History and context are SO important and I love how everyone emphasized that here. Especially for dances rooted in THE culture. It is disrespectful to siphon those dance forms and not pay homage to the communities and struggles that birthed them.
What does it mean to "siphon" a dance form? Is it mimicking? I'd be ok with somebody trying out any of these styles even if that sombody doesn't know much about the history. Most of the dancers in the video emphasize self-expression as well as community. And, really, dancing isn't the saving the world; it's dancing, so why not? Let people have fun and do their thing.
I've been b-boying for years. If I knew, or practiced, other styles today, I would be a much better b-boy. Just by watching how other dancers interpret their dance and the music, there is a lot of inspiration that you can get from dances besides your own

aweee seeing Dennis Danehy talking on the history and about his father like that is just sooo beautiful! That was finally the most comprehensive and true dance list for locking I've seen since being only on TH-cam. Like when people doing wrist rolls kinda do it just in one place.
what's really funny, they show that same doc movie on everything lmao. I first seen it forever ago, then I went to a Don Campbell workshop, and they showed it there too, lmao. Like, 'Why lecture? there's an hour long video on it!' lmao. His son taught the workshop while Don chilled and watched.

As a shuffler and as others have pointed out, it is crucial to also include the "T-Step" along with the Running Man as the foundational moves. These two together is what makes shuffling and the illusion that one is gliding through the dance floor. Also as someone from the Chicagoland area, "Mike n Ikes" is not a name used in shuffling. As you said, it has a lot of names and shuffling commonly uses "Crab" like from hiphop or "Heel Toe", but the name "Mike n Ike" is directly referencing Chicago Footwork. While the move is very similar, the name and style differentiate the two. Look up Chicago Footwork by King Charles and Pause Eddie and you'll see where "Mike n Ikes" comes from. I love that the video is showing a glimpse of the history of each dance so it's important to know these terms and where they came from! Otherwise cool video!
Heel is different from Mike n ikes. In funk social dances from 60s/70s this move was the Watergate or the funky chicken. Even further back to Vernacular solo jazz its connected to the Mashed potato or the twist
I genuinely love how every modern dance pays homage to it's origins and community. I started breaking a few years ago from an old teacher who was around for the birth of it. I found it so interesting in how it was so young yet had such a rich history and how many legendary bboys and bgirls are passing on their knowledge to a new generation.

Your subtitles are not consistent as well. This is really good content and it can be better

So inspiring. If I could I'd try them all. These were so fantastic to learn about!! Appreciate the history lesson so much ♡
I start ballroom last year and have been loving it but these past few months I'm been looking into breaking and been meeting people. I'm loving all the new stuff I'm learning about, so many ideas and avenues of creativity
This was so informative and entertaining! I absolutely love it! As a dancer, it amazes me how many dance styles there are and how enterwined several dance styles are. It was so great hearing about the history of each style shown too. I hope you make more like this. This was incredible 👑

One thing that I really love about being a (mostly) self-taught dancer is that I've never noticed all the different styles that I've incorporated into my choreographies! I'm mainly a hip-hop, shuffler and waving + whacking dancer, but I've recently looked into breaking to spice up my solo performances. It's amazing how you could use multiple styles in one choreography to compliment each other!

Tbh I know nothing about dancing but this video is so cool! They really speak though passion you can see it in their eyes🔥 I love the story and example too it help me with 0 basics to follow Love this video❤❤
Regarding the bit of history provided by the ballet dancer. Back when I was 16 I was given a school assignment to write about the history of a dance form. We were music students and this teacher was a dancer. I picked the only one I could find books about in the library which was ballet. In my short essay I wrote basically an extended version of what the dancer in this video said. About the origins in Italy. That teacher not only failed me but berated me in front of the whole class saying "everybody knows that ballet is french!!". After all these years I feel vindicated. (This was in 2001).
Ooh I wasn't very interested in dancing that much (only doing it for fun) but now I actually might learn it for reals! Locking and watching seem so fun ❤
I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH! I've been waacking for 20 years! Trained with Lollipop and other old school pioneers! Fred Mayor did a beautiful job introducing my beloved style.
that was incredibly educational and digestable information. I love Steezy studios, yall pioneering education and accessibility to it for new generations!
Ballet seems unrelated among those mostly street styles of dances. If you incudes ballet why don't include other genres: various Latino dances (salsa, rumba, cha-cha etc), step dance, disco dance, classic hip-hop dance?
Thank you so much! This was soo informative!!! I’ve spent my whole life knowing nothing about dance but lowkey wishing I could be a dancer🥲 Now I have so much knowledge and a place to start which is such a game changer!! Would love to see more videos like this!

As a shuffler I do have to add one major thing that was overlooked. T-step. I'm not gonna be a gatekeeper like the old shufflers were saying that "its not true shuffling unless there's t-step" but its equally criminal to only include running man as the main step and completely overlook the t-step given how fundamental it is/was to the origin of the style.

I'd heard dance was a form of self-expression but I'm so shocked to see how many gestures have actual communicative meanings ingrained in them. Body language conveying words and signals!
This is so interesting, I’ve been a dancer for almost 15 years and there’s a lot I don’t know. It was nice learning about other styles too!
learnt so much from this video, I can't believe how much info there is out nowadays, thanks steezy, crazy stuff again
This was so informative and entertaining! I absolutely love it! As a dancer, it amazes me how many dance styles there are and how enterwined several dance styles are. It was so great hearing about the history of each style shown too. I hope you make more like this. This was incredible 👑
僕はロックダンスをやっているんですがめちゃくちゃいい動画ですね!!
知らないジャンルがたくさんあり、それぞれのイントロデュースの選曲が素晴らしいと思いました!!
These were so interesting to learn the history, heart and energy of these dance styles! it really strengthens the strong notion of us all as one nation of people - who inexplicably MUST express ourselves through motion!
i was feeling and rhinking a LOT from these amszing segments but i really found myself SMILING fastest at Bhangra - the pure PLAY got straight to me!
This video was sooo cool and informative. I really appreciated the diversity in teachers and dance styles too. I’m not even a dancer, but I love learning more about all kinds of performing arts. So good!

gravity is such a charismatic dancer!
As an Indian despite being a street dancer my first attention went to bhangra, very proud!❤
I loved that section so much, after watching this video I went to look up specifically bhangra dance videos and ended up watching a lot! the dance has so much personality and life
@@laneybobaney7415 hahaa I'm soo glad! Feeling proud to belong in the place where this dance originated from!
Shouts to ya'll for representing THE HISTORY. With a name like Steezy you naturally would but it's so good to hear from our people give reference to the past and the foundations of the craft.
Don Campbell’s son at the end there! Way to bury the lede! As an ageing breaker, always love hearing about dance history, great vid me and my kids enjoyed 🕺
You're still the only breaker I know who's tried it in zero-g, I'd say ageing has only made you cooler.
Oh, and the saving lives stuff is nice too I guess :p
One thing that I really love about being a (mostly) self-taught dancer is that I've never noticed all the different styles that I've incorporated into my choreographies!
I'm mainly a hip-hop, shuffler and waving + whacking dancer, but I've recently looked into breaking to spice up my solo performances. It's amazing how you could use multiple styles in one choreography to compliment each other!
I love it that I'm an old lady Drag Race fan and I know about and already admire these cultural dances ❤ Watching ballroom will cure depression too!
would love to see a follow up on partner dances! love getting to see the breakdowns and historical context for these dances!
This video was so well made! I loved the clear explanations and demonstrations from the instructors.
I’d never heard of dancehall before but I really liked not just the style, but the vibes of the guy showing it. Beautiful ❤
Where are ya from?
AH love you so much Steezy❤️ what a fantastic video concept- and so well put together! Y’all always share top tier knowledge and are making the dance world a better place fr

I LOVE this, the way they all talked about the origins and the history behind each style makes me so happy! Beginner dancers need to understand that is not all just about the movement but the knowledge and understanding of where the style came from to be an amazing dancer❤️
Hola, Mariana!
Thanks for being super friendly, introducing planet cultures by dance, and the profit you people make is a lot, thank you
Fantastic video, love the historical context for each style. Would love to see a part 2!
Also -- afro category/program when?? I NEED IT IN MY LIFE 🙏
Honestly I’m new to dancing and just started on the intro to dance program.. I found this video to learn more about each of the different styles of dancing.. but being born and raised in Melbourne.. I didn’t know that shuffling originated in Melbourne I cannot wait to start learning more about dancing in general.. wish me luck! 🔥
KRUMP needs more love!!!
THANK YOU ALL for these essential presentations !!! 🙏❤🙂

Wow! Never knew Bhangra was in steezy store. It's one of the best dance styles in india ❤😊
This is one best and most important dance videos I’ve ever seen! 🔥 Thank you! 🙏🏼
Wow...thank you for the fine, comprehensive summary - with dance movements you show, as well. Appreciate you
Ooh I wasn't very interested in dancing that much (only doing it for fun) but now I actually might learn it for reals! Locking and watching seem so fun ❤
I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH! I've been waacking for 20 years! Trained with Lollipop and other old school pioneers! Fred Mayor did a beautiful job introducing my beloved style.
Such an incredible video ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks Steezy !
that was incredibly educational and digestable information. I love Steezy studios, yall pioneering education and accessibility to it for new generations!
My favorites were
krump - vogue - afro - wacking - looking.
Am gonna try learn this dances 😊
this is so helpful, now i know what i want to try, not just to „learn dancing“. thank you very much!
Ballet seems unrelated among those mostly street styles of dances. If you incudes ballet why don't include other genres: various Latino dances (salsa, rumba, cha-cha etc), step dance, disco dance, classic hip-hop dance?
Maybe unrelated rather than irrelevant?
@@NatalieBass209 Thanks. Corrected my post.
Maybe he will do a part 2 this was great.
@JuliaInMerica also they're probably focusing on promoting styles that they currently have teachers for on their platform!
Ballet is a really good style to know. It can feed other styles very nicely.
seeing the different dance styles back to back gives the feeling of watching different martial art techniques.
Ayer ví el video de "Cómo comenzar a bailar?" Y hoy me aparece este. Es el destino💫
Thank you so much! This was soo informative!!! I’ve spent my whole life knowing nothing about dance but lowkey wishing I could be a dancer🥲
Now I have so much knowledge and a place to start which is such a game changer!! Would love to see more videos like this!
Afro and Dancehall combined ❤️
gimmi more of this!!
Dancing is such a diverse language. Each direction has its own spotlight.
Would be sweet to see a follow up with how these forms of dancing have opened opportunities for these dancers! Who, what or where! 🙌🏻
Hi, Leslie! As you like to dance, you can dance my choreographies of joyful and lively Brazilian songs. All my choreographies have their own step-by-step tutorial so you can learn them. Welcome and enjoy the samba! 🥳🥳 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
I've been dancing since i was a kid and this video was so fun to watch!!!!!! such talented people ❤
Bhangra is very popular and enjoyable dance in India🇮🇳
We enjoy Bhangra in weddings🤩🤩 whether know it well or not😄😄
Love how you guys ordered the appearances of the styles and actually covered so many styles I had no idea existed!
(Ngl I was waiting to see locking and I ended up watching the whole video just to see it at the end. I guess that's one way to get more watch time haha)
Thank you for this!!
I'm brand new to dancing (started like three weeks ago) and i really want to discover many different styles. Thanks so much for this!
I’m into dancing to K-pop and they always blend different types of dance styles so this was very much needed. Thank you Steezy 😊
This is SUCH a good video, thank you! Please make more!!!
Hi, Alinayu! As you like to dance, you can dance my choreographies of joyful and lively Brazilian songs. All my choreographies have their own step-by-step tutorial so you can learn them. Welcome and enjoy the samba! 🥳🥳 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
