- I went shopping at the Bapu Bazar, a huge market street in Jaipur.
As the evenings were cold when I visited Jaipur I needed a jacket. Since I was probably only going to use it for a couple of days before heading to South India, I wanted to find a cheap one. I figured that this type of market would be the place for that, especially if I bargained.
I ended up being led into a basement of a shop where a scam artist tried to convince me that the same type of jacket that he was selling for 2,500 costs 4,000 in H&M. He was lying of course and that is why I label him a scammer. Deceit.
In the end, with 10pm approaching and the shops about to close, I was left with the choice of bargaining this guy down to a reasonable price for his cheap quality jackets or just going to a legit shop and paying the fair price on their labels for their good quality clothes.

Almost every shop here have two common signs " Fashion k daur mein guarantee ki iccha na kre" which means "Don't expect guarantee in this time of fashion" and "Aap cctv ki nigrani mein hai" which means "You are under cctv surveillance". Even though they don't have cctv installed in their shop they just have the sign.

I bought a cloth from the same Bazaar, the shopkeeper said 1200 and i bought it for 350 and I am a INDIAN.
So moral of the story BARGAIN.

It's shocking to see what a horrible mindset these people have for those who have come in their country to visit and contribute to the tourism economy. After seeing this and that of Amer , I have second thoughts on visiting Rajasthan.

I live in Mumbai. Can't translate everything what he said to you but, the owner did asked the servant the price of the sweaters that was placed in that rack, He replied something 600 rupees and the the owner told him to mark the 'double' price for the same while showing.

Wow what an nice answer for H&M costs 4500 in India , but u showed with a pic of H&M jacket cost 2000 only ,
Best place is where fixed price is written,so that some people who dont have fair idea about a product 's price should get cheated.It doesn't matter whether you are local Indian or coming from other states of India or outside India. This is applicable for everyone who just go to these kind of markets.
A tip for you Dale, on the local shops.. Like Meenu even if the price tag shows 2000rs that actually worth less than 1000... Almost all the shop has the same things..you can bargain...
In local stores even 2000mrp is not the real price you could still negotiate it . Only in malls and official stores they sell for original price. The rest are just fake printed price stickers

In india don't believe MRP tags . MRP shows 2000 but real price is below 500. Some Indians think foreigners earn more so it's ok to sell with fake MRP 😂
I own a store at Mumbai.. everytime a foreigner visits at my store i just try to maintain a distant and try to have him/her look by him) herself that's better way to tackle someone rather than running behind them.
Its true. Say Hello and then let the foreigner look. There is nothing worse that someone following you around. In the west we only do this to people who will steal, so it does not show respect. People are more likely to buy from you if you give them space.

I been to Jalandhar and Amritsar it was amazing, My stepdad was an Indian man we use to walk by and see what I liked and he would go n buy it so I didn't get scammed.

And don't pay more than 600-700 rs as final price.

One tip : If you are shopping in a local shop in India, the price mentioned on the tag in not the actual one.......if the tag have 1500 on it, you can buy it in 1000-1200. rupee

I appreciate the way you bargain at local shops and know their mentality. But honestly being an Indian, I am so disappointed by the behaviour of these greedy shopkeepers. Dale for your kind information...if you visit a shop in India then don't just pay by looking at the price tag unless is a genuine brand shop.... always ask them to lower the price...and if it's Rs. 2000 then tell them to do 1500 or 1300....
You can get a good quality hoodie in Rs 600- 800 .We never pay MRP on clothes in India .There is always 50-60% less

So basically, they had taken us to Bapur Bazaar when we visited Jaipur(school excursion) and the guide whom we had took us to all these shitty shops where the people were demanding more than TRIPLE the suggested price for all the goods, leave only clothes. A bottle of Mountain Dew was being charged ₹125 while it's original price is ₹35 or 40. It's all a game of Commission, the guides get around 20% of the earnings of the shopkeepers. Never trust these guides. However ending on a positive note, there are many good shops too in the Bazaar which have been running since decades, where the ppl are sincere and won't charge a penny more than the MRP

At local shops they print their own mrp in India so you have to bargain for about 30-40% because they already print double price

Actually when you buy quality clothes from a good place they are a bit expensive and plane designs but when you buy from local streets they have variety in designs colours and low price.
