normal' implantation. I do a shoulder length cut then layer it up with thinning scissors to take out the end volume. I don't have a fringe, I'm 66 not 16 and I have grown out my white and grey hair after being pushed to doing so by various collegues in fashion. My hair is much better quality since I've stopped dying it. I never blow dry my hair or style it, I twist it up tight when almost dry with a strong clip and keep doing so for a few days and it gives it a lovely curly style. I also only wash my hair every ten days as I don't have greasy hair or dandruff or itchy scalp. I did try to wash it often when shamed by stupid people and I had terrible problems with itch and dandruff and it looked terrible. Now I listen to me and my hair.

Thank you
Totally agree. Beauty is within - it's our character that's important - not our appearance.
You clearly didn’t watch his video as it wasn’t about looking young but looking your best, as he said.
@@atlramona And why is "looking your best" synonymous with looking younger? The point still stands.
@@raiu it isn’t, it’s looking your best be it young or old.
I love that you guys are OK with aging, but you want to keep good care and look your best at whatever age. It's very uplifting.
Thank you so much!
It’s not being OK with aging. Aging is a given. We all get old and there is no going back.
The 2 easiest ways to look your absolute best is easy, inexpensive, and effective. Good posture and a big smile!
Or a wig 😊
Thanks for including pics of women with grey hair! So often not looking older is associated with not having grey hair.
You’re so welcome. I think it’s all about the ideas more than any specific color of hair really.
THIS! I just got toned down to a tad bit darker than my photo, and I LOVE it! My complexion pops a bit more. My stylist nailed this!
Cinnamon blonde is great for me@@Vcaser
I think its wonderful that you have committed to learning about menopause so you can use that knowledge to help women in your salon!! It really does affect women in all manner of ways 😊❤
Thank you! I try to help where I can. If I can't help, I can usually find someone else who can and I get to learn in the process.
Agreed.
I love short hair on women.
Best not to watch a video that will trigger you then.
@@mermaidluv why are you such a shit talker ?
My gray hair is my favorite that ive ever had and looks best with my complexion.
That's awesome! I love hearing that.
@@deirdremorris9234go for it, if you don’t like it you can color it but I think you’re going to love it.
I don't really agree, I am very pale and have very dark brown hair, I've always been asked if I was sick. When I make my hair clearer ,I don't get that question.
Same here, with white hair I always get compliments.
True it all colour out in my fifty’s just felt like load lifted not having to dye it . Many of my friends followed even my forty year old daughter
You are the kind of hairstylist I have wanted for years. Someone that considers many of the things you referred to in this video. Shape of face, skin tone, what cut makes you look your best :). If I only lived closer . . .
Thank you for being brave and talking about the sensitive issues!!!
Hey!! Thanks for liking my work! That’s my pixie cut I did that you liked the length on top ♥️!
Just a friendly/cheap tip for dry lips… I had a really big problem with that. Turned out I was always dehydrated. I drink 9 Cups of water a day now & my lips aren’t dry & cracked anymore!
You're wife is a natural on screen & doing testimonials. Wow!
I don't mind the word old, facts are facts & it's all good😊
Love City Beauty products, so happy to see you sponsored by them.
They always talk too much and always end up looking like a man!. That is why I cut my own hair. And I'm loving my silver!
Same
Same here, too. IF I end up like a peeled onion, I can only be upset with myself. And it is free. I also quit ever letting anyone who is overweight, and/or unattractive, touch my hair. Maybe it is subconscious, but they always butcher my hair
Same. I've decided to try cutting my own hair too. I plan to use this video on the butterfly cut. th-cam.com/video/k0bvmttqcI8/w-d-xo.html
You should talk about how to find resolution for haircuts and style that don't need styling every day.
I love how detailed your videos are. Thanks for your help…getting my hair cut for my 48th birthday…ready for change.✨🌸✨
Oh how I wish I could get you to do my hair! What about if y’all could do a tour around the country?
@@justinhickox Thank you for all you do! I appreciate you!
I’ll be 52 in 3 weeks, and I’ve never had my hair this long. It was definitely a result of the pandemic; I’m immunocompromised, so I still need to be very careful when I go out. Heading to the salon in a few days, and can’t wait to get some of this length off, lol.
How did you go?
Very low maintenance = @ 3 mos 🤣
Luckily the toner washed out quite quickly, but that day I realized that I will never let myself go grey.... some people just don't suit it at all.
Do whatever makes you feel good ❤
Long hair here....I am loving it.❤
I love Justin’s comments during the lip segment part , he was right on , but knew things that most guys wouldn’t know
One key item that I've never seen addressed during the past several years -- especially amidst the "curtain bang/part down the middle" rage -- is the fact that parting your hair in the middle makes your nose look bigger.
Couldn't agree more. Middle parting is very unflattering.
Unless you’re CUTE. ANYone CUTE can wear hair Anyway they Want To, DUH 😂
@@lisahenry3150 "Beautiful" might be a better word. "Cute" is for teens. Beautiful is for women over age 21.
I have had a middle part my entire life. From my Marsha Brady hair when I was a kid in the 70’s and now at 55. I love it. 🤩
Just started watching my guy!…love how you just explained youthful!💜
There’s no cut with thin hair
No hair to work with
I have lost 2/3 of my scalp hair
I’m just grateful to have any now
I've had thin hair all my life, and besides that, my hair is also fine. I'd love to hear Justin's thoughts on that, too.
I love your videos, Justin. Much better without the background music. Thanks
I’d love it if you did an episode on great cuts for older women with really curly hair.

@Jamesrolls726 my preference for me is long hair. I love versatility
Will you please talk more about how to care for us who are letting our gray grow out?
Yes!!!! Yes!!! Now that's the beauty advise I'm looking for.
@@kathleenphillips7145You're so lucky your hair sounds very pretty.
Ooh thank you for the curtain bang advice!
I just ordered the City Beauty Moisturizer… I have heard so much about it and I’m looking forward to giving it a try. Thank you for providing such a generous discount code! Do you have any suggestions for people who struggle w/ gray hair popping up so quickly? The gray starts creeping up
shortly after I color my hair.
Great question!!! Honestly, I’ll have to look deeper into this before I can give you reliable and solid advice. Let me do some digging.
Another great vid! Would like to know your wife’s hair care routine & products please. Her hair always look fab! Thanks!
Thank you! Great idea! I’ll add that to my video topic list! Thanks for the input!
Many thanks Justin! 😊
Thanks for tips
This video is so helpful, Justin…in my opinion, Number 5 is the most important..Nutrition…especially during menopause and post menopausal, in your East Coast Mamas case!🤣…i have not had my hair shaped, in awhileeeeee…this gave me the push I need!…one thing, I wouldn’t use Dionna as a bad example for anything!..🤣🤣🤣…another great video!…thank you for the information, it doesn’t suck!!!!…say hi to Dionna from me!💜💜💜💜💜💜
👏👏👏👏 excelent
this is the second vídeo that i whatched from the canal and became a big fan already! thank you!
Yes, let’s swap out the phrase “looking younger” with “looking our BEST”.
I agree with what you said about women's hair--a little constructive criticism: You might want to trim your facial hair so that it doesn't look like it is going into your nose and into your mouth. It would be a cleaner look and more hygienic.
@Jamesrolls726 Long
Really appreciating this detailed perspective! So much to consider now - thank you!
Nothing wrong with ageing it's universal law of life keeping fit is the key to being young where possible.😊
Great video. Now with curtain bangs what would you have recommended the model do to accentuate her cheekbone and eyes?
Honest and intelligent advice. So few hairstylists who are this astute though.

i think it would be helpful to tell this guy how much money you have to spend on your hair. how much time do you want to spend styling your hair everyday? then he can/should give you a realistic answer.
Also, a lot of older women with dark hair go much lighter and that often looks washed out and aging.
The bad example you used for curtain bangs, actually makes me want yo cut curtain bangs. quite the opposite effect, I would say😂
Thank you!👍
Love your videos Justin I get so much out of them so thank you 🙏 & especially loved this one with your beautiful wife ❤
Another great video. Chock full of good information. Thanks again. Love your videos.
So many good tips. Great video!!
Pls come to North Carolina! Do a national tour! I am even thinking about going to Portland to visit your salon!
Colorado in the house!
As always, I learn so much from your videos and I always look forward to them. Thank you!! 😊😊
Thank you so much!! That’s awesome to hear! I appreciate the support!
Thanks!
Wished you lived near Augusta Georgia. My hair is sooo thin and a lot less of it now at age 66.
At 54 I've finally grown out my hair and I have zero idea what style to do.
Stylists where I live won't design a style anymore, the will only give you the cut you show them in a photo, even expensive places!!
I too, don't want to look younger. I just want to look good.
I've even changed salons because I didn't want to listen to their sales pitch about their over priced products.
No matter how you tell your stylist you want the hair cut, they always end up cutting how they want, many, many times had that happen 6:38 6:39 6:40 2 6:16
The nutrition. I have tried to eat a healthy diet and I do get compliments on my hair looking healthy. I’m going to look into City Beauty.
YESSS! It’s crazy how much of a difference that makes right!!! Definitely check them out, they’re really solid products!
@@justinhickox thanks! I will do that! Appreciate you!! 😀
Loved the video! So, what kind of cuts do you recommend to square faces shape and wide forehead? Thank you! Are you coming to South America soon? 😅
I’m growing mine out from a pixie (huge mistake) now. It’s a nightmare! I’m almost completely gray, and this helped me understand which direction to go. Thank you!
It was a nightmare because you didn’t like the cut or you don’t like the grow out phase?
That's a shame. With a good partnership, your stylist can phase the shape to look presentable until you reach your goal.
I've had some that didn't get it. That's when I find one that does. It's painful otherwise.
Hang in there. Have been growing mine out from a pixie (which a stylist thought I meant when I said short) and it is finally grown out to bottom of my ears and beginning to come together. Have battled with it for months.
Pixies are so much work - I had to wash style mine every single morning 😢
@@justinhickox oh definitely don’t like the grow out phase! It’s so bad!
A lot of short haircuts just scream “old lady haircut.”
I absolutely love your videos….soooo much information and your wife is beautiful!…thank you Justin!😊🙏🏻😊
She is gorgeous
In my twentys I used to colour my hair loads.
Then I went back to my natural hair colour.
Started going grey in my thirtys and going to stick with the grey hair I actually like the colour of it.
It's also very short buzz cut number 3 and I love it. 😊
I am now 60.
Thanks!
Hi, can you make a video of perm short hair and what is the products to use with perm hair.
Yes my hair is super fine too. I am perimenopausal
