Fixing Ebay Junk - 6 SNES PART 2 - Disassemble and Clean

  • I bought a box of 6 non-working Super Nintendo. This is the first of 6 to try and get working. In this video I will explain how to disassemble and clean a functional SNES. A thorough cleaning was able to get it functioning like it was new again.
    Part 1 isn't uploaded yet, but will simply show some of the initial unboxing and testing of the consoles.

    Thanks so much for this! My brother gave me my old SNES that he found in the back of his closet for my birthday and I just started tearing it down and cleaning it while drinking beer and watching Berserk. I figured I'd have enough technical know-how to put it back together and maybe it'd be a fun puzzle but I got stuck on where the long silver screws came from. Your video is a lifesaver! Looking forward to seeing if this old girl still works once I get it back together.

    Get a tripod and I guarantee your views will explode. Also the reassembly helped me out a lot, as luck would have it I decided to fix my SNES today. Dissasembled, cleaned, tested for continuity, all checked out and I for the life of me couldn't figure out what the hell was going on, why wasn't it powering on. Then I realized there was corrosion on the jack, and voila.

    I know this was posted three years ago, but I agree with other commenters in regards that I love that you don't edit out what you're doing or speed it up or do time jumps. It makes following along in my opinion much easier. I'm at work but last night I disassembled my SNES and cleaned it up like you did and scrubbed for a long time to get marker off the console. Can't wait to get hold and reassemble! Thank you so much!

    Thanks to 3D Printing, is is nowadays possible to make a cartridge 'rack' without those pesky lockout notches so you can internally mod your NTSC model without having to use a pair of pliers to affect its resale value! Just switch out the original one for the 3D Printed Region-Free one and you can play Japanese imported titles and even the Super Gameboy 2 and Sufami Turbo without any problems! And of course, keep the original rack in case you want to revert at any time! 😁

    Hopefully this works! I had an old snes sitting in storage for over 10 years and it took me several hours to find all of the cords and hook everything up. When I tried playing a game, the screen would flash colors for a second and then turn black. It's never been cleaned so I'll give it a shot! If that doesn't work though, is there another reason that it might not be working?

    • @RetroRepairs

    Love the videos. For a beginner, are there any issues that you could see on eBay or game shops that are easily diagnosable and fixable? For example, if they say power comes on, video on but no audio. Maybe that is a common problem with a good guess at a solution. Whereas, maybe if it states power does not come on, this issue would be harder for a beginner to work on. Suggestions/Advice? Thanks!

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No power is usually an easy fix. If it's a handheld, it could just be corroded battery terminals, or a blown fuse. It really varies from system to system.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look for stuff that won't turn on. That's usually an easier fix. Systems that wont play games could be jyst a simple cleaning, or could be dead chips which is harder to diagnose and fix

      RetroRepairs I have an snes that won't show video. I've cleaned the entire thing. Replaced the power outlet because that plastic piece was broken. When I power it on it flashes red for a second then black. Just looking for what I need to try next?

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I'm not optimistic about that. It's likely a dead CPU. The snes was a crappy system when it comes to reliability. The CPU, ppu and vram are all prone to failure. If you were having graphical issues I would say its the vram, but the black screen of death normally requires a cpu replacement. The CPU has to be harvested from a known working snes, as they're proprietary Nintendo chips. At that point, I would just get a new snes.
      However, to rule out all other possibilities, i would make sure the cartridge connector is not at fault. Give it a VERY thorough clean using a card, alcohol and eyeglasses wipe. Even very fine grit sandpaper like 2500 grit automotive paper. At this point you've got nothing to lose. Clean your games very well too.
      Next I would inspect all capacitors and make sure none are leaking, swelling or disfigured, keeping in mind some models have empty spots where capacitors should be on purpose.
      Check the voltage regulator. You should be getting around 12v in and 5v out. Those can overheat and cause problems.
      Lastly, try a new ac adapter if you have one to rule out power issues.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, if all else fails, you can CAREFULLY try powering on the snes while applying pressure to the middle of the cpu and see if anything different happens. There could be a cold solder joint on one of the legs. It would require reflowing the chip. See my video about reviving the pokemon yellow game. The snes cpu legs are much closer than a gameboy ic, so you need the proper tools and/or technique to do it properly and not further damage the system.

    Creating a black and white cam scan of the original chassis labels is a good idea before doing any of this. Cam scanner is available for any mobile phone and will convert the original labels to a black and white scan. From there you can remove the old labels and replace them with freshly laminated ones that match exactly the originals. I recommend clear adhesive CD lightscribe labels. They are printable with any inkjet and are a very close match. Will turn a black and white image into a transparent label
    I would not recommend 'restorative ' operations until you've scanned the systems labels in and reprinted new ones. The new owners of these units you are reselling will not be happy you have destroyed the batch and serial number label and identifying warning labels by running them through your dishwasher or sink.

    What you have to watch out for with used electronics is if it is infested with roaches and bedbugs you could have an expensive exterminator bill on you hands.

      Chris Crawford there's a few that managed to stay in good condition. Unfortunately that's a rarity. Probably less than a third are still their original colour throughout. Maybe less.

      I found the yellowing is caused by exposure to uv/ sunlight..great job on keeping yours in good shape.
