I have never owned a brand new bike. I always buy secondhand bikes and then my local mechanic helps me to fix it up and upgrade parts.
In my opinion it is better to own a secondhand bike with good parts than a new bike with lower end parts. I have also bought some used wheels.
A few mistakes I made when I bought my first used bike
    1. Make sure the bike is the right size. This may sound stupid but if the bike is not the right size you will have a lot of problems down the line. Especially for younger riders I bought my bike when I was 16 thinking I will grow into it.
2.LOOK at the bottom bracket you often get so exited and this something you can easily miss like I did.
    3.Look for buckled wheels.
4.If you buy your first used bike and it has a lot of problems ask your local mechanic to explain to you what is wrong and how to see the problems so you don't make the same mistakes again.
If you can find a good used bike they can save you a lot of money.

I buy bike secondhand for resto-mod projects. Some of the things I do are take a chain checker (a stretched chain helps knock the price down). I spin the wheels to see if they're straight. I always take a multitool to undo and retighten various bolts to see if anything is seized.

I bought a used titanium frame (still using it too). No paint to hide anything, doesn't rust or
fatigue like carbon fiber; everything was superb and I got an amazing price over what I'd pay for one new. I'd never take that sort of chance on a painted bike or especially not on a carbon fiber bike!
Most everything else (components, drivetrain, etc.) is new.

I've just bought a complete 1980 lugged steel Motobecane, sight unseen. Shipping from a few states away is costing me more than the bike. This is a nostalgia buy, the same model as my first actual decent road bike I bought way back in 1979 or 80. It does have some wear and tear, but the pictures and description indicate that is original, complete, and rideable as is. As a longer-term restoration project, this will be ideal.

I showed up to buy a pair of 404 firecrests and didn’t back out when I got there and they had alloy rims. Researching later they were old zipp 404 before zipp had different levels. I took the firecrest stickers off and sold them on layer for not much of a loss. They did have a Chris king 11 speed hub upgrade, but I didn’t want 13mm internal width rims! I bought and sold many of of parts used most all wins.

I have bought a Torpado frameset second hand (I knew the seller, a school chum) that I still ride 47 years later. I bought a gravel bike second hand in 2019 from a tech at a local bike shop. Him, I did not know, but, as it was a CAD3K Kona Rove NRB DL, I prepared a sales agreement patterned on standard automobile sales agreement that would protect both him and me -- him from claims of any warranty and me from being defrauded (outstanding liens or payments, and a clear title).

On the big ticket purchases such as a mid or high end bike 'buy the seller' when you're looking at or considering the bike. If there seems something 'off' about the seller then there's a reasonable chance all is not as it seems with the bike itself either. Caveat emptor and all that.

Many brands sell lower spec bikes into poorer markets. Not actually fake but not intended for some markets but if they turn up here they could be confusing and perceived as fakes. Most brands don't manufacture themselves, most its just importing and others its just assembling mainly. In the EU we get bikes from factories that avoid EU tariffs like Cambodia, Vietnam etc but in another market like the US they may get slightly better made bikes made in mainland China. You could perceive one as fake based on the wrong manufacturing country but that wouldn't be the case. When you look around you can see some manufacturers produce excellent frames and forks at low prices and others produce poor frames and forks at high prices so always worth doing your research on what factory the brand actually uses. I think bikes are more a lifestyle product like cosmetics than about engineering. People spend extra for the right brand because of marketing, heritage or sporting success. You can often get a fantastic deal second hand if you choose the wrong brand but the right product from the right factory. Shop brands from Halfords, Decathlon, Go Outdoors etc are bought direct from the factory and retailed instore so start at a much lower price and the second hand price of those can be much lower too. A few years ago Halfords were getting a lot of their bikes from Merida in Taiwan and they were amazing frames for the money. Great bikes for a fraction of the price of the big brands. More recently they have used Insera Sena (Polygon) and some models fuji-ta like folding bikes. Some very decent factories better than some of the big brands to be honest. There is a big difference between actual quality and perceived quality. You see bikes from the more expensive high quality Taiwanese factories appearing in the cheaper shop brands at lower price points than the big brands. A shop might use a high quality factory at a £1500 price point but a big international brand maybe £2500-3000 and the Italian brands that operate on huge margins might be £4k.

Does the new kit mean ebay will soon be flooded with 2nd hand GCN bib shorts?
    Happy days!

Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1. Very light2. Solid quality build3. Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected.4. Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)

Bought a second bike to use as a commuter, seller described it as a “good” condition. Turns out it needed new brake pads, new tyres, new cables and a new stem, oh and the derailleur hanger was loose!

    • @gcntech

That doesn't sound like a particularly good condition!

Please inspect the frame of a bike VERY CAREFULLY in normal sunlight or if it is dark use a torch. I mean inspect the entire frame from Seat stays, chain stays, top tube, seat tube, down tube, head tube and fork.. the whole jolly lot. WHY? I've purchased a second hand bike only to find out afterwards when turning the bike upside down, that there was a crack in the frame where one of the seat stays joins the seat tube. Aaaaaagh!!! Gutted does not describe the feeling.

Always insist on dropping the fork out and checking carefully any ringing around the fork where the headset compression ring would sit...any "ringing" or wear due to a poorly adjusted headset should be inspected as this is a potential failure point you really wouldn't want to happen....

The reason helmet manufacturers say to replace the helmet after 3-5 years is because of compression and degradation of the foam - not because new helmets are safer. They are the same standards so they are likely the same in terms of safety.

Obviously used rim break wheels are a risk. Hard to tell how much wear the break track has had

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

A lof of rims have a ring inside the brake surface as a wear indicator. Is it even with the rest of the rim surface the rim is worn.
If there's no wear indicator you can measure the rim at the outer edge (where it don't wear) with a vernier caliper, if the rest of the rim is more than 1 mm narrower per side it's worn.
