  • Frodo Baggins the Ring-bearer was instrumental to the downfall of Sauron, the Lord of the Rings. He was the protagonist of Tolkien’s most renowned work in Middle-earth, and today, we explore his history! Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on Frodo in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

      Very true. Tolkien believed Samwise was the true hero of Middle Earth. It's a beautiful story, none-the-less. I guess it's one of the only stories to overcome the Great War.

    The true hero....a hobbit of The Shire. He saved the world, doubting himself many times on the way, but his best friend kept him going and he did. Frodo is truly one of the greatest characters in fiction...EVER!

      He did doubt himself, but his main struggle was against the Ring and its constant attempts to dominate his mind. It's not mentioned over and over again, but its one of the most important (and heroic) struggles in the book.

    • @Taiko206
      @Taiko206 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Like he said himself, the true hero is Sam. If it had been Frodo on his own he would'nt have gotten past Shelob, and even if he managed that he would've claimed the Ring for himself. And of course gollum had his part to play in the end, just as Gandalf foretold it.
      Besides, if Frodo was the true hero of the book it would've ended with the line quoted at the beginning of this video, instead it ended with Sam coming home and saying "Well...i'm back."

    Frodo Baggins is the full embodiment of courage, wisdom and mercy, the later being the most important of the three. The hardships that he faced throughout his life serve as a lesson and inspiration for me on the importance of being persistent with your mission and purpose without ever abandon your principles no matter how tempting it is.

    "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."
    Also, Frodo shows that not every good guy in a story is Mr./Mrs. Perfect. It's perfectly fine for a hero to have flaws because that's the truth. It makes him/her more realistic. It helps show not everyone is perfect.

    The end of his journey is the most touching part of it all, to me. When you said he was, perhaps, the one being from Middle Earth most deserving of his spot on the Undying Lands, it made me want to cry, because to me, that part has the deepest meaning of his story, and its unrivaled in beauty. Really good video, much thanks for reviving a little of Frodo's heroism and greatness in me.

      I agree. It always annoys me when people say Sam is the "real hero of LOTR". Sam is of course a hero, but Frodo gave up everything he had to defeat this great evil. The rest of the Fellowship? After the fighting was done Sam married his sweetheart, had 7 kids, became the Mayor of Hobbiton, and lived a charmed life. Pippen and Merry also married and took over their fathers offices. Gandalf got to shed his mortal form and go home. Aragorn married his love and became King. Legolas and Gimli became Lords of their own colonies and then got to take a sweet bro road trip at the end. Frodo couldn't even enjoy the Shire that he saved. All he got was more pain, and suffering, and ultimately had to leave his whole world behind, for a chance to heal. It's heartbreaking.

    Some think Frodo failed in the end but I have come to think that, at least from a certain point of view, Frodo did not fail. Yes, Frodo did claim the Ring for his own once at Mount Doom but earlier he had made Gollum swear an oath by the Ring to aid them. We all know oaths are very serious matters in Arda and that breaking those oaths has serious consequences. So when Gollum attacked Frodo at Mount Doom, Gollum sealed his own fate and that of the Ring. Perhaps Frodo was far-sighted enough to know that oath would be necessary to the completion of his mission and not just in the obvious ways.

    • @KS-xk2so
      @KS-xk2so 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've read a few different things, I think some even from Tolkien himself, that basically make the point that in that moment, at the Crack of Mount Doom, the very heart of the Rings power, no being would be able to resist it's lure and willingly cast it into the fire. The ring quite literally can not be destroyed willingly. Thats why Gollum is there, to accidentally destroy it, either via a struggle or joyous dancing.
      Look at Isildur after he cuts the Ring from Sauron's hand. He's barely had it a day, and Sauron has just been weakened, yet when he is at the Crack of Mount Doom, he doesn't destroy it either. Frodo has held it for so long... he had no chance.

    • @istari0
      @istari0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KS-xk2so I agree. I think it took the oath Frodo made Gollum swear and Gollum's subsequent breaking of that oath to bring about the ring's direction.

    While Frodo was unable to destroy the Ring, he got it to Mount Doom and that was all that was truly required of him; fate or Iluvatar through Gollum did the rest. He also showed mercy toward Gollum without which the journey would have failed. Frodo gets overlooked a lot as the hero of LOTR, and most of his best moments are stolen from him in the movies, but he is still one of my favorites, and proves that it's not only success that should be appreciated, but the effort. Also I almost share my birthday with him and Bilbo (just one day off) so just one more reason to love him.

      Is he controversial? Almost all LotR readers I've met appreciated his heroism and mostly quiet, mental struggle against the Ring, even if it happened in the background while the focus is on Sam and their way through Ithilien and Mordor. Frodo's reciprocating the love and loyalty of Sam despite the Ring's influence, and his attempts to save Gollum (which almost succeeded) are beautiful.

    Happy Hobbit Day may we all be merry in the green wood while the world is young! I am intrigued by your statement about Frodo having a power over fate and doom that other hobbits did not. Did this power come from the Ring? Great work as always, may you live long in years of blessedness!

    Our great master of ceremonies contributes!
    Thank you for the encompassing of the memorable hero. It's easy to pick and choose with our memories and forget the whole picture of a character, their influences, flaws, and strengths. I have wondered before if Tolkien had written this series in the modern day, or closer to it, when there has been an embrace and less stigma around what we now know as PTSD if he would have told more of Frodo's story after his quest was 'won' and just how many who have suffered the scars of conflict have found themselves in the character/would have further been comforted by his search for peace. Or if it is even more detrimental as his sailing away may have been interpreted as a different escape/redemption of a more solemn sort.
    I am always astounded by the amount of artistic talent in this fandom and how so many pieces are highlighted among creators.
    Thank you so much for both contributing but also for hosting and corralling all of this talent!

    Frodo and Sam would later turn up in a far western island called Hawai'i where they introduced the natives to surfing, which they invented, which began a new sub-culture that would spread to Cali-forni'a, Australi'a, and all over the world.

    A very nice overview. I've looked through the artists you have provided, are there any who you know of who do not base their art of the LOTRs on P. Jackson's vision? Such as the opening print of Frodo, and the print of Frodo and Gandalf at the fireplace in Bag End. Thank you.

    Frodo Baggins is my name and my (spoiler) “drownded” father is the namesake of the husband of the mother of all dragons from another world. Does that make my older cousin* Bilbo’s chief enemy, Smaug, my step-sibling?
