Galactic Republic ATF: Why do you need a giant missile platform with wheels?
IGBC: “Tis for hunting.”
"Debt collection."
hello sir this is your bank here to collect your debt we brought a moving missile platform to convince you to pay up
To make a massive ammo rack target
To be fair, there's a fair bit of megafauna in the GFFA, especially in Legends (though some should still exist in Disney-canon, and were seen in e.g. The Mandalorian). Sure, you don't need a Hailfire to hunt a wild rancor, but krayt dragons are pretty dangerous, and there are a range of others. In short, the hunting excuse is unnervingly plausible.
IGBC: "It's a medicinal MLRS"
A giant missile rack on wheels? Sounds cool as hell
I see what you did there
True
Didn't the allies make a weapon like that during WW2 to go on water?
@@dustybunny6716 not just on landing crafts, there were middle racks on Shermans called T34 Calliope
Yeah, you can probably call it HIHOTH or something like that.
Always loved the Hailfire. Shame we never saw more of it.
Same here
@@michaelandreipalon359it did?
@@michaelandreipalon359 not really, no real reason why it couldn't be made sensibly economic, at worst change the wheels to be smaller and more compact, likely needing you to make them shaped more like traditional tracks, then take the droid brain and make it dumb as nails but the missile guidance means most time it'll hit the target
@@calebbarnhouse496en doesn’t really make sense. In longer engagements it would be useless. Maybe in small numbers to punch a hole in defenses. But my guess is that TCW animators realized it would look awkward in battle in the show and decided to not waste time and money modeling it.
@calebbarnhouse496
The problem is that once it used the rockets, it could barely do anything else. If you programmed it to return to base to refuel, you just lead the enemy to your supply depo. So, any battle would be near pointless to deploy to.
I kind of jived with the hailfire. Had the toy as a kid and everything. Something really fun about zooming about firing copious amounts of rockets.
Nostalgia, is not what it used to be.😊
I still like Spy Kids😅. And Transformers 1984 is.........interesting
In actuality this thing can almost turn on a dime in a similiar way to what a tank does, either brake on one wheel while the other continues or spin them both in opposite directions to turn in place, its a powerful and fast anti tank and anti air droid that is cheap enough to build that u can easily justify one way trips
Came here to comment this 👌 it's called neutral steering.
One neat thing about the hailfire is that there’s apparently another droid that can fly in and replace the missile racks once they run out of ammo. Don’t remember where I heard it from though.
Even easier? Wait for the recharge timer on the missiles to finish the cooldown.
I remember hearing that too.
Yes, the Refresh Droid I believe.
The Hailfire droids were actually retired from the battlefield early on in the war until nearly the end, when the IGBC worked out how to reload them _in situ_ .
Personally, I'd have just ripped the Hailfire missiles off of the Hailfire droids and bolted them onto something else, like the AAT.
AATs have missile tubes on the front skirt, but like the missiles on the LAATs don't see much screentime.
The missle packs design has me thinking it's main advantage would be a quick reload. They would speed out onto the battlefield, launch their missiles, then return to base for their reload. Like a race car making multiple pit stops during a race.
The two wheels mean it has a turn radius of 0. Turn one wheel in one direction and the other wheel the other way. Can't move laterally, but it can turn in place.
To the contrary, if it has room to maneuver, I bet the thing could rotate on a dime, if programmed to do so.
All you would have to do is lock up one wheel, and spin the other. Considering its acceleration, it could probably do a 90* in less than a second.
Great vid as always Eck!
It looked and felt terrifying. Droid brain. Speed. Missile spam. Heavy guides missiles and heavy laser. Gives the same vybe of Hyena bombers. Screaming death. Bane of infantry and armour. And given its speed I could see these making a few runs to quickly resupply. And if it can traverse like the OG BF2 then turning abruptly like a tank shouldn't be a problem.
As a kid the Hailfire was my favorite star wars vehicle. The idea of something that zooms around and saturates a whole area with purple missiles was awesome.
So it would depend on the commander using it, I see it as a fast moving long range artillery that can turn on a dime that’s really useful as quite often Artillery tends to be quite slow and cumbersome meaning it can be located and counterattacked with a high likelihood of it been damaged or destroyed, it’s speed and mobility are a real accent to a good commander.
HIMARS activity
Kinda surprised it wasn't used more, it's a good long range artillery platform.
Would've been good if they could also be used like real world missile trucks, massed formations saturating a battlefield before moving fast out the way of return bombardments. I'm sceptical of the ability of their wheels to handle muddy terrain, but everything struggles with mud.
I love the hailfire. Its just a rocket launhcer on wheels. I dont see any problems and that's why i love it
Exposed ammo rack
Man, you are hitting all my favorite maps of the OG Battlefront games!
I always thought this vehicle was really cool, but after you described it in more detail, it sounds like the Russian TOS-1A. It fires 24 thermobaric rockets, but it has a short firing range so they are often easily destroyed in a giant spectacle. If an unmanned vehicle like that could move around quickly, it would have more use.
I imagine with its side by side wheels it would actually work pretty well even in tight spaces as it should be able to turn 180 on the spot like a tank by just reversing one of its wheels.
I had a toy of this right after Attack of the Clones came out, it had a little booklet with a short story that portrayed the Hailfire a bit differently. Yoda was rescuing a wounded clone trooper that was hiding from one of these, and they were portrayed as more of a dangerous hunter, able to use its payload to set up obstacles and traps; the blaster cannon isn't good for much better than self-defense, but was lethal against soft targets. IIRC, Yoda had to distract it by moving a huge chunk of rubble to distract it before coming up and destroying it up-close.
The hellfire was great only problem was reloading the missile racks as it was limited to 30
🤔 . . . I guess that is highly dependent on what the Intergalactic Banking Clans’ other droid units were to help determine if it was good to begin with or not. Thus, much like the Mining Guilds’ two Spider Droids, what was the other Intergalactic Banking Clans’ droids they’ve fielded on Geonosis?
I always considered the body weird, even though it's one of my favorite droids admittedly, I always thought it could fly with those giant wheels like in sonic, the hedgehog The movie with doctor eggman that helicopter without the blades. I figured those wheels could maybe do the same thing
A super fast mobile missile launcher droid is super badass! Love this speedy death machine!
Loving this short video format tho. Keep it up.🎉
Edit: Is that a mod for the OG BF2 as I'm seeing Rebels v Driods?
Yeah, it's the cross era battles mod on the nexus for it. It's pretty cool
@@MarMarBunbun Ah thanks good stuff. I've been meaning to reinstall BF2 for a bit. Wonder if split screen still works on pc. Sure ai got it to work with controllers before.
The Hailfire droid reminds me of a Vehicle out of Twisted Metal. Specifically Axel 😂
Wasn't there actually a Star Wars game that was basically Twisted Metal?
Turns out there was. It was called Star Wars: Demolition, came out in late 2000, and was based off of Vigilante 8. And sadly, I only remember it because of JonTron.
I know you don't do versus so much anymore, but I'd really like to see a versus between an AT-ST and a Republic Fighter Tank.
I liked the video, by the way; I always thought the Hailfire Droid would be downright terrifying if it was on a high-mobility platform like a Saber Tank instead of those massive wheels.
I was really hoping you'd talk about the short story where a Hailfire droid actually had Yoda cornered in a 1v1 scenario, and he had to form a plan and retreat in order to defeat it.
Like the content, it’s like a renaissance of the old versus days. Keep it up!
Personally I would not change a thing about the hailfire droid: it’s massive wheels are goofy as hell and I love that. But in lore they are given the respect they deserve: they are specialize hardware that has few applications but when applied work extremely well, as shown in the battle for geanosis or munalist. I do wish we had gotten a version from the clone wars tv series before it ended (if there was one I missed it), but they did a lot more surgical strikes so it makes sense why the rush down droid wasn’t there.
As a kid I would endlessly watch the scene in Episode 2 when the Hailfires comes in. The sound of their missiles being fired, those missiles being purple and leaving black trails in the sky.. it just sounded and looked so damn cool.
One of my favourite land vehicles in 2005 Battlefront II. It's so fun spamming the hailfire missiles.
Damn dude, so close to that 1 million! Can't wait til you finally hit it, you've been working hard at this for a good amount of years now and I'd say you're definitely earned and deserve it! I'll be there with the congrats soon Justin, keep up the amazing work.
There is nothing stopping it from being able to turn very rapidly. One wheel forward, one wheel backwards.
This has always been one of my favorite designs. It really seems like it works well within the pattern of cheap, numerous, and unintelligent weapons that are better for overwhelming an opponent rather than relying on complex strategy.
Wheels allow it to constantly touch the ground which seems to be what you need to get through a shielded area. I recall seeing something saying that large ground based shields can block repulsor vehicles, hence the increased use of walkers on planetary ground assaults.
Its a brilliant, inexpensive but deadly distraction that is capable enough to be a priority target but cheap enough to be something you can throw away
This droid has a small silhouette from almost every angle. Repulsorcraft tend to have large outlines from above making them easier to target from the air.
"because I absolutely thrive off praise" amen brother
I always liked them and thought of them as fire support or for ambush tactics. Quick hit and run missions of a group racing onto a battlefield just to unload a barrage of death, then return to base to rearm. Similar to grad rockets of modern conflict but closer range and guided for greater accuracy and on a more mobil platform. Can't imagine it not being able to neutral turn or pivot turn on its axis, so it should be able to turn on a dime.
I just yesterday finished a Thrawn's Revenge campaign as the Corporate Sector Authority and the hailfires had become a pretty constant part of my ground combat composition just because of the sheer damage output. I even had a couple of scenes where I managed to sneak up on an AT-AT from behind and bring it down with a squad of these before it managed to turn around. Of course, I also lost them quite quickly when the enemies wised up on their damage potential and ignored my hover tanks and B1s in order to take them out first. So the hit and run tactic is really emphasized because they are just far too squishy and short-ranged to use them as a standoff-artillery behind your lines.
Decreased cost is the first thing i thought of when you mentioned the wheels.
Anyone who was on the receiving end of a Battletech SRM-carrier KNOWS how dangerous missile platforms can be. The havoc they can cause when being mass-produced and just let loose is terrifying. Also, the Hailfire can turn much easier than you'd think, just have the speed of each wheel's rotation be regulated separately. It could turn on a DIME.
Btw the wheels were serrated, in the video game “The Clone Wars”. In multiplayer you could play as the hailfire droid and if you press forward and run into another player they will slowly take damage. If you boost into another player, you could one shot them.
I do like the look of the Hailfire. I've easily imagine something like that made similarly for the good guys, like the Rebel Alliance; it would be easy to adjust that droid "head" into a cockpit ideal for a hotshot pilot, and given its advantage in speed and hit-and-run, a specialty of the Rebels, albeit with more offensive blasters. It's like putting a missile rack on a pickup or speedy car. Plus, if a pilot was inside the cockpit of the module replacing the droid brain, at least a pilot would have more control rather than a droid with a pre-programmed route.
@06:53 On the contrary... That thing will be _really_ fast when it comes to turning regardless of how small the turn is.
I’ve watched your SW content for years, and recently started watching your NHL videos on Eck.
For the entirety of this video, I’ve expected a sudden shift to the Republic’s first round draft pick Anakin Skywalker, or the CIS putting Dooku on the injured reserve… help lol
You showed so much battlefront 2 (2005) gameplay, even saying you are doing this because theres not many official images or artwork for the thing, and yet none of that gameplay included any footage of the hailfire droid. Its a fully playable vehicle in that game, as well as in the 2004 battlefront
I don't know maybe it's the fact i had a lego droid set that had a Hailfire Droid in it when I was a kid but I Like the Hailfire Droid due to its unique appearance and the fact it looks like something id make as a kid.
I could see using it in a similar fashion to cavalry, sweeping in at high speed from the flanks.
Whenever I try to think critically about the hailfire wheels, I always come back to target profile. If you accept this thing's size as a nececity to transport its payload, the wheels start to make sense for reducing its target size. A hailfire is viewed from any direction is mostly empty space. Large gaps between the main body and its wheels. Thin struts, and the wheels are mostly negative space. If one of these is moving at speed towards you, you're gonna have a much harder time hitting it with some anti-armor ordinance than if it had traditional treads or a repulsorlift
This and the Homing spider droid were oddly absent in the Clone Wars series despite being the focal pieces of the droid army in Episode 2 and the Homing spider appearing in Episode 3.
The wheels gets the droid through deflector shields whereas a repulsorlift would not.
Oh dear, it's the prequel version of the TIE-Tank.
One thing to note is that, while it can't move laterally as you put, it could still turn in place very quickly.
I loved seeing these things when I was younger
The Hailfire Droid has been a favorite of mine since first watching AOTC.
I liked to think it kind of like as a kamikaze style. As the vulture droids and hyena bombers could also do that occasionally to both armored vehicles and ships like venators. Hailfire droid would simply use the speed to launch the missile salvos at all the numerous targets it would pick up and then proceed to run over infantry and possibly ram enemy tanks or artillery. Also to get the opponent to focus fire on it instead of on the other droid forces that would continue the fight. Also those big missile racks are kind of like a ticking bomb. I’d assume the whole thing would go massive boom if the racks were hit while still containing missiles, so it could take down enemies with it.
Weapon platform consisting on two weels with very small contact points to the ground, not being able to turn around quickly... I think that's as small over sight, but I get your point, it's targeting computer wouldn't be able to track targets behind or around it without a turret.
I love this vehicle. It's one of my favorites as a kid growing up when I played the star wars games especially the Very first battlefield game. I love this vehicle. It's really cool looking. I love it's missiles. It's in design and even in the movie it's really awesome
The hailfire is a really cool vehicle. It reminds me of the Cold War era Atgm (anti-tank guided missile) vehicles. Star Wars should use missiles more often.
Maybe repulsors are easier to detect on sensors? I could see using low detection tech for ambushes with something like this.
Was dumb in that it had no serious defensive abilities after its ammo ran out an lacked even considerable weapons or the ability other then to fill a niche. So yeah.. past a show of force an maybe an initial shock an all unit they basically had no purpose past that or vs heavily armed, armored an dug in forces that are specifically made to counter such units whom will probably shutdown an make short work of them pretty quick
Not everything needs to be geared towards long assaults, a rapid assault will lead to dead droids, so the best way to preform one is to go fast and hit as hard as you can as quickly as you can, one of these could potentially kill 30 ATTEs, even if that's a pipe dream and a half, one ATTE disable for one of these is worth there cost alone, even if they only use 15 missile and 5 are used to disable an ATTE, they they still have the chance to triple it's value right there
@@calebbarnhouse496 perhaps.. except that it DIDNT. an remember it's "brain" is rudimentary not advanced like some other models. It's high level strategic thinking is very limited or non existent. An what you mentioned DOESN'T make up for poor designing on a battlefield. Which very few if any places do you want to learn you put the wrong thing in wrong place or designed something poorly. That's why by mid to end of war they basically disappeared. Cuz they sucked at defensive abilities, they were hardly indestructible, an their armament was pretty vanilla or pailed compared to most everything else. one can only do so much with even units like these that was best suited for lighting raids an hit an runs the heavy assault an finish with suicidal charges
Rocket artillery, used properly, can be quite powerful as battlefield saturators.
Going on a death charge toward the enemy lines merrily spraying rockets downrange is, however, probably not a proper use unless the enemy’s on the verge of breaking.
@@Assassinus2 exactly. BUT the latter you mentioned, notice, was basically what they did. It's like they shoulda known better but was too dumb to realize some the basics. An the harsh truth of a battlefield an war as a whole especially is any 1 of anything is exceptionally weak especially charging at a huge enemy formation head on an it's packed with diverse units. Most of them elite or heavily armed an armored like the GAR. Even the legends like Sun Tzu on our reality an Thrawn an Tarkin in theirs never was fond of head on suicidal assaults. Tzu LITERAL Bible to successful war waging of any kind LITERALLY says DONT DO what they had these droids doing. An once they ran outta steam, which was pretty quick given their very limited weapon capabilities their sheer size an lack of mobility made them not much more then target practice once the ammo ran out.
Seems like a very practical tool. Drive the missiles within range, fire, drive away.
It’s a delivery system, not too different from those older-than-grandpa bombers used by the US and Russia in the real world to launch state of the art cruise missiles.
The complex engineering and great tech get used in the missile, not the dump truck used to deliver the missile.
It reminds me of the Catapult from Battletech, but with wheels in place of the legs. Also no jumpjets
This is probably my favorite underrated CIS units!
I love this series
The Hailfire is like a fast attack, shorter range, ambush-oriented Grad launcher. Simplicity in design means high volume production for both, both rely on saturation missile fire, and both are somewhat inaccurate.
I’d say the hailfire is better because its missiles actually do have guidance, though it’s not the best quality missile guidance. But higher mobility allows it to get into that shorter range needed, blast a bunch of targets, and get out. And if it’s lost, oh well.
My favorite clone wars vehicles hands down. It is criminally under utilized.
CIS engineer: “Hear me out. A missile battery, but we put a giant wheel on either side.”
The purpose behind the tracks is lower ground pressure. A tracked tank will be able to go through soft ground wheeled vehicles cant even think about crossing. I can guarantee one thing, anywhere driving not on hard packed dirt or stone this thing will sink and be stuck in minutes at most, and immediately after leaving the transport most likely.
Programing stop and go speed aside, it's turn speed is as good if not better than a tank. Basically it has two points of contact to the ground at a shorter distance than a tank, thus faster turns. Look at a Churchill tank and compare length of ground contact
Basically it's an expendable mobile missile platform. Great as an offensive artillery attack vehicle against enemy armour or fortifications, but once arsenal expended is out of the fight and easy to destroy.
Iirc the missiles (or the droid itself) had some sort of weakpoint-locating targeting system to maximize the missiles effectiveness. Then, the missiles would also fly erratically to make them harder to intercept or predict.
The impracticality of the 'Hailfire" design makes it ludicrous even as a long-range fire-support option.
The biggest element missing is an "on the go" ammo vehicle to reload the Hailfire; something that stays back while the Hailfire rolls in, dumps its 30, and rolls back to get reloaded before going out again.
I saw a couple other people talk about reading somewhere that they saw a flying drone reloaded them, which would be really powerful for this kind of vehicle
@@calebbarnhouse496 It would make sense (and mirror the real world) to have a mobile reloader somehow- though I think a flying drone would be problematic. (Like, why not just fire from it?) Something better armored and away from the front lines that acts essentially like a Formula 1 pit crew (but instead of tires, missile racks) would make more sense IMnsHO.
@@Sephiroth144 a jet engine flyer sure, but flyers in starwars use repulserlifts, and they are remarkably stable, as for why not fire from those? The reasonable answer would be small arms fire would be dangerous to them so they can't get the same good shots a hailfire can, while fragile it can take small arms fire for a hot minute
@@calebbarnhouse496 Indeed, fragility is why you wouldn't want them to get close, (and want to use the rolly tank) And, even repulsor lifts have weight (well, probably mass) limits...
Now, maybe its a triple vehicle situation; a heavy carrier/ammo vehicle, the Hailfire Tank, and a (few?) resupply droid/drones that go from the essentially fixed carrier vehicle to meet the Hailfire midway and reload it
@@Sephiroth144 I mean there's obviously something that deploys the ammo, but I would imagine that would be a general transport vehicle and then B1s lay the ammo out so that the drones can grab the ammo and go, it's probably cheaper to just have more drones constantly making trips then having vehicles just for it, particularly as your other transports will move the ammo up as well
This is my favorite vehicle in the Clone wars video game on the GameCube
Amazing
Personally I do see the Hailfire as a pretty good design, at least for its intended purpose. Its simple, lightweight, and likely cheap design makes it near-perfect for what you're supposed to do with it:
Step 1:Run in.
Step 2: fire everything at the enemy.
Step 3: Run out again.
Because of its cheap design and lack of crew, you don't really lose much if they get blown up. I imagine it would be brilliant for surprise attacks, imagine a gang of hell fires rolling over a nearby hill or from round a corner while you're distracted by conventional enemies?
Two thoughts on the wheels:
1: If they can move independently, then it'd be able to turn pretty quick.
2: It'd be nearly impossible to knock over.
#AskEck What is your favorite/most powerful faction in Star Wars canon?
Another cool CIS Droid, I hope you do more like the Protodeka.
The hailfire droid is just the Star Wars HIMARS, which is a multiple launch rocket artillery system currently in service with the US Military. It's designed to move into range very quickly, fire a bunch of rockets at the enemy and then retreat to rearm before the enemy can fire back.
Guys will look at a Separatist Hail-Fire Droid and think “hell yeah”
Hail yeah
Hailfire Droid: Beep boop pay your taxes Republic Dogs!
Clone Troopers: Wilhelm Scream
If one wheel can turn forward and the other wheel can turn backward, I wonder if that would allow it to actually rotate in place similar to a tank
Could you make some Videos about the Vehicles from the Game Cube Clone Wars Game? (Like the AT-XT). Or perhaps even some Lore-Vids about some of the places and characters (e.g. Cydon Prax).
"...Although the Droid is always aware of its final destination." It also has missiles, and "the missile knows where it is at all times." That's a lot of knowledge! 😂
My only real problem with it is that its missiles are in the open with no protection. While its speed may allow it to avoid much of the blaster fire, I can't imagine more than a few shots being able to blow up the entire payload. While it is fast, it's only fast going forward or back and anyone unlucky enough to be in front of it may just be able to blow it up with enough focused fire on the missiles. A simple fix would be armor on the payload.
Loved this droid
What I like about it is its seemingly simplistic design. Like I bet the USA. could make of of these on our own with rockets and smaller missiles!!
#AskEck What do we know of the development of the Venator? Was it ready at the outset of the Clone Wars or did it enter service sometime after it began? And what did the Republic Navy have before the Venator (and by extension, the Victory) came into service that could stand up to Seperatist capital ships?

Repulsor lift engines were more energy hungry. Additionally, some planets actively interfered with repulsor lift engines. Wheels are just more reliable.
While it wouldn't have been able to do true lateral movement, it should have been able to make sharp left and right turns by simply turning one wheel. I can see this being an absolute monster in urban fighting scenarios to harry advancing forces.
Thing was OP AF in the OG Clone Wars game
Clone Pilot: makes it from a insane ass space battle to the surface below.
That same Clone Pilot: why is there 20 missiles locking on to me?🤨
No gameplay clips from Star Wars: The Clone Wars game from 2002? You can play as a hailfire droid in multiplayer! It was the fastest vehicle. Game was a blast!
It seems like the vehicle was designed around the missiles.
It seems they are very short range. So a vehicle that can get them into range quickly is paramount. The survival of the platform or rearming does not appear to be a concern at all.
Notably the missile has a erratic flightpath. This is either a design error or active evasion of point defense.
God I love CIS Droids/ Designs. Hailfire just screams intimidation
It would be useless on anything but hard ground its ground pressure would make it sink in everything else, that said if used in groups as a strike and faid weapon it could be verry lethal, but only if terrain allows, so it was probably not be worth the logistics space most of the time if a sing bit of soft ground can defeat it
See how the wheels are angled being wider a[art at the top than at the bottom. Years ago, I made a model and found that the angled wheels made it self righting.
The CIS have always had the better looking ships. Love everything they have!
