Up-pipe secrets! MY04-06 Subaru Forester XT and MY01-05 WRX (Bugeye)

If you have an MY04-06 Forester or MY01-03 Bugeye WRX, here's a simple and cost effective way to gain about 20KW on top of what you would normally gain from a tune.

These models contain a Catalytic Converter in the turbo up-pipe for emissions, which adds a large restriction, reducing power and turbo spool. So much so that on later models, Subaru moved away from a catted up-pipe and used an air pump instead.

Have you seen any difference in using a smaller diameter pipe versus a larger size? Aftermarket ones range from 1.75 inches to 2 inches (4.4cm versus 5cm)

Just a tip for foresters: don't try pulling up pipe out from below... pull the up pipe out out from top (behind turbo) rotate pipe and out through the space where down pipe would be.
Patric McClancy I would pull it from the bottom. All you have to do is jack the motor up a few inches and your can sneak it out. Iv done so many I wouldn't do it any other way

So you want to say, that if i have 2006 forester 2.5XT it all ready has catless uppipe? and there are no meshes inside of it??

Do you have an instructional video on how to change the up pipe? I’m from the US and I don’t really trust any shops to work on my cars. This Forester XT is my first Subaru so this is a whole new ballpark compared to my SRT4
I just replaced this part on my 2004/05 Forester XT and very happy i did + at the same time i found the TD04 turbo had a lot of play in the shaft so i replaced it at the same time

@@derekwaslak2402 If you replace the stock turbo with a stock turbo, you shouldn't need a tune, but it's suggested to get off stock tune for longevity

Based on the forester models that had air pumps not having upipe cats, is it correct that all turbo model subaru with air pumps don't have catted up pipes.
I saw this video too late! The catalytic converter already plugged my turbo and I had the change the up pipe, luckily it didn’t destroy the turbo. I just had to remove every single piece from inside the turbo
Good to hear. I just replaced my turbo on a new to me 05XT and could see that cat down there in the uppipe - looked really good actually. I think i will checking the thing once a year until i bite the bullet and change out the uppipe.

I’m assuming my 07 Outback XT does NOT have catted up pipe since it DOES have the secondary air pump. Can anyone confirm?
@MRT Performance Does a aftermarket CATless up pipe need a ECU tune after or is it safe to keep running the standard ECU mapping?
Does it throw CEL codes because the CAT has been removed as there is a sensor in that up-pipe?

Is it mandatory to tune your car after changing out your cat for a straight non cat up pipe?
Does the same apply for an 05 Baja turbo? And can you get a careless up pipe for that? Also if so is there any tuning required for just the careless up pipe? I’m working on a budget as I just replaced my turbo.
Yes, the baja all have the catted up-pipe and you can use any up-pipe for the wrx, sti and forester. I bought an HKS uppipe for my 05 baja turbo.

So my Hawkeye 2007 STI 2.5.....I had the secondary air pump deleted at forged build. I have the standard up-pipe still fitted....is it catless then?

Nobody mentions the Forester STI! American and Aussies act like it does not exist at all. I have a pukka JDM '04 Forester STI here in the UK, and would love this model referenced, in the other wise great videos . So what up-pipe do I have MRT?

Fox they look completely different. Grimmspeeds uppipe flex joint is alittle different.

From what I recall/read the STis don't have catted uppipes.
