    150 grit seems a bit aggressive. Leaves gouges. A 320 sanding sponge seems to work better for me.

    • @datmeme8967

      Not really a problem if you're applying 12 coats of paint.

    • @ChristopherJones16

      The 4 coats of primer alone will fill in the scratches.

    • @TangoCharlieAlpha
      @TangoCharlieAlpha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristopherJones16 It just means more work....and more material. So, why??

    • @ChristopherJones16
      @ChristopherJones16 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TangoCharlieAlpha me personally would use 320 but if all I had was 150 I wouldn’t worry too much about the scratches showing with 4 coats of primer and 4 coats of paint. I think 320 is what most painters use when they paint aluminum. Probably not extra work for someone though if they just use 150 and nothing else. His legs seem to have came out fine using it. Then again perhaps that’s why he needed 4 coats of primer. I’m not painter. I usually stick with two coats of primer. For most things I paint. Sometimes just one coat depending on the object. If that’s the case then yeah 150 will need to be followed up with less coarse sandpaper. To each their own.

    I did a test on an aluminum pop can with 2 coats of Rustoleum Self Etching Primer and 2 coats of Rustoleum Semi-gloss black and then 2 coats of Semigloss clear. I didn’t sand though before priming. Later that night I did a scratch test with my fingernail. It scratched off to bare metal easily. I let it sit over night and tried another scratch test mid day. Still coming off although a little less easily. This is disheartening. The nature of the piece I need to actually paint has hundreds of ridges on it that would take me a week to sand.

I live in an area where it snows a lot and I want to try to make them last longer the company I bought them from says they don't have issues with corrosion but I feel as though if I primer and paint them it would be much better protection then just the bare aluminum that is currently on them on the underside any kind of help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated thank you

    • @johnbobbitt6470
      @johnbobbitt6470 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’d go with a 400, then step it up to 600 and then 800. Rostoleum makes a variety pack of automotive sandpaper you can find in Walmart that has all the grits you’ll need for like $4. If you still see some after the etching primer, hit it with a coat of regular primer or “high build”. But that’ll likely be unnecessary.
      I’m always a fan of just the 800, but put the object (assuming it’s xirculr and symmetrical) in a drill and spin the hell out of it. Sand it that way.

      Cheap mask should be OK, as long as you're in well ventilated area. May I ask, Trim for what exactly? If it's something that's going to get wet or collect condensation on the surface, the top coat of paint will eventually chip and peel off over time. This is why retail bathroom fixture and plumbing manufacturers finish their products with a plated surfaces or powder coating.

    Hi Bill, wonder if you can help me. I'm getting flat faced machined 6063 parts with a high gloss machined finish - I would like to achieve consistent satin/matte (or the finish you have on your part). I need to do a little deburring on occasion but the toolpaths are so tight that the finish looks great but much too gloss. I tried spraying a matte clear laquer then gloss, then matte but found out the hard way that you need to unlock/rough the surface to allow bonding etc. Is your 6061 finished piece anodised? looks like it's been sanded with about 400-600 grit but its hard to tell from my novice eyes. I'm at the point now where I think I'm going to try some ultra fine scotchbrite pads etc. but any cheap tips would be great, I don't really want to add vapourblasting costs on top at this stage till I sell a few lol
