Greener Grass FASt! DIY Liquid Iron

  • Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) I used: amzn.to/2Ehnlbh
    Ammonium Sulfate: amzn.to/2WiV4ve
    These two bags (used at the low rate below) will give you 80,000 square feet of coverage. This is the most cost effective way I've found to green up grass using Iron.
    Mix rate for 1,000 square feet:
    0.8oz Ammonium Sulfate.
    1oz (by weight) of Ferrous Sulfate.
    (optional) add a surfactant (I use this one: amzn.to/2LWhxu9) to help 'stick' to grass.
    I first read of this here:

    Been starting to experiment with ferrous sulfate and ammonium sulfate applied via liquid this year. Thanks for the vid, it was a great help learning to dial the application rates in.

      Hands down the most frugal way to do it. Glad it helped man!

    Love the cardboard idea, wish I would have done that in my video. So I went with 4 oz. per 1000, didnt add the ammonium sulfate. I actually have some black blades. It's not noticeable but it did darken my lawn overall. and it is still going. Now the funny thing is, I mixed it with tenacity as I wanted to use it as my second round of pre-em. I have little white spots in my yard of some broadleaf weeds and some black grass blades in other areas. All not noticeable from a distance but definitely a conversation piece. Thanks for the ideas, I will most likely lighten up on the ferrous to 2 oz. per 1000 next go around. Plenty of N still so Ill bypass on the ammonium sulfate. Great video brother, they KBG is looking amazing on the hell strip from the reno.

    Why does the bag say Aluminum?

  • @realistreset8336
    @realistreset8336 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm confused. 1 oz is about 28 grams. Why does the description say 1 & 0.8 oz when you said you used 42 and 36 grams? Did you use 1.5 gallons? It looked like you filled the bucket to about 6 liters.

    • @kove
      @kove  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1 and 0.8 oz are the safe rate per 1,000 sqft. 42 and 36 grams are the total amount I used in the first application. I'll make a follow up video sometime rehashing this subject and will be much more clear. ;)

    So was it 140 grams on a thousand square feet?
    Here the climate is cooler and wetter than your area and the grasses are fine fescues and rye.
    We go 100 grams a thousand, of ferrous sulphate as a heptahydrate to green up but as heavy as 500 grams or a pound of heptahydrate to blacken moss filled turf.
    All these as a drench not foliar ie: applied with plenty of water especially to treat moss as it has no vascular system and only the moss wetted with the solution will die.
    I feel you have added to the confusion by not explaining the formulas out there of chelated iron, ferrous sulphate as a heptahydrate and the different kinds of chelated iron.
    Folks will want to follow your "recipe" but not know what to buy.
    I hope you don"t see this as criticism as I just hope you will mention the form of iron you decided to use for your area and conditions and why.
    You might say you picked a chelated product as being readily available to the plant or the heptahydrate as being much cheaper?

    • @kove
      @kove  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it was 140g/1000sqft. Interesting you use this for moss. Where is this, care to elaborate? 500 is crazy high!
      I tried to stick to one thing without tangents. I decided to leave out the formulas and using different Irons because of this.
      I did use this Iron source because it's much cheaper, which brings up being frugal with lawn care.
      The best comments make you think. I'll certainly be revisiting this later this season, all good points you've brought up. Thank you 😊

      @@kove Hi!
      Sorry for the preaching.
      I am five hours north of Seattle Washington so in winter low light levels and near constant rainfall make the evergreen trees very happy but the turf....not so much.
      Indeed the heptahydrate is the most reasonably priced.
      You can't really kill moss here, only piss it off, so that's why the high rates.
      You would soak the turf, unless it was already damp them hope for two dry days above 50 degrees after application.
      Everything goes black then power rake or verti cut and the turf has light and nitrogen now.
      I use the 7% chelated product at other times in the warm season.
      It was fun to see your interesting and well thought out video!
      That test will be helpful to many folks and will encourage them to have more fun in the yard!
      Thank you for making it!
