      I'm a disabled single mom of two teen boys. I have pretty bad allergies so I couldn't get a cat or dog. We chose a budgie and I'm so glad we did. She is our little diva and is my companion when the boys visit their dad's house.

      Bob, please keep in mind that Conures will live up to 30 plus years. Make arrangements for someone to take over in case heaven forbid something happened to you. 🐦🐦🐦

    People of the Internet, do NOT buy a sun conure if you are not going to care for it properly. Do not stuff your bird into a tiny cage and feed it seed its whole life!! Do not buy one just because it is pretty and you want it to talk! Do not feed it HUMAN food and then wonder why it died early. I HIGHLY advise you ask a professional how to care for you basic beginner bird before purchasing a conure of any kind and do all necessary research before-hand. THANK YOU!

      Marisa Oliveira Thank you for your comment, when I was talking about human food, I meant things made just for humans like pizza or cake, or things that are really just not meant for birds or other animals. Some people can be really stressful...like the other day I saw a comment about someone who lets their bird drink coffee. That sort of owner is horrible. :(

      +Mercifa Misuki Owning only one isn't very nice either. They're flock birds after all.

      Exactly, they are very social birds and I personally believe keeping a single bird all by itself (Birds across the room do not count as company) is cruel. They should be able to preen each other, keep each other warm and play together, just like human children. :)

      +Parrots4Life I own two sun conures, one male (known) and one female (suspected, not known for sure. shows traits of a female). the male is about a year and a half and was the first one I got, hes very territorial and only really likes me. hes not as playful as other birds and prefers to just play with his toys and preen himself, the female is about 10 or 11 weeks now, and is very cuddly and playful and will prefer to stay on me and play with my hands and stuff... I think the male has "bonded" with me and thinks I am its mate due to it always being on my shoulder, me patting its back, scratching his head etc etc and absolutely hates it when I have either the female, or both him and the female on me. theyre in separate cages, but the cages are close together (about 30cm-50cm apart) so they can get to know each other, its been a couple weeks and my older bird is showing no I improvement in his attitude towards the younger one, the female baby will walk to him and tweet softly at him and be nice, then my older one will get really skittery and will sometimes have small quarrels, I break these up quickly and nothing more than a couple squaks has happened, but I just wish they would get along. the older one is not actively aggressive, just defensive when the baby gets near and thats why I think he has bonded to me. do you have any suggestions on how to fix that? I hope to have them in the same cage as the baby bird has a much smaller cage and the older one has one that is very large, and it would be very very ideal if they were both in one cage. what should I do?

    • @parrots4life74
      @parrots4life74 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dylan I had this exact same problem a few years back with my Blue throated conures, what I should start off saying is that you will have to put in a lot of time and effort to make these two get along as most the time if two birds don't immediately take to one another, it means they will likely not get along for the rest of their lives unless serious effort is put in place over a long period of time. Its great that one of the birds is so young, she will be easy to work with, the older bird seems to be the main issue here, he has obviously been acting defensive as you are his human and the baby is a stranger in his home. If no other birds reside at your home and he is not use to other birds occupying your time and homes space then this may take even more time for him to adjust. Its good to hear they are close to each other and can see one another, this will help the older bird get use to the baby being around. After a few weeks of them getting use to the flow of your house, get them out of the cage onto a play gym or bird friendly play-space and keep a very close eye on them to make sure no one gets hurt. I personally like to keep a squirty bottle around. If the male goes to pick a fight, squirt him. For every time he goes over and picks a fight, add more times you squirt him. But only do so if the fight starts, not just if he's walking over or putting on a threatening display. Sun conures are very smart and he will pick up what he is and isn't allowed to do to the baby. I used this method on my female Blue throat who hated my poor male and wanted him dead. It took me just over 8 months to get her settled down and now she lives with him and loves him to bits. I honesty don't know how long it could take for you, I had to be so careful about getting them out of the cage and keeping an eye on them, my female would wait for me to be distracted and zoom over to him to bite his feet, she knew I didn't want her to hurt him. Conures are smart and cheeky, but it just takes time and plenty of rewards, not just punishments. If you get both your birds out together and the older male does not immediately run off to pick a fight with baby, give him a treat. If he is sitting close to her and isn't making a threatening display, more treats. He will learn if you are patient. Hope this helps, good luck! :)

    I wouldn't say they are good starter birds simply because of the noise. For a small bird conures, especially in the Aritinga group like Suns are extremely loud, one of the louder birds you can get and they require a good amount of attention. I see many sun conures in rescues because people didn't realize what they were in for

    Sun Conure's are actually not a very good starting bird for those not experienced with pets. They are very beautiful but are VERY loud and needy, I have one do I know this for fact.

    The smaller conures like the green cheek conures are probably better for you. They are a little bit smaller then the Suns, but are just as playful, they also come in a variety of colors. They aren't as loud either.

    Its still always a good idea to do resarch long before you get a bird because they do not have short lifespans like Dogs or cats if you get them young. The common zebra finch and Canarys can live fifteen years! Budgies and Cocatiels can live around 30. Lovebirds are about 25. Parrotlets are about 40. So please please as rewarding as these animals are as pets. Always do your resarch before you bring one home. They are living and loving little creatures and deserve the same respect. @_@
