What Did I Find in Munnar, Kerala? 🇮🇳

- My first experience of Kerala was the lush green mountain town of Munnar. Most people's first experience of travellng to Kerala would be a stay in the city of Kochi, which has the big airport but I travelled into the Kerala by road from Tamil Nadu.
I went into Munnar town looking to rent a scooter so that I could fully explore and get off the beaten tourist trail. Munnar is very much a tourist town but with 99% of those tourists coming from other parts of India it doesn't feel as much of a tourist trap to a westerner. It's not Kuta, Bali, or Phuket, Thailand where you see more white guys wearing elephant pants and singlets than you do local people.
Unfortunately my bike rental mission was a huge fail. Bike rentals have been fully banned in Munnar due to frequent accidents. I'd like to make my own choices and evaluate risk / reward for myself (I'm pretty good at that) but it seems like the local commy government take that choice away from you in Munnar.
Just as well that I have two strong legs, so at least exploring the town area wouldn't be any problem.
It seems like half the businesses in Munnar are chocolate shops. It's a very popular thing there as there are large cocoa plantations near by. I'm a big fan of chocolate so I like the fact that I can get some good, homemade varieties from just about anywhere in town.
Another sweet treat that could be found anywhere, because 'tis the season, were plum cakes. Plum cakes are a famous food eat an Christmas and I saw them being sold all over town. As I walked off the beaten path, down some alleyway, I followed my nose to a local bakery and picked up a freshly baked cake for the incredible price of 30 rupees. A bargain!
In my Tamil Nadu videos people kept commenting that I was in South India and always eating North Indian food. Well, here in Kerala I tried some Chicken Pulao. Pulao is rice that's cooked in broth with spices added. I don't know if that's South Indian food or not but I did follow the locals recommendations for the restaurant, Soma, so don't blame me if it's not authentic Kerala cuisine.
I found a place on Google Maps that said "Munnar Viewpoint" so, again with the help of the friendly locals, I found my way up there to get the absolute best view of Munnar, well away from all the other tourists. I was the only person up there and even though it was quite a short trail I did feel the kind of satisfaction that one feels when reaching the summit of a mountain after a long trek, with the reward of the amazing view.
Since I'd burned off the energy from the Pulao rice meal, a bit of bargaining with tuk-tuk drivers later, I was back at my hotel destroying their buffet. Apparently the first evening meal was included for free in my room package. I hadn't even realised that until I checked in. We all know that food tastes even better when it's free, so I definitely wasn't going to miss out on the buffet as a perfect way to end my first day in Kerala.

@Robert L He is in south India. You can find fair skin in north India.
@Robert L we have both type of skin colour in India . fair and dark . it's in the genes .
@Robert L India traditionally had Dravidian Race which was darker in skin tone and then Aryans came and settled along Gangetic plain and they were light skinned. You will find people of the yellow race in the North Eastern Region of India but they are Indians as well.
In my opinion, even the dark skinned have features which make them very beautiful but the general tone of Indian people is Wheatish. Neither light nor dark. South India has extremes of temperatures throughout the year and that also is a reason to the darker tones.
Dale, you really do take us off the beaten path and it makes us feel like we are right there with you seeing the beautiful scenery and meeting the locals and tasting the local cuisine. THATS what makes you such a great vlogger!

My last visit to Munnar was about 15 years ago. There used to be 12 seater minibuses run by the tourist board that drove you all around. One of their trips was to a wildlife sanctuary.
If anyone is planning a visit, seek them out.

I love your travel adventure, especially your courage to eat street food and drinks. I have been to many of the places you vlog, and I am seeing it through different eyes. I got really sick from food poisoning for a few days on my last visit and don't think I will visit again after the pandemic.

In your shoes man!! I got the same feeling when travel alone asking the way to get to the place I want, even the way people offer to help if only we pay quite a lot of money then have to spend the time roaming around randomly, but you showed your resilience joyfully. I like that!
Coorg is a good hill station in India, you gotta visit it someday! Has some of the spectacular waterfalls, coffee plantations, old towns, PS best time to visit is in winters (January!)

The easiest way for you to compute the auto rickshaw fare is to map your destination and find out the distance. The fair market price is about 22-25 Rs per km ( you have government prices that were set 5 or 6 years ago without adjustment for inflation every year) in a big city and probably 25-30 Rs in remote places like Munnar.
Don’t rely on the government rates that were set in 2013-14 which are outdated and you can’t make a living at those prices in 2020. 25-30 Rs per km is a fair market price in a place like Munnar and you want to start at the low end so you have room to go to the high end.
Yeah most of the land is owned by corporate tea estates like Tata Tea where your Tetley Tea and PGTips in UK come from the estates in Munnar.

I am striking Munnar town centre off my bucket list as Dale has covered it beautifully in his video. Motor bike rental is not a common thing in Kerala unless you find a place in Kochi where they rent them out. You certainly seem to have missed so many tourist spots within 15 to 20 miles radius around Munnar Town Centre. Hiring a jeep from the town centre to take you around is the best way to see these places. Views from these places are immaculate.
Thanks Dale. I am uncomfortable with bargaining prices down. I like watching other people do it. In some places, it is expected and you could be looked at as a fool if you don't try. I like that you barter and than tell them to keep the change. Entertaining videos. Love watching you explore.

I shall never forget the Kerela tour I was on once with over 200 school kids from Mumbai ! We had to take care of them while we were travelling through out the state via a nice comfy bus that picked us up from Ernakulam station. We travelled from Ernakulam to Alleppy then to Thekkaddy and then to Munnar! I shall NEVER EVER FORGET THE DRIVE FROM THEKKADY TO MUNNAR FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE !!!! Just Beautiful. Truly God's Own Country👌👌👌
Yo, maybe I was on that bus. Do you remember the name of the school? We got off at Ernakulam, then travelled to Munnar and kept the luggage in a resort there. From there we travelled to Thekkady, Athirapilly, Allepey and Kochi. This was in late October 2015.

Hi Dale, if your looking for many good hiking spots I recommend Philippines has many beautiful hiking spots, falls beach, a lot of tourist spot. Surigao, sagada and mountain province, ifugao, benguet, and many more. But right now its impossible because of the covid-19.
