  • Do not try this at home! This week on Weapons Wednesday, I thought it would be fun to test out some of the ninja gear we carry at KarateMart.com to see if it was legitimate. We've been selling the grappling hooks, ninja hand claws and foot spikes for as long as I can remember, but I've never actually tried climbing with them. So, I figured...why not test them out?!
    Here are the products I show off in this video:
    1) Ninja Caltrop Tashibishi: www.karatemart.com/ninja-calt...
    2) Ninja Hand Claws (Shuko): www.karatemart.com/ninja-hand...
    3) Ninja Foot Spikes (Ashiko): www.karatemart.com/ninja-foot...
    4) Grappling Hook: www.karatemart.com/grappling-...
    Check out all of our ninja gear at www.KarateMart.com

    I actually have a true "black" belt in Bujinkan Ninjutsu. Regardless, let me explain these weapons: the grappling hook of today is way to heavy to "carry." Using fishing hooks sized 28/0, used for smaller sharks and large grouper (because Ninja were fisherman) the could collapse all three hooks. The rope would go through the eyelets and the rope would have knots and the handles as you created all the way down the length of the rope. One thing to remember, ninja wore tabi, or split toed footwear. This split toe design enabled the ninja to climb this rope very quickly with both the rope handles and oversized knots to also stand upon. The shuko was bound with leather, instead of nylon (of course).The metal oval rings you slide your hand into would then give the ninja a very effective way to "capture" a sword strike from a samurai and with a twisting motion of the hand would lock the blade against the spikes and could disarm or using the other hand to inflict damage to the neck or face, depending whether or not the samurai was in full armor. Ninja would sometimes grip the shuko and use it as a stabbing instrument as well. As for climbing, in your demonstration, I am very sure that steel dug into the back of your hand fairly tight. The Ninja would carry straps of leather to wrap their hands to prevent this, and also making them more secure on their hands to prevent slippage. Ashiko can be very effective wearing tabi, not Nike or whatever 😆. Thick straps of leather, not the shoelace style that come with the ones today, were used also to prevent slippage. There is a certain way to secure these to the tabi. Ninja would not climb oak trees, but, rather a tree that did not have a smooth bark. Camphor trees, commonly found in Japan gave the "nooks and crannies" needed for these to be at their best in regards to climbing. I've personally climbed an oak and a cypress tree, and although it can be done, it's very tiresome. If you have questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

      "true" black belt in ninjitsu

    • @the_google_life
      @the_google_life 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@maximisatwat yes, if you're aware Ninjitsu only had "one color belt;" the white belt if you will. As you become more proficient in the fighting art, the white belt would change color from green, to brown, finally to black just by practicing, training, and experience. They were never "washed" and were worn day after day. That's why a "true" Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu school taught by Sensei Hatsumi is still using the traditional style today.

    Also put into perspective that ninjas were like 5'4 120 pounds soak and wet along with very limber and very strong core wise. So I think their speed and agility with more legit claws and spikes could have easily scaled that tree and possibly be on the roof of that building in a matter of a min lol

    I built a set of climbing claws in high school in 1974.

    I own a grappling hook, albeit mine looks very different from yours. I use mine for hiking rather than attempting to climb trees or buildings. It is a helpful tool on steep trails. I can wrap it around a tree trunk and then use the rope to help me climb down the trail. I'll tie the other end of the rope to another tree so that when I go back up to retrieve the hook I still have a rope secured to help me get back down again.
    In a recent hike, I encountered a black bear. I spun the grappling hook over my head to help make myself larger and more intimidating The bear decided it wanted nothing to do with this and ran off, the best possible outcome as neither bear nor myself was injured.
    A grappling hook can be a useful tool as long as you understand that this is NOT Hollywood and you should not be trying to act like Batman. I only use it to help support myself while hiking, not to swing across cliffs or scale 90 degree surfaces.
    Today, after a hike I went into a local bar for some water on my way home and the hook was a conversation starter. They said it was the first time a girl waltzed into their bar with a grappling hook. Occasionally someone will call me a real-life Batman, but I always insist that I'm not, and I don't want people to assume that I am. Because trying to act like a super hero is dangerous. I don't want anyone to try and mimic what they imagine I am doing and hurt themselves. I use my grappling hook as a tool for traversing trails, a device to help give me stability if I need to go over steep or slippery terrain. Or a means of moving branches, logs. etc safely. Not as a means of climbing up cliffs or buildings. I also typically am not "throwing" the hook and climbing. Whenever possible, I manually place the hook to ensure its secured before I start using it for support. If you throw it, you often can't be sure how stable and secure it is. You don't want to be in a situation where the hook comes loose and you fall and get hurt.
    Take it from me, if you use a hook, use it safely and don't try and use it like you see in Hollywood. That's simply not how they are actually meant to be used.

    I'm no expert, but I think it's highly unlikely the foot spikes were used as a weapon. Not something you can equip/unequip quickly. You'd probably be more maneuverable wearing stilettos than those if you tried walking while wearing them. There's also the risk of them piercing or getting stuck in soft flooring like the tatami, and it could make loud scraping sounds on harder surfaces. All this besides looking plain uncomfortable.
    As one commenter below mentioned however, they would be useful if trekking through snow/ice.
    Grappling hook looks like a solid tool though.

    So let me tell you my experiences with those items...not the ones you sell as I bought mine over 30 years go from a local shop.
    Grappling hook. When I tested mine I used it to climb the wall of an abandoned structure. It held my full weight which was 180 lbs at the time, and did not bend nor did the rope break.
    Hand claws. For climbing I found they dug into the backs of my hands when trying to scale a wall, or tree. For fighting the were much more useful whether mounted to the inside of the hand (although they made weapons use almost impossible) or the outside of the hand the were effective weapons themselves.
    Foot spikes. Not much use for climbing but, when I lived in Peoria one winter I found that tying them on to my boots did make walking on the snow and ice much easier (although at some point the weld on one of the spikes came loose leaving me with only three on that particular foot, but that did not hamper their effectiveness for that use.
    As for the Caltrops. When I bought my first ones back in the late 80's they were sold to be used against vehicles, although with the new tire designs that use is no longer feasible, they could be used against someone who is chasing you but with all of the lighting they would be too easy to see, not like the old days where is was dark and the black color would have made them difficult of not impossible to see until it was too late. Never really has an opportunity to use them but, in the modern world and with more modern materials for shoes, I'm not sure they would work even for that. At most they could be effective as a distraction thrown as someone's face.

    I'm a subscriber and I watch weapons Wednesdays all the time, but I think I joined up after this one was uploaded. I honestly always thought that those ninja, climbing accessories Would be interesting to try out. I never had the chance to do it myself so it was cool to see you do it you do it. And I have to say they probably would have worked fairly decently even if they're slightly reminiscent of what they used to be like in ancient Japan. Because the one thing that's very different between you and them is that you're a big strong dude and back then they would have been significantly smaller people so those probably wouldn't worth great in most cases.

    Just picked up one of these grappling hooks for fishing as I'm a big guy and a ninjas gotta eat.
    Oddly I find that there are two ways in which to tighten down the set of grapple horns onto the main eye bolt.
    #1 You drop one horn on, next the corresponding horn, then the spring, then the cap nut.
    #2 Spring first, then the horns🤘, and then the cap nut.
    I've seen both used on other package photos. Which is right?
    Those hand claws are 👌!
    'Yamabushi' or 'Mountain Warriors' / 'Mountain Ninja' / 'Mountain Bush People's' roughly translated, would use those to climb trees, rocks, cliffs, and to scale castle fortress temple walls, roofs and such.
    Replicating certain animals and their natural offensive and defensive weapons in a martial arts has been a forever thing. Claws work with so many Tiger, Mantis, Crane, maybe even 🐒 👀 monkey can do as well to learn.

    Foot spikes work like cleets in soccer u need them to not slip but in any stand-up martial arts with or without weapons in a slippery ground most of the stuff is either useless or weaker the spikes help alot with the issue which would've been common back than were there couldn't control were the fight was at

    I wonder how those claws would do on rocks and walls which are more likely things that ninja would climb. I'm glad that the hook worked I would have bean surprised by it until I actually seen the hook. Then I realized this could actually work. I'm glad it did although you would probably need gloves for the rope.

    • @Karatemart
      @Karatemart  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t imagine them being great on rocks…but possibly on walls. Thanks for watching!

    • @lonknight3197
      @lonknight3197 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually i think ninja would use a smaller more packable grappling hook having to stop and build your hook would have been a no-no for them and that hook already assembled would be very awkward or dangerous to carry --- imagine a hook that size in your pack ready to go and you suddenly see a guard so you dive for cover and the hook stabs you when you hit ground. A smaller 2 prong hook would work alot better you can keep the hook points turned away from your body ,
      I onced rebuilt a grapple hook out of an old garden claw that worked real good.

    I have a feeling the foot spikes would be much more effective in an L-shaped design, where the spikes are on the inside of your leg pointing in, and you stand on the bottom of the L. It appears to me that trying to bend your ankle far enough to make the downward facing spikes useful is awkward at best, and just useful enough to be dangerous (as in, slip when you're 20 feet up) at worst.
