Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.
My best friend had one of these and he used to loan it to me over the weekends. We would move around with it in a backpack looking for our circle of friend's household with a free tv to play on. A piece of history brought back to life. My childhood in a flash there.
A perfect video. No BS filler talk or cheesy, inappropriate music; just visually clear and to the point. Perfect restoration (someone commented below about getting the grey right and not going too far). I'd rate this 9.98 out of 10, only because it would have been that extra .02 better if you had booted up Super Metroid instead, but that's just personal preference. :)
What catches my eye is how well electronics are built. Understandable circuitry and well made components. Those where the times... And further hypnotising to see it coming alive as if it just have left the factory.
It looks beautiful. And, unlike many other restorations I've seen, it actually still looks the correct shade of gray after the restoration rather than looking a wrong kind of dull whitish or really bright gray. Good stuff.
Hey, great job! I have read a lot about retrobright but I'still afraid of dunking my c64 into that, so I have some questions I must ask you. How is the plastic after UV? Is it still ok? What about its texture?
@@CP200S Speaking from experiments and experience - the plastic will actually become less brittle after the yellowing is treated. Texture will be completely preserved. Just make sure not to ever use the salon cream method as any uneven application will result in bright streaking across the plastic. So far, the retrobrite technique has proven to be fairly safe and forgiving. However, if you're using sunlight over UV LEDs you want to constantly check on any parts that weren't originally white, off-white, or bright gray. Sunlight acts much quicker than the LEDs so keep that in mind or you'll risk bleaching darker colored plastics. One of my first tests was on SNES power and reset switches which are a purple colored plastic - my childhood switches were pretty much brown from being in a shed for nearly 10 years. The peroxide definitely turned them back to purple but not only did I make the mistake of using the salon cream, which resulted in a very blotchy appearance. I also left them out for just a little too long and ended up bleaching them. Sorry for the long reply, I'd just thought I'd add what I could to help you feel more comfortable with trying this out.
I didn't expect to see your zinc plating kit on a SNES restoration (i'm not disappointed :) +1 to nintendo for not putting their srews under the rubber pads !
@@Dynamotorsports the protection against corrosion is even better than the original as for the aesthetic you can have better finish by polishing the parts before platting them but it is time consuming, time he probably didnt want to invest for hidden parts
That's impressive getting that yellowing off I never knew that was possible. The only thing you missed was putting the cheat in at the start to give you extra turbo stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. 👍
You can do that with any kind of yellowed plastic. It won't turn your plastic into new condistion, though. It has aged and will crack easily, because the molecular structure of the plastic has been damaged. Sooner or later the plastic will also start to turn yellow again. You can't stop the plastic from degradation once it has started.
@@kaisersoymilk6912: It mainly means, the plastic ist in good condition. Nearly as good as new with most of the softeners still where they should be. As long as you do not suspend it to extreme sunlight, there won't happen too much. UV radiation is the main reason for the colour change. It destroys the molecular structure of the plastic and especially the softeners.
I love how methodical and organised each stage is in this restoration. No music or affects needed when you are this organised 👍🏽(plus you tried on my favourite game)
I remember having one of these. And my parents made me put it back in its original packaging every time I was done with it. No clue where it may be. But I bet it’s near mint if it didn’t go to the dump or a yard sale.
Brings back memory of playing your mates on a weekend. The whole online just isnt the same now think I'm just old though lol. Thanks for the video was a good watch.
You can strip down the cartridge slot further than what you did to access the inner pins and give a proper cleanup. Other than that, that's a clean restoration.
Great restoration. Would have been even nicer if you had replaced those big capacitors, which are known to be worn out in practical power on hours - thanks for the great video.
The only thing that shocks me is HOW DOES ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT make the Plastic White again!?!?!? That's the most amazing part of this entire Restoration!!!
My SNES turned yellow 3 years ago it was perfect before that, I need to return her to her former glory in the future. I've had it since 96 I believe, my first console.
Nice restoration! A tip is to put some thermal grease between that voltage regulator and the heat sink. Keeps it cooler and makes it last longer. Also, in an old system the electrolytic capacitors might need an overview. They dry out over time and stop working properly.
Excellent job, mate! I've been taking advantage of the curious circumstances, in which we all find ourselves, to completely redo my ATV tilt trailer. My MIG skills are exponentially improving, as a result. When that's done, my Jeep CJ-5 drivetrain gets some loving with new gaskets and seals.
And that's the way technical products CAN be build so that it is easy to take them apart and repair them if needed. No glue, no plastic welding, no planned obsolescence !!!
Glad you weren’t taking bets, I’d have put down a wad saying you couldn’t bring that back. Amazing, great content and all in a nice 15min package. Loved it.
To be perfectly honest when i first saw how yellow it was i didnt actually think it would turn grey again either but here we are and its mint condition again :) Really glad you enjoyed the video :)
Dennis Bautembach “surprised how easily this thing can be disassembled.” Since it’s an inanimate object, it can’t disassemble anything... but it CAN BE disassembled by a person. :)

Thank you :)

Fantastic restoration of a Snes. Certainly brought back memories, stay safe

The ultraviolet plastic treatment is amazing. I can't wait to try it on a future project!
I think they use ultraviolet to whiten teeth too.
ultraviolet in water remove the oxidation color?
Sorry, violet led is not ultraviolet light, it is only violet light

Nice work. Just as good as it looked when it left the Nintendo factory plant in Japan back in 1992.
