    The hardest thing I've tried to teach people in counting is finding where 1 is. I know it naturally from dancing & playing piano, but explaining how to find one within the tempo has proven difficult for me. The best I can say is that it's usually the point where the music changes.

      @@sukey5761 The best resource I've found for this is Don Baarns' Music4dancers YT channel: th-cam.com/users/Music4Dancers: he offers a no-nonsense but simple way to think about musicality, complete with exercises . Everything is explained from scratch, for absolute beginners and the example songs come from different genres. There is a specific playlist about finding the 1, but you may want to refer to the other parts as well (particularly the phrasing series). Anyway your best bet is to watch the "from the beginning " playlist, it's absolutely worth it!!! As a musician and musicologist I can tell you playing an instrument and doing music helps a lot to understand music.
    I remember when I learnt ryhtmn as a child while playing guitar. At first It was really tough and I never understood how other musicians struck the guitar until some day it just clicked in my head and I got it. Since then my hands just move fluently and I don't even know or "understand" what is happening anymore :D. I think that is common to dancers too. At some point we just have to learn and understand rythmn. :D
    Rythmn is hard to explain you just have to work on it. As a musicologist I can tell you there are no humans with "no ryhtmn" it's just a natural thing inside us we have to explore. :D
    Great video for beginners by the way. As a musician I would explain it the same way. :)

    Wooaahh I already know how to count from piano but this was still so helpful! In addition tho, when there are those 3 beats (like at 3:29 when Jessie says 8 e &), those are actually not part of the 4 counts within a beat. They're called triplets that divide the beat into 3 even sections. In piano we said them as 1 & a, 2 & a, 3 & a, etc. But overall, really REALLY helpful video! And btw we love you Clay 😊

    • @maxhwoo
      @maxhwoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Exactly ... ballet popularized the 8 count, but really counting in 4:4 for 4:4 music makes sense for other styles ... unless the specific accent pattern your hitting goes for the length of 2 bars, it’s a little misleading / unnatural to use the 8 count for other dance styles...

    • @albertlaque904
      @albertlaque904 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The way they counted was confusing, I was thinking triplets as well. Haha. I think these counts are more guided towards beginners that have not studied music.

    • @maxithewoowoo
      @maxithewoowoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Actually I'm pretty sure those are part of the 4 count, because you can squeeze a 4th count in there (just say "8 e & a" and you'll find that it matches the beats, just the "a" is silent). Triplets would be a little slower

    i was part of a marching band before i started dancing, and we were required to learn to read music. Specifically, COUNTING the beats of the music. And must i say it helped out a lot when i finally got to choreographing and really just catching the beat when i was dancing. When you learn to read music, you'll learn about time scores, quarter notes, half notes, eight notes, etc. You also learn about accents and off beats that tell you how hard hitting a note is or soft( which can be used for based sounds or lite "ka"/ snares/hit sounds) and things like that so it can be a great introduction if you really want to get into utizilizing counts and sounds in your dancing so your musicality level as a whole will improve and you can choreograph better.

    As a hardcore music theory student, I didn't pick up "syncopation" until a few years in. Basics can take a bit in practice. Yet, you guys are teaching it to dancers. Point is, "syncopation" (art of actually trying to avoid playing rhythms on expected beat hit) is what makes all music good. In this video you're explaining how to dance with syncopation!!! Genius!!!

      You got this and to share with my experience, I would just watch people dancing through youtube or Instagram, whether be choreography, freestyle or battle. Be active and observe which move that you like and think of how it suits your style. Then, copy that one move you like into practice and repetition until you're comfortable. The more you do this process, you're building a foundation of yourself and your style. If you want to further progress, I would recommend going to dance classes whether to be a dance studio near you or STEEZY and go in for a class. This lets you be more aware of your body movement, how you can take those classes and apply to yourself when doing choreography or freestyling. This is pretty much it for my dance experience and wishes you all the best for your dancing journey .

    Gf hacking here)☺️✨ definitely going to subscribe to you guys! Love the energy here n most of all I’m trying to get back on the choreography prow! I use to dance my life out n honestly don’t know how all of a sudden I can’t create a dance step 🧐. It’s a nightmare! I tried a yr ago and maybe a few more times around there…3yrs bk! Befor that…strictly 10yrs ago… I was killing it then.
    Dance was the only thing I knew! Actually my whole life I just been bursting out with dance moves randomly throughout the day! And until I was interested in creating again I didn’t realize I lost how to do choreography🙄😬🤔 I appreciate u guys so so much and I’m happy to b apart of the channel🤗💐✨
