That passage of Ulmo appearing to Tuor blew me away... Tolkien's ability to put weight behind his words is UNMATCHED. There's few things that can give me chills like an epic Tolkien passage.
Innit, I've read the silmarillion twice and am reading it a third. I'd suggest reading it again, it is a different read every time
@Men of Numenor, even in the Lord of the Rings, there is an eloquence and rich flow of language that I find enthralling.
Ulmo is my most favorite Vala. He never abandoned children of Ilúvatar and his aid was essential for Melkor's downfall.

The appearance of Ulmo before Tuor is one of the best and most epic text passages ever written by Tolkien (in my opinion). You get a sense of how powerful and utterly terrifying the Valar really are. You really don't want them to be your enemies.
As can be seen in the doom of Mandos, of which we also get a terrifying glimpse in that passage, when Ulmo tells Tuor that the upcoming storm was unleashed by Osse on Mandos' command to destroy one of the elven ships that had tried to reach Aman in search for help against Morgoth. We also can see some of the internal dynamics of the Valar here, since Ulmo apparently can't calm the storm, so he urges Tuor to climb up the cliffs again for his own safety. (I'm sure Ulmo could overpower Osse or command him to stop at any time, but it's obvious that he is acting without the knowledge of the other Valar here, so he has to remain undetected). He then later rescues Voronwe from the doomed ship; Voronwe recounts a large majestic wave, calm among the storm, that picks him up and carries him away.
Beleriand sank beneath the waves once Valar actually decided to use physical force against one of their own kin who at that point was mere malignant shadow of what he had been. It also wasn't deliberate police either. Destructive power they could unleash defies imagination.
@@vksasdgaming9472 Yes, each time when the Valar and Melkor directly clash, Arda gets seriously damaged. First in the formation of the world itself, then when Melkor destroys the two lights, again when the Valar wage war on him for the sake of the elves and finally during and after the war of wrath. Which is probably the reason why they don't want to interfere directly again in the fights against Sauron, although he is not as powerful as his old master. Then again, not even the light of the Silmaril worked inside Mount Doom, at the center of his power.
@@untruelie2640 Barad-dûr was Sauron's seat of power. Orodruin was just his workshop. Most likely Sauron could have destroyed Silmaril if he had gotten himself one of them. Two of them were theoretically at his reach.
@@vksasdgaming9472 Tolkien literally wrote in "The Lord of the Rings" that the Sammath Naur were the center of Sauron's power, exactly vbecause he had forged the ring there. In this context, a workshop is a very important place. And I don't think Sauron chose this volcano by accident.
I don't think it's terrifying at all, but more "enchanting" and incredibly atmospheric and strongly dependent on all the context and build-up of it. Indeed I find the travel and build-up to it (e.g. him among the ruins) way more memorable.
But indeed it is overall one of the passages I would recommend to anyone wanting an example of Tolkien's writing.
Ulmo is by far the coolest valar, he kind of reminds me of Gandalf the way he is always trying to thwart the enemy's plans. Shame he disappears in the TA.
To tell the truth, Ulmo IS Gandalf. (Grey as the sea and Círdan gave him his ring.) That's why he 'disappears' in the TA.

The waters of Middle Earth were his province. A lot of visions and dreams were mentioned in TLOTR. All happened near water. Ataboy, Ulmo.
Ulmo always struck a deep chord with me. In my young understanding 20 years ago. He NEVER fled and gave up on middle earth. He understood and valued the Eldar and Edain.
One of the most bad-ass Valar indeed. As a swimmer and a fan of Tolkien since I was 8, he is naturally my favorite Vala but there are other solid reasons as well.
Ulmo really cared, nourished and understood both the Children of Iluvatar and Melkor the most, even more than Manwe who can't comprehend evil and let Melkor loose multiple times, hence causing second-hand destruction.
Ulmo is an echo of Creation. You might say the water is, but Ulmo is creator of water on Arda. Manwë and him, the essence of life.
I always wondered why didn’t Ulmo find/monitor the ring while it was in the River Anduin? Could’ve been a crazy ‘what if’ scenario because he could’ve done anything with it/given it to anyone. Sea gods are the best

They should have lost it in a still lake, not a river. For a lake is much like dead body, unmowing, unclean, and unfit of much life. Therefor he cannot listen to waters that do not "live"
I got my Ulmo fix recently by rereading the chapter on Tuor in the Silmarillion and relistening to the episode on the Prancing Pony Podcast, but I'm here for more. You have to love the majesty, power and danger that Ulmo represents. Surprisingly, he's the most active Ainu trying to help the peoples of Middle Earth.
Ulmo is my favorite Vala and the only one that I really respect. All the other Valar, including Manwe, are shortsighted and unwise in their government of Arda, hiding away in Valinor and neglecting Middle Earth. Ulmo demonstrates far greater wisdom and foresight than the rest of the Valar in my opinion. My favorite aspect of Ulmo is his role in opposing the decrees of fate and pronouncements of doom by the other Valar. One of my favorite lines in all of Tolkien’s writing is when he tells Tuor “But behold, in the armor of fate there is ever a rift, and in the walls of doom a breach, until the Full Making, which ye call the End. So it shall be while I endure. A secret voice that gainsayeth, and a light where darkness is decreed.” Poetry!
Agreed if not for the Noldor all of the second children of Illuvitar would either have been slain (the Edain) or become subservient to Morgoth (the Easterlings)

One thing I like about Ulmo was how perfectly he was written. His interventions aided the Children invaluably but he wasn’t overly intervening, they still grew and struggled in life and in the face of a great evil who wielded an unworldly, dark power. There wasn’t *too much* divine help. Ulmo’s interventions were not only in the hopes of curbing the worst of consequences from the actions brought upon by Morgoth, they were also intended to bring hope, hope that the people of Middle Earth would be free from the fear and tyranny of the Dark Lord’s looming shadow so they may live their lives without worry. This would imply Ulmo also understood the strengths of Men and Elves and believed in their wisdom, so he sought to awaken their strengths and put faith in the wisdom Eru’s children had within them. At the very least, Ulmo did whatever he could. Certainly from being secluded to the waters of the world, he had his limits and used them however able.
It's utterly amazing how Tolkien's story all correlate and interweave perfectly with a nice bow.
The fact that Ulmo was the only one to help the Children against Morgoth immediately makes him my favourite of the Lords of the Valar.

Tolkien definitely believes water has a power for good--the Lake was mightier than Smaug and help comes from the Sea and all good people are drawn to it.

I absolutely love Ulmo!!! He is the most valiant and caring of the Valar. Without him many battles would have been lost and more of middle earth’s inhabitants would have died. He always stood up to what he believed but gracious to authority. I love Ulmo so much.
I love sea gods. Whether it's Poseidon of Greek mythology, Neptune of Roman mythology or Njördr of Norse mythology.

It's incredible to know Ulmo was so dedicated, giving advice to many of the Children of Ilúvatar, and never forsaking the world of Arda.
One thing I wonder that has to do with waters: Could Ulmo have had a presence in the Kheled-Zâram, the Mirrormere?
And in other nearby waters, did he know of the Nameless Things of Moria, 'who swam in ages ago', and the Watcher in the Water?
He should, unless he on purpose dismissed the fact that he left water incredibly deep down in earth. I believe he didnt pay the creatures mind since in all their might, they could never climb to the surface (until the watcher).
A fallow-up story of that would be incredible
I wish there was some Tolkien art of Ulmonan. Imagine how epic an underwater palace could be with Ulmo's chariot being pulled by Narwhals and Sea Lions.
It is often difficult to appreciate the impact of certain characters within Middle earth, as their contribution is spread over many chapters and through many years. When you produce these videos, you bring it all together and the magnitude of their deeds is brought to bear. I love the stories around Ulmo, as if Tolkien understood the importance of the waters of the world and gave this Valar so much attention with that in mind. I haven't missed any of your work, other than the Amazon stuff, lol but this is one of the best. Bravo sir, you set the bar very high.

I have two favourite Valar. Ulmo and Irmo, the brother of Mandos. The way Tolkien evokes Ulmo's majesty through the power of the sea makes fascinating reading. You have caught the essence of that in your post so thank you :)

What's remarkable (and I just realized now) is the fact that a Valar put faith into a mortal Men (and not Elves) in order to save the fate of Middle Earth
It the freedom of choice. Men truly have that. Perhaps Ingwe (High King of Vanyar) is mightiest of Children, but he has no free will in long run. Men go through the world and can change it.
A lot of pivotal moments in LOTR involve water, usually as a force that helps the goodies. Ulmo lending a nudging hand?

Lord of the Rings videos are my go-to when i want to watch something calming. Somehow visualizing the fanasty realm and it's characters/stories/landscapes and settings calms me. And these TH-camrs that make these LOTR videos do a great job
Ulmo was the Vala who when they were deciding what to do could be counted on to say things like "I don't think this is a good idea" or "Maybe we should do something else instead."

So, since Ulmo is most connected to music, is that why ocean waves and sound waves carry pretty much the exact same scientific properties? (ie wavelength, amplitude, frequency and how changes in them effect wave patterns and shape) kind of another interesting way to play with Tolkien's idea that his world is simply ours but with a made up past

so cool. first time I have learned or realized how Tolkien had such ideas from his youth or young adulthood, with the Ulmo poem from 1914. Obviously building his fantasy world took many years but being passive fan more in it only for the entertainment factors, I guess I had just assummed he went to work on it like, in the 1940s or something, for the first time ever. But he had all those fantastic story ideas rumbling about in his brain long long before that!😅

When I first read the Silmarillion for the fist time I could help but think that Middle Earth may have been a better place had the Valar listened to Ulmo more
"Ekhaya" literally means Home in Isizulu.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Zulu language inspired this as Tolkien is a South African..

The more I learn of Ulmo, before I knew more than his name, I kinda thought of him at them bottom end of my interest scale - "He's just lord of waters, big deal" to understanding that YES he IS a big deal :) He seemed to have his finger in every big event (even in the most sublime thing sometimes).. He's now in my top 2.. or maybe even top 1.

I am rereading the Silmarillion right now and I am intrigued by the character of Melian. I would love an introspective on her. I mean, she is the only Maia that marries an elf and the only one to have a child with one, as far as I know. And she also rules a realm as a queen, nothing we see any other maia doing (except Sauron)

Fading in the Corrupted Arda is the fate of the elves, and it is part of the third theme that Eru gave to the Ainur. It may be thought that the Valar invited the elves to Valinor so that they would not wither. In that case, is the fact that Ulmo, whose waters echo the Music of the Ainur, is against the invitation of the elves to Valinor, is it an indication that he has not grasped the theme from this point of view?

Do you think Ulmo knew or held some power over some of the nameless things considering they dwell in water. And do you think he could have withheld Sauron’s servants from finding the one ring since it was also in water?
It’s possible but the nameless things seem to be completely removed from the side of the Ainour
Ulmo has the only undestroyed Silmaril. He keeps that to himself though.
Well, not really. One is in the sky, where presumably only the Valar could reach it, so it's been taken off the playing field, but not destroyed. The other was thrown into a volcanic chasm, but is even lava enough to destroy a Silmaril? I'm not so sure. If anything, there's a good chance Aule has that one now.
