This boss fight really shows how strong Gandalf must've been to single handedly fight and kill a Balrog, even if he didn't survive.

I like how Tar Goroth actively speaks during both encounters, even if the game refuses to give any sort of translation. A good reminder the Balrogs are in fact sapient and not mindless monsters. I think he mentions Carnan’s name at least once, but that’s a given thanks to their history.

One thing is that they have power, wisdom, AND can use spells, like the Istari/Wizards can, even if not reliant on them. Since they're both Maiar.

I think most people find it "Boring" and "Underwhelming" because it was mostly the spirit of Carnan fighting it. Let's be honest, did you expect to 1v1 him with Talion? It's awesome that they added a Balrog battle to the game but they had to have someone help you. The other option would just be dodging him and shooting weak points, then press control to mount him and do more damage, rinse and repeat. Is that any better?

@@ori6990 well, it would've been boring to most audiences in the Fellowship of the Ring movie if they had to watch 15-20 mins to show how Gandalg fought his Balrog for several days, going from the bottom of the mountain river all the way to the highest peaks of Kirak Zigil (the tower scene where he kills the Balrog for those who don't know), and then with all of his remaining power stab the bastard with a lightning sword. I also need to point out that Gandalf fought this demon constantly during those days with a power handicap. You can pull that off in a game and make it look good but in a movie setting that is hard and may bore your audience.

That comes down to the way they fell to their corruption. The Balrogs traded their purity for physical might and battle prowess, while Sauron and Morgoth gave it up for the power to dominate and control others, including the Balrogs (although it's a rather moot point whether or not they actually controlled the Balrogs directly, as their interests were aligned). In a 1v1 fight, the Balrogs would likely be able to destroy even Morgoth, but it would never come to that due to the nature of Morgoth's (and to a lesser extent, Sauron's) power. Which isn't to say Sauron was a pushover physically, he stood half again as tall as the tallest elf and it took the two greatest fighters of their time to bring him down, during which they tragically died.

Balrogs and Dragons were common soldiers in Melkor's Army. In Sauron's Army, they're more like WMDs. When Melkor was captured by Ungoliant, he called forth an Army of Balrog to rescue him.
The good news is that in that age, they had the technology, as well as there existing people were strong and badass enough to fight and defeat these beings. It does help that the Angels had a more active role in helping.

Without Morgoth, I don’t think Sauron has any power over the Balrogs. In the game’s story, he’s sent orcs to try to recruit Tar Goroth, which they fail to do. If there were any under his command, he’d probably have used them against Minas Tirith.

The fight, however, was quite underwhelming in my opinion, even a bit funny at times watching the robotic movements. I realize there is only so much you can do, but personally, I think it would have been perfect if they had a cut-scene introducing the Balrog and incorporating some mission where you lure it out into the path of the enemy and use it to your advantage, or along those lines.
Going up against it with carnan really took away the size factor and made the Balrog much less intimidating and just another enemy to deal with. Nevertheless, i know i likely stand alone with my opinion, because most people just want more action and battles.

The Two Towers; Chapter 5, The White Rider:
'Then tell us what you will, and time allows!' said Gimli. 'Come, Gandalf, tell us how you fared with the Balrog!'
'Name him not!' said Gandalf, and for a moment it seemed that a cloud of pain passed over his face, and he sat silent, looking old as death. 'Long time I fell,' he said at last, slowly, as if thinking back with difficulty. 'Long I fell, and he fell with me. His fire was about me. I was burned. Then we plunged into the deep water and all was dark. Cold it was as the tide of death: almost it froze my heart.'
'Deep is the abyss that is spanned by Durin's Bridge, and none has measured it,' said Gimli.
'Yet it has a bottom, beyond light and knowledge,' said Gandalf. 'Thither I came at last, to the uttermost foundations of stone. He was with me still. His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake 'We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin's folk, Gimli son of Glóin. Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day. In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazaddûm: too well he knew them all. Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair.'
'Long has that been lost,' said Gimli. 'Many have said that it was never made save in legend, but others say that it was destroyed.'

Since it's Balrog, it might be talking on Melkorin, a Valarin dialect used by Morgoth and his followers, and later used by Sauron to create the Black Speech, for example "Ghashizik" - "ghash" means "fire" on Black Speech, I don't know how to translate "izik", but I think the whole word means "Burn!". But I have no clues for "Onguk nakhan".

    • @cerberusrex5275

I say this as Sauron said something similar to Celebrimbor and the she-elf during the final boss fight, and the subtitles read ''Come to your end''. So the Balrog might have said ''I'll end you!'' or something like that. Not sure though....havent heard of an ''melkorian'' dialect of valarin either....

      Earth General not really
That balrog was twice this one’s size
Also Gandalf is essentially a god
      And also this isn’t canon

He is super powerful, but there are plenty of others who are WAY more powerful than him.

I thought this boos fight was fun and did a good job illustrating that the super powerful carnan and super powerful talion/celebrimbor could barely contain him

Talion: "This foe is beyond us"
Celebrimbor: "not with the spirit of Carnan by our side"
    Carnan: "..." *Doesn't show up*

Why do they get the pronunciation wrong? It's Balrog (AL) not (ALL)

This game makes a mockery of the books. Even goes as far as to steal dialogue directly.

I remeber when it took a god like wizard to kill a balrog.

How is this any different? This one got killed by a God like spirit.

    • @mr.stuffdoer8483

Yeah this time it only took a nature spirit, a frozen lake, an undead elf, and a ranger who literally can’t die to stop it.
