      Hydrogen burns in ANY concentration in air, whereas gasoline vapor burns in a much more narrow window of concentration.
      But point taken. Gasoline vapor is heavier than hydrogen, so it tends to linger around ignition sources :-(

      Right. He talks about gasoline as if it isn’t flammable. It’s actually not uncommon for cars to burst into flames - how many times have you heard about a car being on fire in the news or in traffic reports? It’s fairly common. But no one ever suggests we do away with all gasoline powered cars because sometimes they burst in to flames for one reason or another

    The 67mpg is only in terms of energy. It has nothing to do with economics. For $26, which was the cost of the hydrogen fill up, I can get 13.8 gallons of gas in Albuquerque, NM. If that 13.8 gallons gets me only 300 miles of range, I got 21mpg from an economic standpoint. I'll stick with my Volt. It costs me zero to fill with my solar panels, but if I did have to pay to fill it with PNM produced power, it would only cost $1.56. That gives me an average of 61 miles of range, which equates to 74.5mpg from an economic standpoint--meaning I can drive 74.5 miles for the same cost as one gallon of gas. Even though I get over 100mpg worth of energy, it is not the same ration when looking at it from an economic standpoint.

When we want to carry load for thousands of kilometers where electric current is not there there comes Hydrogen Fuel cell for Trucks. Fuel cells may be used in Battle tanks in warfare where we need stealth(ICE is difficult with heath emission) and we cannot access electricity(EV vehicles cannot be recharged in battlefield) for long period of time.

      The cost of extracting hydrogen from the atmosphere or from water is more difficult that it seems. It will cost more to fill up a fuel cell after Toyota stops paying for your fill ups, it’s about 7x more expensive than recharging an EV. There’s benefits to both technologies and drawbacks as well. Both are much more efficient than traditional gas powered vehicles.

      @@LowerYourExpectationsPleb At this moment the hydrogen infrastructure and production is solely power by fossil fuels where electric cars have options of what it is powered from like Solar and Hydro, versus fossil fuel and nuclear. There is no need to prove what is common knowledge because the only thing that would be proved is your lack of knowledge on the subject. Elon is obviously against it due to the fact it is fossil fuel based transportation and is not the direction we need to be looking in the future no matter how misinformed the sheep public is.

    I thought he could have added that hydrogen, like electricity, is on a renewable pathway. California requires that 33% of the hydrogen must come from renewable sources (electrolysis using wind or solar, steam reformation with biogas or tri-generation fuel cells using biogas...). Disclosure: I work for the California Fuel Cell Partnership.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for mentioning the renewable angle. It's a worthwhile point. Though I wonder to what degree renewable sources remain viable if hydrogen vehicles were to sell in significant volumes.

    • @KeithMalonenativeAngeleno
      @KeithMalonenativeAngeleno 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots sources to make renewable hydrogen. You should take a look at NREL's H2 @ Scale presentation as part of DOE's Big Ideas Conference for the National Labs. It's not impossible.

      @KeithMalonenativeAngeleno 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll also add that California would not commit to this renewable pathway like electricity if they didn't think it was possible. We're doing it with electricity (which also means that H2 becomes more renewable as a result). Excess capacity on the grid can be used to split water for transportation H2, transport in natural gas pipelines (up to a certain percentage) and for fuel for stationary fuel cells.

  • @allan500m

    Hydrogen is made through electrolysis of water, splitting the water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. But the process of making hydrogen is very inefficient, so about 50% of the energy is lost in the process. Then when the hydrogen car drives on the road, it converts the hydrogen back into electricity, but that again is a very inefficient process with about a 50% loss. Finally the hydrogen car can use it's produced electricity for its electronics and electric motor with more than 80% efficiency.
    But of the original amount of energy made at the powerplant, less than 20% of that energy is made into propulsion on the wheels of the hydrogen car. For a normal electric car, that number would be around 80%. Or said in another way, using hydrogen cars requires 4 times more electricity/energy than a normal battery powered electric car.

  • @FlipBoxStudio
    @FlipBoxStudio 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This car has been out since last year. Though, there doesn't seem to be any legit owners reviews and videos anywhere on the internet, which is highly suspect. Surely anyone that actually likes or dislikes owning this car can't wait to share their opinions online. I have a feeling Toyota has buyers sign a non disclosure agreement in order to prevent negative judgements about ownership of this particular vehicle. So far all I've managed to dig up are sponsored videos, articles, and forums that all seem to be controlled by Toyota. This video is the most honest one so far, but still leaves a lot of details about hydrogen fuel cell cons that would probably send most people running.

Realistically they would still need fossil fuels and a lot of land but the use of solar would greatly reduce fossil fuel consumption also no need to have large trucks using more fuel to deliver it to the stations or to have oil companies spending and using enormous amounts of resources to drill for fuel.

      The reason is that electrolysis of water is, and will remain (thanks, Physics!) MONUMENTALLY inefficient and extremely expensive. There's no business case for hydrolysis. There's no strategy or infrastructure to create large scale hydrogen production from water.
      For the foreseeable future, hydrogen is simply another fossil fuel product. Which is why the oil companies want you to buy into it.

    Hydrogen is extremely flammable.However this is mitigated by the fact that hydrogen rapidly rises and often disperses before ignition, unless the escape is in an enclosed, unventilated area. Demonstrations have shown that a fuel fire in a hydrogen-powered vehicle can burn out completely with little damage to the vehicle, in contrast to the expected result in a gasoline-fueled vehicle.

    If that $26 represents 300 some miles ..I have to say you may as well stick with a real Prius or BEV .. Plus the issue of the Hydrogen potentially coming from fossil fuels.. sounds like going backwards from a cost benefits perspective.

    Damn it! How embarrassing. Why is it that tonight (Apr 20, 2017) is the first I've ever heard of this car? And it was only because it popped up in the right margin of my Yahoo email. Damn, am I that out of touch with the world? This looks interesting, and is a new exciting edition that even makes the Prius look sorta' old school. We'll see how this goes, I have high hopes for this one, and when it's time to update my daily driver, this may be something I'm looking at.

    Really don't make sense. My Prius was $20k new. I get avg 48mpg, less than $20 to fill tank. approximately 400miles on one tank of gas. This Marai gets a little over 300 miles a tank and the car costs around $50k! A "possible $6 k tax break. With $15k rebate for fill ups. And cast nearly $30! For fill ups. You do the math, am I missing something other than its more environmentally better. If you subtract $6k tax rebate and $15k fuel incentive the Miria is at the very least a $30,000.00 if you keep it long enough to use all the fill up incentives. ??

  • @AaronSchwarz42
    @AaronSchwarz42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where to refill the main issue // build the stations & they will come ???

    • @AaronSchwarz42
      @AaronSchwarz42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      312 miles for $27 of hydrogen seems reasonable enough // ~$0.09/ mi relatively cheap / not like a Nissan Leaf lol since electricity even cheaper & the regular Prius 45MPG & $4/gal also very inexpensive to operate ...

    • @AaronSchwarz42
      @AaronSchwarz42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck getting a person to pull a 3000lb metal safety cage 300mi for $30 pay lol
      Also there are lots of emerging ways to make hydrogen aside from the thermal decomposition of natural gas as you mentioned / sustainable hydrogen will become a mainstay for hydrogen rocket fuel & for hydrogen to refill fuel cell electric vehicles like the Mirai

    • @AaronSchwarz42
      @AaronSchwarz42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For $75K the Mirai seems like an early adopters hydrogen wet dream come true & since you can only buy & refuel them in CA, its really like a big beta test that Californians can get down on to try it out // fully electric seems like the best way forward for now / & fuel cells are perfect as electric car range extenders ^^ if they can get the costs of the fuel cell down by swapping out platinum for something more accessible, abundant, cheaper etc with similar good performance / it doesn't have to live on a space satellite for 20 years Toyota/ Honda/ Hyundai :P
