How to Launch your car perfectly using a Clutch Release Valve - Jay's Tech Tips

  • Consistently launching your car perfectly every time can be a difficult skill to master. The hard part is that you can break a lot of expensive parts while you are learning the sill, so the learning process can get very expensive and unaffordable.
    Launching too hard can break parts or spin the tires, launching too soft will ruin your race.
    Using a hydraulic valve between the clutch pedal and the slave cylinder on the transmission can control the speed that the clutch releases, and do it at the same speed every time, regardless of how your foot comes off the clutch pedal.
    There is a mechanical version that slows the clutch pedal release in every gear change, or an electronic model that can be configured to only slow the clutch release on the launch, and then allow normal clutch operation in the following gear changes on your pass.
    Using a clutch release valve can take the inconsistency out of your launch, which will give you more confidence to win races.

    I'm not a pro drag racer but, when I do start with my friends (on road without incline) while in neutral, release brake... clutch down, while putting it in first gear, I at the same time press the gas pedal to 2000 RPM, +/- 100 RPM, I keep gas pedal in place because I lean my right foot on the side wall so I get consistent rpm, drop clutch till the release moment, when it starts to move I press more gas and drop the clutch fully in like 0.4 seconds, so I don't stall or burn it. Anyone with manual car can do it, all you need is to practice a few times till you feel the car.

      +Vlad Mitrofan Yeah, but this is aimed at cars with a lot more power (think 600Hp+) which are way more harder to launch than a 180Hp car.

      @JoshuaPlays99 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's fine for your 180 crank horsepower car. But tell me that works consistently with 800+ wheel horsepower.

    The factory mechanical ClutchDelayValve (CDV) was one of the first things I removed off my BMW :-D (recommended!) You don't want the delay in every gear change. It also makes daily driving quite uncomfortable..especially with cold fluids.
    But I get why it could be useful in drag racing for getting off the line although I'd only get the electronic system.

    I think these still wont get you the best times like knowing your car and getting it fine tuned with foot than valves, I think the delay is half a second and for some its alot + if you change clutch change drive shaft too so it wont break. 1000+ hp cars that drag race have aftermarket shafts and no clutch valves, BUT I REALLY like it since I drive automatic I can use this in a manual for my future cars.

  • @corbingreiner9879
    @corbingreiner9879 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I gained "magic foot" by simply buying a clutch rated at way more house power then the engine could produce. Admittedly I did kill a couple of drive lines. Magic foot is not free.

    • @amggilly305

      slipping the clutch will always shorten it's life but it's better than shocking the drive train, breaking differentials, etc

    Or you can just practice launching a few times a day....

    • @jackalo626
      @jackalo626 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cory lepire The risk of breakage is still there every time so you are only playing a numbers game and speeding up your time for breaking something. The valve once set will have you consistent in the correct way. To each their own. Of course my comment is towards someone who isn't very good at launching only.

    • @MrManuel1329
      @MrManuel1329 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      if spent 15 to 20k on a build you don't want to risk blowing things up.

    • @HowardSupra
      @HowardSupra 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +cory lepire No one is perfect, regardless of how much you practice there will be differences in how fast you release every single time.

      +The Channel of Stuff that's fine and good until you're making like 750+ hp (599 kw) to the wheels like most every single car Real Street makes. No matter how good you are you will break something eventually.

      +The Channel of Stuff There's a big difference between a 100~hp econobox with a sprung, solid disc OE clutch and a 700+hp race car with an unsprung 3/4/5/6 puck clutch.
