Not only am I a fan the the movie 101 Dalmatians but I am a bigger fan of the breed that inspired the movie.
I was able to catch up with Stacy Henderson Foster at a recent AKC Confirmation show. Her dog Fancy, won the Breed that day and it is no wonder why she is absolutely beautiful. In this video I sit down with Eleanor Green Winters, who produced Fancy and she tells me all about the Dalmatian breed.
The Dalmatian’s delightful, eye-catching spots of black or liver adorn one of the most distinctive coats in the animal kingdom. Beneath the spots is a graceful, elegantly proportioned trotting dog standing between 19 and 23 inches at the shoulder. Dals are muscular, built to go the distance; the powerful hindquarters provide the drive behind the smooth, effortless gait.
The Dal was originally bred to guard horses and coaches, and some of the old protective instinct remains. Reserved and dignified, Dals can be aloof with strangers and are dependable watchdogs. With their preferred humans, Dals are bright, loyal, and loving house dogs. They are strong, active athletes with great stamina-a wonderful partner for runners and hikers.

I was going to get a Dalmatian but then I honestly thought of my lifestyle, we wouldn’t be compatible so I did more research. I found a couple of breeds that matched my needs perfectly , one of them is a Saint Beranrd. He fits my lifestyle great, I can take him for a walk around the neighborhood for about 30 minuets and he does great, I can also stay inside and he doesn’t mind that either. So please people think about if the dog fits into your lifestyle NOW, please don’t say I’m getting him to be more active because if you’re not active now a dog isn’t going to change that they are just going to annoy you. Before you get a very active breed make sure you are dedicated to exercising even without them there.

People also don't realize when there dog "acts up" in the house, it probably means that there dog is bored and has a lot of energy. Usually this happens to familys or owners who do not take there dog out or give them proper exercise. For some dogs taking a walk is all they need, but for some dogs, they actually have to run.

My husband and I had a rescue Dalmatian/Boxer female, poor girl had a rough street life and passed around from owner to owner, more anxiety and aggression towards dogs with each change until we took her in. She became attached to our mastiff mix after 6 months of gradual introduction and never turned back. Overcame her fear of doorways and stairs, and her dysplasia reversed after getting her in good shape and active. Sadly she passed this year at 13 years old, but died at home with her family at her bedside. The dalmatian in her was sassy and smart, absolutely an amazing dog. So resilient.

We just adopted 2 dalmatians who were surrendered to the Dogs Trust. Quickly realised they need a lot of exercise, but they are adorable. Brother and sister, 10 years old. It's getting my 2 teens out of the house, on walks, talking and they are so friendly and loving and interested in what is going on too. We can't believe how anybody could have them for 10 years and then give them up! But we're thankful every day that we can give them their forever home.

I have had 2 dals and they are the softest dog in the world but they shed 24/7, 365 days a year or twice a year for 6 months at a time. If you don’t mind vacuuming every day then you will love them. Notice how attentive they are. That is because they are the most food-motivated dog there is; so they are easy to train if you use treats.

Pros of Dalmatians (from a Dalmatian owner):
    - beautiful
    - extremely affectionate and devoted to owners and family
    - playful and athletic (great running partner)
    - funny habits like sneezing when excited, smiling, being “talkative”, and big squeaky yawns
    - groom themselves and don’t have a doggy odor
    - good watchdogs and naturally distinguish friend from stranger
    Cons:
    - constantly shedding little white hairs that get stuck in clothing and everything else so you will always need a lint roller
    - some are deaf or have temperament issues so selecting the right dog is critical
    - need a lot of exercise
    - prone to separation anxiety
    - prone to certain health issues (bladder stones, epilepsy)
    - trainable but will only listen to you if they want to

I adopted a Dalmatian a year ago, she’s 3, she was a rescue and she’s probably not pure breed, but it doesn’t matter, to me she’s the most loving and amazing dog I’ve ever had, she is playful when we go out but still a couch potato to watch movies with me afterwards, tho getting a Dalmatian does make you become a very active person if you weren’t already, I take her out at least for two walks of around an hour to hour and a half a day, and she can stand being active for a long long period of time and she’s honestly made me a better person.

It is very important to understand that these dogs were originally used for coach dogs and served I very particular role that has been left out in there history intentionally. A coach dog did not simply run under or near or in front of a moving coach becouse it liked running or had an affinity for horses. These dogs were trained to clear the path for coach drawn people in cities as well as guard the horses pulling the coach. This was the Dalmatians JOB. the Dalmatians did this to great effect. When you saw the white spotted dog you cleared a path or else you got bit by the dog. The dogs job was to keep you from getting ran over. So it was get out of the way or get ran over you see. The Dalmatian protected the horses from being baited by other dogs as the horse drawn carriage be it private or government was traveling to its destination. This was the Dalmatians purpose.

Yes, they were trained to use there mouths as a form of regular communication in there work. Obviously you have true experience with the original form and temperament of the breed. I'm sure most lines sharp and keen demeanors have been breed down more and more as the years have past but said carictoristics can still come out in any dog. Personally I prefer a dog that is quicker to give a warning bite in a situation as aposed to dealing with the scenario tell they lash out or panic as many dogs do. I currently have working dogs that are part Dalmatian and they are very mouthy and territorial animals by nature. Not trained, it is part of them as you mentioned. It is rare to find people that are like minded in that some dog breeds are designed to be very assertive and effective in there work.

I had a dalmatian for about 14 years. He was a perfect friend and was a great guard dog as well, he would only use his serious bark and stance at strangers. He was the sweetest angel and even let kids pet him when we took him to events. He was super smart too, learned quickly and agile, he loved to play. I'll never forget him, he took a piece of my heart when he left.

We got a 5 year old dalmatian from a shelter. He's originally from spain and was surrendered there because the owner lost interest in him. He was kept in the garden for 4 years without much exercise. He was very insecure and didn't have a lot of experience (he copied most of our 11 year old sheperd mix behavior)
Dalmatians are such a sweet and human orientated breed. They love to cuddle and love getting affection so much. I definitely fell in love with the breed

I first got a Dalmatian in January 1990. Indigo was born December 4, 1989. I got her at 8 weeks old. She had no spots on her! I actually got to witness her well marked spots coming in! Indigo was beautiful! I named her Indigo because of her Blue/Indigo eyes that looked like glass when the Sun hit them! Indigo was also deaf. I had to do Sign Language with her!
I lost my precious PUP in August 2001! I miss that little bad girl so much! LOL 😂!

Daisy is a liver spotted Dal and came into my life in May 2023 as a beautiful, sily eared free to good home dog. I mean, who cares about the shedding? So you have to vacuum the floor and brush your black clothes? Such a small issue compared to the absolute joy this 4.5 year old sweetheart has given me. We didn't like cats at first but it was no trouble to train them all to get along. Now one of them sleeps curled up with Daisy. And run? She's amazing. Luckily I have my horses agisted at a golf driving range so after the golfers have gone she gets to run free. Yes, we still have to learn not to eat horse poo and to come back to me when called (it's soon snake season so the red belly blacks will be out and I do not want Daisy to meet one). So yesterday I bought a whistle and she responds instantly to that so the real training begins tomorrow.
Enough, I could write about her forever ❤.

  • @IckelLorns

Quite possibly the most accurate video I've ever seen about our beautiful breed. They are incredible dogs, but high maintenance in the sense that if you don't give them enough exercise/mental stimulation then they let you know about it - they won't be satisfied with a quick on-lead walk around the block! They're also velcro dogs - so if you don't want a dog that wants to be around you a lot, then they're not for you. If you don't work from home then you should definitely look into daycare for when you're at work too as they don't enjoy being left for long periods. They are also vocal, so if your neighbours will complain then they're not the breed for you. Part of their role as carriage dogs was to guard the horses in the stables, so they do tend to get territorial and bark to "warn" you if someone is near the house. I'm yet to meet an aggressive one, but without proper socialisation (as with all dogs) you will find them very challenging. For those who are active & love to have a best friend in their dog, then they're a wonderful breed. Take extra care with feeding as purines cause severely painful stones to form & I strongly recommend you get pet insurance as taking care of a stone-forming Dalmatian can be extremely expensive!

Dalmatians are misunderstood because they have a very rambunctious puppy stage that lasts 2-2.5 years, and many people give up on them before they get past this. They mellow out a lot once they mature.

Sandiven 190399 i have 2 dobermans and 3 malinois .. all are schutzund ipo 3 ... i think I’m a pretty good and experienced owner ... my dogs get a proper raw feed 80%meat 10%organ 10%bone diet and have never had any complaints from the vet for the past 6 years .... I definitely know what I’m talking about

I definitely know what I’m talking about... i got a dalmation from the best lines from Germany.... had 3 of them ... inspite of proper exercise training and socialising, i found them destroying stuff behaving aggressively and just not obediently listening type of breed... now they can be called dumb or arrogant or rebellious or way too stubborn... mind you i never hit my dogs except a firm pat for something really bad they’ve done ... i ended up returning them back to the breeder.. who said that these are the true traits of the breed... i asked alot of other breeders too and they agreed as well ... these breeders have there entire family from generations into this breed and they know what they’re saying... the particular breeder i bought from is the 4th generation after his father etc

Best dog I have ever owned! The one I have now, pictured when he was a pup, is 8 years old and going strong. He is my third and will be very hard to replace, when the time comes. This is one of the best videos I have watched. She is, pardon the pun, spot on!

    Question.
Where does English bulodg come from?
Where does the German Shepherd come from?
Where does the Great Dane come from?
Where does the Irish Setter come from?
Where does the French Bulldog come from?
And finally, tell me - where does a Dalmatian come from?
    Thanks and greetings from Istria!!
    👋👋
P.s. I have a Dalmatian girl, Nola, a year and a half old. She is very lively, on the move all day, the most beautiful dog by far. And I adore her.

Dolly is my third Dalmatian. Domino was my first a black and white spotted sadly lost her at 9 years old. Then I had Amber a liver and white spotted female. Sadly lost her last year to a brain liason at 14 years old. I now have Dolly a liver spotted female who is just 5 months old and full of life. She loves a run round the park. Everything is done at a run she is so full of energy and very fun loving. Can be a bit full on after having the elder Dalmatian she is always ready for a walk. Wonderful with kids so very good natured.

So I have had Ridgebacks my whole life, so when my old girl passed away I decided to get a delmation. An I found that the similarities between my Ridgies and Spots was ridiculous. Which makes me wonder why they are not categorized in the hound category? Besides that the only real down fall I had with mine was his sensitivity to the Sun, which my Ridgies never had a problem with.

My grandma had a Dalmation. Sadly she couldn't care for him correctly. She was fairly old when she got him and couldn't keep up with his physical needs. He became anxious and began licking his paws excessively and always had a horrible sore on one of his paw. This is a demanding dog, not for everyone.

I'm here because I missed my dalmatians & wanting to know if the smile is either bred out of existence or a rare habit. Still can't find answers from this vid yet, but a great coverage. I kind of wish the Dalmatian boom returns, the dog is 6 figures in my country at the moment & there is NO WAY I could afford it.
