One of the best parts about aviation is that we’ve all got a collection of “I must sound like an idiot!” moments, keeps us all humble and human and good-humored 😃🤙
I appreciate seeing it being from northern California (Humboldt county) ancient redwood groves. You are so close but so far away ❤ my bucket list is Long 💖thank you ❤
The airport had been completely closed for the three weeks leading up to our trip, and had only opened a day or two before we landed there. If you look close you can see the old runway on the right, we landed on a newly constructed runway on the left (78 feet wide). We landed there on the way home as well, and they had started to remove the old runway on the right in order to re-pave it, making the whole runway 156 feet wide. I cut out most of the really confusing "Who's on first" conversation with the ATS, he didn't understand the NOTAM and couldn't convey what it meant - mostly because he was ~300 miles away and hadn't seen what was happening.
With that NOTAM info I would have done an inspection pass. Super great visuals from Mike Victor Uniform Foxtrot. Is all of Canada subjects of the British Crown or is the French underground? 🌏🇦🇺
saw your beautiful Cessna parked at the FBO in YYT, never thought I'd be watching a youtube video of that same beautiful aircraft! awesome production value, subscribed!
Glen has an awesome cooking channel too! That's what he's most known for. It's called Glen and Friends Cooking. Highly reccomend both of he and Julie's channels!
So happy you're back on safe land so I don't have to worry. Enjoy your adventure and I'll be back to see the next leg of your journey. Thanks, Glen and Julie. - Marilyn
Really enjoying the series and many past videos you posted. I just bought a Cessna and my wife and I are starting to plan our trips for next spring. Great to see the places you are going. As a fellow Canadian it is great to see content from our beautiful Country. I just picked up my aircraft from Vernon BC a few weeks ago and brought it back to Ottawa. Gave me a great taste of the 1000’s of places we will land in the years to come! Bravo on your adventures together!
I just got an ad for pickle flavored Ketchup 😂 ANYWAY, what i wanted to say is seeing you fly over various land masses and waterways makes me marvel that people on foot and in boats ever found anything. It's all so huge!
Interesting flight...Earlier this summer, an airplane broker contacted me for a potential contract for ferry flight from Newfoundland to Toronto in a C172. After seeing your video, I am sad the deal never happened and I didn't get the chance to do this flight. I am amazed at the quality and size of airports on Québec' Côte Nord for such little population.
I was surprised at how busy the Côte Nord airports were - every one that we stopped at had cargo and personnel flights to the mines and hydro dams, as well as just moving stuff to all the towns that don't have road access. We also saw a lot of air ambulance and Hope Air flights.
I spent 3 years in Deer Lake as a kid. It's changed a lot since then but Newfoundland is still a gorgeous place. (just don't live there if you're from the Mainland...) Loving the videos, Glen and Julie!
I’m really impressed with your crosswind landings. I’ve faced a few of these touring the east coast with the Arrow but nothing like you’ve faced. Cannot wait for the next episode. 😮
21:50 Republic of Doyle. My father in law's favorite pub is the Duke of Duckworth. It is awesome. I hope you got yourself some beer and steak and kidney pie.
Last summer I traveled to Newfoundland from Wisconsin; landed in Deer Lake at midnight so we could drive to my Gran’s in Springdale, so she could drive us to spend 3 days in Saint Anthony 😅
Awesome channel! Thank you for sharing your adventures. Your trip has been a dream of mine for a long time, which I can only do in my home flight simulator, maybe one day IRL… Safe travel!
The way Blanc-Sablon gave you that NOTAM was really confusing! And the published one was super unclear, but there was and AIP supplement out going into great detail as to what was happening over there, my company flies down there regularly so we were following that closely! Also, Kegaska is technically the end of the road, and were the sign I signed is BUT Natashquan is were the pavement stops. Thanks for sharing this honestly bucket list flight!
I had read the NOTAM and phoned Blanc Sablon as a follow up, so when we took off that morning I thought I had a good picture of what was happening. But the info relayed by radio on approach threw me for a loop because it just didn't square with the info I had been given. I cut out a lot of the radio conversation with the MF ATS and we flew an inspection pass because I just couldn't figure out why he kept saying that only 78 feet of runway was open.
As a Canadian (found out I had dual citizenship in 2019) who hasn't lived in Canada since infancy I would love it if you could throw in Canada facts (not while you are concentrating on flying)
Love the channel. Watched it all and even tried a recipe from other channel. Kudos fir revamping flight plans eastward. Thinking about travelling to NFLD next summer. Now I’ll get a overview (literally).👍
Love it! We’re planning to fly out to Deer Lake next summer to tackle Gros Morne Mountain (couldn’t hike it this summer cause of weather) and this is great to see the Quebec shore route up there. Great video as always, Glen!
Allons Y Allont Ont 🤣👍👌 Tundra is the correct words instead of wood in that Northerner Area 👍👍😇 Very Nice Views 😇👍👌No idea about that Canadian TV show ? 🤔Cheers 🍻🍻
it’s a design flaw with this year of 172 - the aluminum on that part of the cowl gets really brittle. that’s the third cowl I’ve had on there, looking for a longer term solution but the only option seems to be a lot of patching and rivets.
Fantastic; I’ve been looking for a VFR upload of someone doing the north shore route recently. I sorely missed getting over to the Rock due to winds on my eastern tour a couple of weeks ago… still the one province I have to visit. Weird, I’m showing Natahsquan with 100LL in the CFS; were they just out?
There's a NOTAM for Natashquan - neither 100LL or Jet-A is available. Speaking with the airport manager they don't know if they'll ever have it again, the fuel system needs a replacement and traffic may not justify the cost. Same thing at Havre - the fuel system need to be replaced, so I pumped fuel out of drums there.
NOTAMS are suppose to be confusing... :P They truly are some of them. Need a much better system but that's a long way off I bet, great trip so far :) What two cylinders overheat, the center due to air flow... curious as to why just two.
1 & 2 overheat right up at the firewall. They both are valve rotation challenged, and we've been watching them closely. But they only overheat (and I don't mean redline overheat) if I climb to aggressively or the plane is loaded at gross weight.
The NOTAM and the controller should have explicitly said that the width of the runway was the issue. Oh, and apparently I have to watch one of your recent cooking videos as I went on a rant about "fake raisin currants in North America" because of a recent Max Miller video.
The NOTAM was so confusing - I have to imagine that it was lost in translation from French. If I had access to the original French NOTAM it would have been easier. What was Max saying about currants?
@@GlensHangar It's what Max didn't say! (That I was grumbling about.) In last week's video about English Rout Cakes (and the history "rout" parties) the recipe called for currants and he dumped in a bunch of those imposter raisins! (Bah! grumblegrumble) So my wife asked if I had watched your Christmas Nuggets video. (re the NOTAM, I just looked first on Foreflight and got English only, then on NavCanada and I see them in both EN and FR, but it seems that construction NOTAM is no longer there.)
I just realized you probably need to unload most of your stuff from the plane if you are staying somewhere since it might not be secure enough at the airport??
Airports are pretty secure, even the ones that are small and don't have fences. I leave all sorts of stuff behind, and don't worry about it. Many aircraft don't even have 'ignition' keys, just flip a couple of switches and you can start up and take off.
@@GlensHangar well you wanted to land on runway 23 and they said one side was closed that would mean it wasnt 23 since they didnt say you couldnt land on that runway so that would mean runway 05 is the side closed, right?
The numbers refer to the ends of the runway and relate to it's magnetic heading. So runway 23 is on a heading of approx 230deg, runway 05 is on 50deg. These 😊 will always be 180deg off each other as they reciprocal headiings. If there are 2 runways parallel to each other they would be called 23L or 23R, as in 23 Left or 23 Right. I hope that made sense, most of my brain cells are still waking up and haven't had their morning cuppa yet. 😊
One of the best parts about aviation is that we’ve all got a collection of “I must sound like an idiot!” moments, keeps us all humble and human and good-humored 😃🤙
Much better to ask and sound like an idiot than land on the wrong runway and look like an idiot.
As a Canadian, I love this series, I love seeing more of Canada
I appreciate seeing it being from northern California (Humboldt county) ancient redwood groves. You are so close but so far away ❤ my bucket list is Long 💖thank you ❤
I'm not going to lie, it sounded like you only had 78 feet to land. Time to test that stol kit I guess lol
The NOTAM was super confusing!
78 feet - what the heck - I was thinking “that’s not possible, they’re not in a helicopter!” Don’t beat yourself up Glen.
I still don't understand the issue with the runway. It looked pristine.
The airport had been completely closed for the three weeks leading up to our trip, and had only opened a day or two before we landed there. Labrador and Newfoundland seem so exotic to a central Kansas resident. Enjoying this flight.
Very interesting to see what it's like to travel by small plane
The "Allons-y, Alonso" was perfect! Made me laugh :D

You just have to map out all the airports without fuel - even a couple of the ones with fuel pumped out of drums. The Côte-Nord is beautiful.

So is Julie workin on her license? It was kind of sounding like she is now trying to keep better track of the controllers
Julie isn't interested in getting her license, but she does take down ATC / AWOS info and pull up frequencies for me.
Re: out into the bush
Would wilderness be a good description?
Wilderness would work - I just always fall back on calling it bush because of my time in Northern Ontario / Northern Quebec woods.
more avionics scenes/shots?
I need to rig another stationary camera, I don’t like using a handheld while flying.
