Michael, as an old guy I can tell you this . . . if you play long enough you are going to end up with a bag full of mostly headcovers. It's just the way it is.
I’m 70 and have been playing over 50 years. I’ve got driver, 3, 5, 7 fairways, 5 and 7 hybrids, 7,8,9 Pw, gap and sand wedge and a chipper and they all have head covers!
I went down this rabbit hole and have gone all in on hybrids. My hcp is 1.1. Driver swing speed is 100-104 mph. I currently play them at 19*, 22*, 26*, and 30*. Quite simply they work great for me. I hit more greens from 170 to about 225 than I did with irons. They launch higher, have great descent angles, spin well, and fly straighter. Forgiving on thin shots. I believe they're very much worth testing.
Right there is the issue with golfers……..EGO! Is he at the level of Michelle Wie, NO! She carried an 11W for a large part of her career with the highest iron 6. The pros need to play to pay bills so they put ego out the window, we should too. It has improved my game !
Michael, don't worry about the critics Michael, you are a great young man Buy and build what ever you want. This will always given a reason to get up in the morning
This is quality content. I have literally just gone and bought a 4 hybrid because of this to replace my 4 iron. Lose the ego and improve the stats. Love it.
Captivating watch gents. Fantastic knowledge with great explanation. Who would have thought club fitting could be so interesting? By the way, I never ever get tired of watching Mikey’s swing!
100% AGREE - Dropped 4iron for a 22 (lofted to 23) degree ST-Z hybrid - game changer. 205/210 for me, lands soft, so forgiving and easy to hit. Don't be shy to give it a try people. Play off 6 and it's the best change I've made last year.
I have irons up to 7, then I bag a 26 and 23 degree JPX Fli-Hi hybrid with the same steel shafts as my irons (Nippon 105’s) as true iron replacements. I don’t know why more people don’t do this. And the Fli-HI’s are $137 new!
Couldn’t agree more I had the 6,5&4 jpx fli-hi hybrids in neo950 steel, they were awesome. Had to go with PXG 23 & 19 gen6 hybrid when I upgraded as I got faster and better but also kept the same steel shaft as my new irons, modus120x again love them just don’t seem to be consistent with graphite in my hybrids👍
I’m with you all the way on this comment. I play the fli-hi 4 iron replacement. Absolutely love that club - it’s almost like cheating it’s so easy to hit and gives me a nice high trajectory (as the name suggests) that lands softly on the green. Considering replacing my 5 iron in the same way.
Really cool insight into fairway vs hybrid , i end up using a 38 in 25 degree hybrid for the same reason as Mikey. I struggle with a hybrid 39 in 22 degree or the 41in 7 wood both are close to the same yardage but different flight characteristics. I end up choosing my weapon of that distance for the course , golf is fun…. and all this extra knowledge is awesome guys !
I have a 21* 3 hybrid and 21* 3 iron, that I sometimes play wirh at the same time in the winter...hybrid I can even chip with on mucky lies...versatile...I like clubs to do multiple jobs...cheers, great video...would love to see a course VLOG with the new set up
One of your best fitting videos, although Mikey’s swing speed is higher than most mid- handicappers, I always appreciate when you fit players that the majority can relate to. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Ian for adding at the end that most folks can’t dial in each individual club. I think one of the biggest values your videos add is identifying typical challenges/gaps in our bag, making us think about options, and helping us make fewer bad club purchases. Good stuff, thx
Good story. At 54 I switched from 5 iron to a 2nd hand 5 hybrid with the same loft because of a frozen shoulder initially, but it's so damn predictable I don't want to switch back anymore. Love it. Insightful as well for the CoG delivered loft differences between wood and hybrid, thanks!
These videos have been reading my mind. Exactly the changes I've been making. Added 7w, now testing 5H. I just wish manufacturers would make a sleeker hybrid but in the higher lofts. Those models tend to stop at the 20-22 lofts. I have a TSr2 24.0 but it's a little bulky as a 5i replacement. Hoping I'll get used to it, but would prefer a more iron-like look at that spot in the bag.
I learned something about "lead deflection" today. I was previously assuming that loft was simply loft, between hybrids and fairway woods. Thank you, Ian
This was very informative and so fitting for the general public. You both are more then entertainment value because of the knowledge that you provide and the way that you break it down. Keep doing what you do!
This video was such a great concept. I learned so much about so many different things from a fitting perspective to tech knowledge. So much help to give me ideas from my own bad and gapping issues, and I struggle with hitting my 5 iron. If I remove my 5 iron I feel I a gap issue have in the bag (4 hyb, 5 wood, 3 hyb, no 3 wood as I can hit the 5 wood as far as the 3 wood) where I can see where a 7 wood might be an interesting concept. Thank you all for this one. Cant wait to see what's next.
I went to a bag of FW (3/5/7/9) and Hybrids (6/7) and my scores went from low 90's to high 70's in a matter of weeks. Now I need to get fit for new 8-GW.
Loving these videos, I've changed my set-up from the traditional 3 wood, 5 wood, 4 iron and up to 4 wood, 7 wood, 5 iron and up😊 Gaping is so much better and the decision making for shots is far easier. Shot shaping the 7 wood is fun as well.
Mikey did say something that so many golfers say that causes us problems. "Too many head covers" (11.26). Ego is very difficult to get over especially when age starts to take it's toll.
Tell me about it. I have a original set of Taylormade tour blades from 96-98 when ernie and retief won the us open. I have the set at 2-pw, and man, the 2 iron is not possible to hit higher than 50 feet, even on a good sunday. Still the original rifle shafts too. I still dream of hitting that thing like back in the day.
Pure quality mate. I remember those irons very well they just looked good. Original Rifle shafts wow. Your bag will be a head turner at any club. So cool. @@marcuszettergren8885
The banter between Ian and Mikey is amazing, love the videos guys! Also I really appreciate the explanation of the difference between the Hybrids vs Woods.
I recently dropped 4/5 iron in favour of a Fly-hi driving iron and 4 hybrid after a gapping session with Patrick in the Mississauga store. Made a huge difference!
I've been playing a Stealth 4 hybrid for a year. What I experience is off short grass the ball flight is lower / penetrating. In the 2nd cut or rough the ball flight is much higher and sometimes a 140 yard high pop fly. Hitting balls off an astroturf mat in a studio vs. real grass on the course can be two very different experiences.
Plus 1 handicap player who has always struggled with fairway woods spinning too much, what you explained near the 8,9 min mark makes complete sense I now play an old RBZ 3 hybrid turned down to 17 degree and it goes further than any 3 wood i have tried with much more control due to a shorter shaft What's more, since it's turned down a degree and a half it's playing 3 degrees open which I love because I hate to miss the ball long left and play a pull fade naturally
Revisiting this video after changing my setup to 4w - 7w - 5h - 6h and couldn't be happier about this section of my bag. It's nice knowing that I can hold a green with ease on an approach shot with almost every club in the bag. Now I just need to actually hit the green! 🤣
Great content that is applicable to my game once again even though I’m not close to Mike in either skills or swing speed. As senior golfer of average speed and skills for my age, I find the logic that you used in this video correlates directly to my situation. 7 iron = 150 yds for me and I’ll still can get 170 out of my 5 iron. After that any lower lofted iron doesn’t gap properly to my driver(220). For me I have solved that by going 5 wood, 7 wood, and 9 wood (which are all easier for easier for me to hit out of the rough). I do have to say you all have me thinking now of trying the FW’s all .5 inches shorter😉.
I have been telling Mikey he needed a 7W and 5h for a long time!! I guess that I may have learned a thing or two from watching the channel but n a regular basis for the last 3+ years!
Golf is the worst ego driven sport. As we age, I’m 67 and have realized that ego is just not hitting the ball where I want it to go. I tried a 7 wood and to some degree it helped me keep up. It was a big thing to look to a 9 wood but it just works
The 5 iron Look Good in the Bag match my Set p790. Pw-6 iron.. what good with my 5 iron when it Go'S the same distance of a 6 irons. Had to put the EGO to the side and add another head cover in the GOLF bag!! 5 HY🤗 Is the Mind Over the matter if Webb Simpson can have a 4 HY and a 5 HY in his Golf Bag!! Why not Me!!
I play blades and I quickly realized how much I am penalizing myself by trying to use the long irons as far as height, forgiveness and stopping power. Moving to a 7w to replace my 4i as a 215 carry club, and a higher launching GI iron for the 5i, then go into the blade from 6 down. I could see myself in a 5h if one existed that I didn't hate the look of... :D
Bingo. I took my 5 iron out of the bag on my current iron set and replaced it was a 24 degree hybrid lofted up to 26 degrees. Im going to order my 3rd hybrid at 18 degrees and I have a 21 degree hybrid lofted up to 23. I can hit it 220
I’m curious why no testing of a utility? Something like a Srixon ZX or similar that has that low CG might help with launch similar to the hybrid but be more consistent. I would personally be concerned of having a 200 yd club that spins 4100. That’s a recipe for not only inability to hold a green but generally dispersion increases as spin reduces. My 200 yd club I need to know I can consistently hit within a fairly tight circle as long as I’m swinging good. I get very frustrated when I make a really solid move on a ball from fairway and I see a low spin flier sailing 10 yds long as a result. I tend to avoid hybrids and especially fw for simple reason I’m far less adept at shaping shots with them. Because my clubs are more traditional lofts, my 4 iron is 25*, closer it seems to what you’re replacing w/hybrid, I spin mine about 4800 average. I then carry a 22.5* Srixon U84 and 20* U84. The only issue I have is the soles are labeled 4 & 3, respectively thus I carry 2 irons w/4 iron markings but by placing the utility clubs in my bag where fw are intended, I’ve never accidentally grabbed the wrong 4-iron….i did have a caddy do so in Scotland but I noticed it immediately 🤣🤣
I’ve been using a sim max 9 wood with an x stiff shaft in it for the last 2 years, safe to say it out performs any of my other clubs in the bag, she my old faithful
Great video! I would rather hit a thin 5 iron than game a hybrid…… Lol…. I call them go lefts!!! All kidding aside, I’m currently going down that road to “learn” how to hit hybrids because I do believe they are a useful utility club to have in the bag! Hoping to hit them as good as you Mikey! Great job as always fellas!
Hey, I am over 60 years old and I now have a 5 iron and 2 hybrids 20 deg and 23 deg. This now is required to fill the large gap between the 5 iron (160-165) and the 3 wood (190-200)!
Been golfing a year and one of the best things I did was get rid of my 5 iron for a 5 hybrid , when’s it’s good it’s on the green and when it’s bad it’s down there somewhere. The 5 iron was just bad unless hitting a hooky recover shot from under trees then I’d flush it 200 yards dead straight 🤦♂️😂
I'm still debating on 9 wood or 5 hybrid 1 degree strong. Lot's of hight on the 9 wood but can get caught in the wind. Not really getting on with 4 hybrid - too many miss hits.I don't carry a 3 wood so I can keep the 5 iron in the bag or carry both the 5 wood and 9 wood if I expect a lot of shots at that distance.
I play 2 degrees flat irons cause I’m short and come from the inside. I hook normal upright hybrids but those flight characteristics would fit perfect between my 4 iron (210) and 3 wood (250) is there a hybrid I should try? I think ping 3 hybrid 1 flat and 1 lower loft as like an anti left hybrid what you think?
Ha. I just took my 7 wood out of the bag for a 4 hybrid. Loved my 7 wood, but the ball just flew too high and probably lost 5-8 yards to height. That excessive height in windy Florida is not good. 4 hybrid probably 20 feet lower and added 5-6 yards over the 7 wood.
Love this series rebuilding the long end of Mikey's bag. What's he playing between his 3 wood and his 7 wood? I know in the past he's talked about a TSR 5 wood in that slot -- is that still the case? Or with the 7 wood going 215, does he not even need that 5 wood anymore?
@@mikemartysiewicz Awesome, guess that frees up a club, too, right? Since as Ian framed it, the 7W replaced 4 iron and 4H replaced T200 5 iron? What’s the new 14th club in the bag?
Interesting I'm a high swing speed player and have been thinking about this. Hit my zx7 6 iron 205 carry. 5 iron is 215 but way lower than I'd like. Love my g430 4 hybrid, it's an easy and consistent 235 carry and think maybe a g430 5 hybrid would fill the 220 yardage im trying to get with much better height to hold greens
I have a real problem with this par of the bag. Decent ball striker with pretty neutral path delivery (slightly out to in), approx 100mph with the driver. 4 iron carries around 195/200 with a good hit and then 3 wood carries around 225/230. The gap is the problem, I was fitted indoors at a really good fitter for a hybrid but when I got on the course it was a disaster and very inconsistent. Currently trialing a U505 2 iron which is going really well distance and accuracy wise but I'd like a higher launch option for a couple of specific courses I play. Any recomendations Ian/Mikey?
The problem with taking out all of the long irons is that when you need to hit a low punch shot under overhanging tree limbs you don’t have a club anymore for that shot. The top of my bag currently is 8 degree driver, 13 degree 3 wood, 16.5 degree 4 wood, 21 degree 7 wood, 24 degree 5 hybrid, 26 degree 5 iron.
VA Slay is a great shaft for the hybrid I put it mine and currently in my 4 wood. Even better when you pull it out the bag and let the dragons smoke lol
Interesting, I thought the 7 wood and 4 hybrid were roughly equivalent with difference being mainly in ball flight/height. I really like my 5-hybrid and 7-wood, going to give a 4-hybrid a try. Thank you.
Is Mikey's new hybrid a 4H or 5H? Reason for asking is a ST230 4H stock length is 40". So at 39" that is a full inch short. How did the swing weight come out? Any adjustments made to account for shorter length?
I think Wood numbers vs. lofts have gone the opposite way of irons. That Ping “7” or “9” especially turned down is a lot more like a 5/6 or 6/7. Maybe they are taking the dynamic loft via CG location into account?
Michael, as an old guy I can tell you this . . . if you play long enough you are going to end up with a bag full of mostly headcovers. It's just the way it is.
😂 true! All that matters is playing your best golf!
😂😂😂 Facts. As soon as I order my next Hybrid i will be up to 4 Headcovers😂

I’m 70 and have been playing over 50 years. I’ve got driver, 3, 5, 7 fairways, 5 and 7 hybrids, 7,8,9 Pw, gap and sand wedge and a chipper and they all have head covers!
That detailed explanation at around 9 minutes around the CG was amazing and what makes this channel great
Agree, I thought I knew a lot about golf equipment, but it seems I'm still learning.
That kind of info is the reason I watch every video. You never know what gems are going to be in there.
I wish I had an “Ian” to put that much time and knowledge into my game! Great perspective.
I wish Ian was my physics teacher. I might have listened a lot more.
What a Wonderful Life..."every time someone gets a club fitting an angel gets its wings".
Ha ha…my perfect 200 yard club is my driver. Greetings from Down-Under.
The 22-25° bag slot is one of the trickiest in all of golf. Cool to see the dramatic differences between the 9w and 4h.

How do they play out of thick rough versus an iron
@@erichanson2772 More clubhead to get caught in grass, but if you get club on the ball there is more pop and ball speed. I find they work well.
That's exactly what I did. It lowered my score. Everyone should have at least 1 hybrid in their bag.
Totally agree. I hit the Titleist TSR2 21 Degree 4H so well I ordered the 21 Degree TSR2, and soon am ordering the TSR2 18 Degree Hybrid

I ditched most of the mid irons too! As a 52 year old, 4 handicap, I have 4 hybrids so I don’t hit an iron on any shot over 160 yards.
Fell in love with an old 27 degree Wilson fybrid and have stopped at 7 ever since.
I’ve been using a sim max 9 wood with an x stiff shaft in it for the last 2 years, safe to say it out performs any of my other clubs in the bag, she my old faithful
I can hit a 4 hybrid great but when I try a 5 hybrid to replace 5 iron I start blocking it right. Maybe it’s the shorter length?
Great video! I would rather hit a thin 5 iron than game a hybrid…… Lol…. I call them go lefts!!! All kidding aside, I’m currently going down that road to “learn” how to hit hybrids because I do believe they are a useful utility club to have in the bag! Hoping to hit them as good as you Mikey! Great job as always fellas!
Hey, I am over 60 years old and I now have a 5 iron and 2 hybrids 20 deg and 23 deg. This now is required to fill the large gap between the 5 iron (160-165) and the 3 wood (190-200)!
Ivan I playing with my 3 hybrid to my 6 hybrid. I can control my distance better.
That is what I am doing as well.
Love the bants 😊
When do we see his new what’s in the bag and gapping
Yep that was my experience as well
Brilliant content
I love my Mizuno CLK 3 4 5 hybrids. They are adjustable. Great for 70 year old.
3 wood then 7 wood as 7 wood goes higher than 5 wood and close to same distance
@@mikemartysiewicz Awesome, guess that frees up a club, too, right? Since as Ian framed it, the 7W replaced 4 iron and 4H replaced T200 5 iron? What’s the new 14th club in the bag?
I started taking lessons. I went with a 5 wood and a 4 hybrid. Couldn’t hit the 3/4.
I have dropped my 5 iron to a 23/24’ hybrid. Handicap has dropped from 5 to 3. It’s a pure game changer.
This is where I feel I'm going to have to start letting go of ego. Gapping my clubs showed me that my carry distances flat line at my 5 iron.
Nice
210 approach on a par 5 looks tasty with how I hit my Mizuno stz-230 4-hybrid. It's a great club.
Any recomendations Ian/Mikey?
does his 6i fly 185y or we are seeing another video next week?
The problem with taking out all of the long irons is that when you need to hit a low punch shot under overhanging tree limbs you don’t have a club anymore for that shot.
The top of my bag currently is 8 degree driver, 13 degree 3 wood, 16.5 degree 4 wood, 21 degree 7 wood, 24 degree 5 hybrid, 26 degree 5 iron.
VA Slay is a great shaft for the hybrid I put it mine and currently in my 4 wood. Even better when you pull it out the bag and let the dragons smoke lol
I play a cobra radspeed one length 5 hybrid. It replaced my 5 iron. It's my 170meter carry club, so easy.
Never got on with my current hybrids, picked up a Cobra Speedzone 7-9 wood and hit more consistently then my RBZ 5 iron
Interesting, I thought the 7 wood and 4 hybrid were roughly equivalent with difference being mainly in ball flight/height. I really like my 5-hybrid and 7-wood, going to give a 4-hybrid a try. Thank you.
I've got 6-PW. Have a 5h at 26* which for me flies around 185-190. My 6 flies 170-175. Then I go to 9w at 200 carry.
Yep my next iron set is gonna be 6-GW
THE BEST THING I EVER DID IN GOLF....Get rid of the 5 iron and get a 5 hybrid! So much easier to hit! For reference im a 4.2 handicap!!!
Yep I did that as well
Let it go Mike…Father Time is undefeated
Is Mikey's new hybrid a 4H or 5H? Reason for asking is a ST230 4H stock length is 40". So at 39" that is a full inch short. How did the swing weight come out? Any adjustments made to account for shorter length?
22° 4hyb at 39”
Play my 7w at 41”
Now that you are using the 22 degree to replace your 5 I, what is the degree of your 6-9 irons? Thanks
I think Wood numbers vs. lofts have gone the opposite way of irons. That Ping “7” or “9” especially turned down is a lot more like a 5/6 or 6/7. Maybe they are taking the dynamic loft via CG location into account?
Sahith theegala has a ping 9 wood
I haven't carried a 5 iron in years. My 5 goes 200 on the dot and the hybrids crush an iron on dispersion by large margin
Why don’t you try t350 in 6i?
I like the idea of a 7 wood but I just can’t trade out the hybrid.
Game changer
@@mikemartysiewicz I don’t dislike the 7 wood at all. For me the hybrid just hits the number I need and performs better.
I have a weird bag driver, 3 wood, 7 wood, 4;5,6 hybrid and 7-S irons
I'm a 6 index...put a 9w Sim with a stiff Kuro Kage in the bag...190 in the air. can shape it. easy to hit. 5 iron....not so much.
Nice
Dropped 3 &4 but need 5 to hit under those limbs by playing back in the stance.
