There's another category I'd like to add. The no-faff bike, i. e. your mechanic would dream about but you service your bike on your own. Externally routed cables, high-end wheels with cup and cone bearings (Shimano or Campagnolo), round seat-post, separate bar and stems and alloy bottle cages on a metal frameset.

    The Reasonable Rider
    - Rides a reasonably nice bike. Didn't sell a kidney for it but it's not the cheapest thing on the group ride either.
    - It is reasonably well maintained. It isn't spotless and definitely shows signs of use. However the chain is clean, it shifts like new, never creaks and never seems to have a mechanical...
    - Appears to be reasonably knowledgeable. They can't name any of the pro peloton or seem to know what Q factor is but they can always fix you up enough to get you home despite not being a bike mechanic
    - N+1 does not appear to apply to them...

      - And always carry some spares (chain/inner tube/pump/tools) hidden in bag uder seat or/and at frame triangle. Maybe backpack.
      - Bike is usually NOT in factory specification (more about later)
      - Highly possible mixing some groupset components like Shimano casette/Sram derailleur/KMC chain... to fit bike to purpose ;)
      - This above is because he/she own bike for years, upgrading/replacing worn parts for new (better).

My style is a bit Volvo-like: decent mid-level 10 kg gravel bike, quite nice and a joy to ride but not likely to get stolen, understated paint job that just came that way, 105, flat MTB pedals, lightweight carbon wheels (with logos/decals removed) and Conti 5000s, full mudguards. My riding kit, most of the time, is GoreTex rain gear over a flannel shirt, khakis, and decent-looking, waterproof, and very comfy Asolo walking shoes. Much to my surprise, now that I think about it, this bike setup does in fact express who I am fairly accurately. Maybe I should get a cat.

I must be the exception because mine is the opposite of my personality. I usually just try to blend in and avoid attention. But when I wanted to buy a Trek Domane SL6 in early 2021, the only one in my size coming to my city within the next year was in Purple Abyss which will catch your attention. I would have chosen flat black if it was an option. But I now admit that it's pretty fun in large events when strangers ride up to me to say they love my bike.

I am just a rider who cleans, lube and replace parts as needed. As long as my bike can bring me from point A to point B, short or long distances, I am good with it. It's an 11 year old Specialized Allez, the original parts were already replaced or upgraded, except for the fork, handle bar and seat post. Still have its original colour.

My 2011 Trek Madone 5.2 was similar when purchased 3 years ago. Bone stock, except the wheels had been upgraded to period Zipp aluminum aero sttyle. I've since added carbon wheels that are tubless ready, and carbon bars, changed the seat, bar tape, and the chain as needed
Otherwise, its lovingly maintained and ridden as often as possible.

There was a big pop-culture moment for cycling fashion in the '80s here in the States, cycling gear as street culture and it looked great. And also great was the adoption of the water bottle as a popular accessory among women. For a minute it seemed those colorful water bottles were carried everywhere as a health and fashion statement.

I agree in that I enjoyed watching the upgrade (or sidegrade!) stories, but there was an undercurrent of extraordinary privilege in that segment. The new segment highlighting local bike shops encouragingly does the opposite by giving free marketing to small businesses intead of monopolist megacorps. I liked the old, but I welcome the new.

    • @lg.studio
      @lg.studio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@alexanderpolta I don't feel the same about bike shops as you unfortunately. My experience in my country: In the good ones with actual good brands the staff is arrogant, and not really willing to help, just sell the most expensive thing you might need. Their service is overpriced as hell. The category is the small shop, selling cheap stuff, staff knowing little about actual road bikes or modern bikes, fixing only the cheap bikes of the elderly, and trying to somehow fix (or better called bodge) the more expensive bikes with cheap old parts.
So my overall experience with bike shops is bad. I rather buy stuff and all tools online than go to any of those places. And believe me, I have visited over 50 shops in my 100km radius.

It's great that top designers are getting into bike clothing, but for most people, the clothes they wear should be irrelevant to the total experience of riding their bicycle. If you're racing or doing a race-y club ride, OK, wear the tight-fitting bicycling kit, but for the vast majority of cycling, anyone should just be able wear whatever they want and not get too concerned about it. When I ride my bicycle, which is almost every day, and which sometimes includes long distances over a few weeks, I just wear whatever I happen to be wearing anyway (which usually involves some form of shirt and pants), and it almost always turns out OK.

Mountain and gravel are always dirty. The road bike is clean enough. I don’t think it’s wise to pressure wash and use harsh degreaser and chemicals on your bike all the time, usually a pristine bike is an unridden bike… usually. And if you get nothing on your hands if you touch your chain, you spend too much time cleaning your bike

If there was ever a show featuring a brother and sister doing a video segment it would be mimicking and learning lessons from these two (non-sibling) siblings. When dad (Dan) is away, and uncle Si is out of the house, the chemistry and goofiness between Hank and Manon rival Ross and Monika from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Its hilarious to see who will say the most outrageously goofy thing next, and I love it. While Alex and Ollie are the older "bros" usually, setting a good example, it is fun to have the younger kids take over the house every once in a while and create a mess in the kitchen. I had so much fun watching tonight's episode.

Mine matches my personality to a T: simple, unassuming, but dependable. Just a black base model allez. Nothing special, but we get the job done. Could honestly turn it into a properly year round commuter if I wanted to

  • @billkallas1762

My number one matches me pretty closely. Old and Top grade Steel. My components are the same, Shimano 7800. I don't need 11 or 12 speed, because a 39x25 is more than low enough.
My bike may seem a little dirty, but I keep my drive train clean and operating correctly. One thing you'll notice is that none of my wheels match. I've had too many crashes.
My front wheels last forever. In fact, I just got back from a ride, and my front wheel has a Mavic Open4 CD rim on it. (So much for rim brakes wearing out your rims)

Lmao! 🤣 Ronald McDonald bike! Ketchup and mustard! ... I ride a stealth black Specialized road bike. Black is my favorite color, and I prefer a stealthy more subdued look. For myself to lay low, under the radar, not wanting to attract any attention to myself. And apparently that carries over to my bike as well! It's nickname is "Smoke" btw. 😊

Ive got five bikes, four that I use for races (depending on course distance/profile/discipline), and my winter training bike.
I keep them in the wall when I’m not riding them, they are well maintained, and I keep an eye on even the tiniest details, such as swapping all the bolts I can for titanium.
The all black ones have titanium bolts to keep that low key black frame, black writing, black bolts, etc.
I shudder to think what that makes me. 😂

#GCNTech I MUST clean my bike. It’s a compulsion. I’m the guy who shows up with a “like new” bike every time. I’m proud of my bike, spent a lot of money on it, and it takes good care of me. Keep it clean and it will last a long time. All my bikes are matte black with tan walls.

1998 Litespeed Classic; paintless, brushed, new black decals
    HED Ardenne wheelset with GP5000's
Shimano R8000 Compact; mechanical, rim brakes
    Custom 14T-30T cassette; home built
Everything either black or silver; beautiful conservative look; and spotless
Combination of the best of new and old
