How do those exhaust valves work in this application? It looks like closing this valve would completely close the exhaust pipe and choke the engine since it doesn't have an alternate usually unrestricted path.

The car is seeing about 18% drive losses, which is quite acceptable for a supercharged and auto trans vehicle.

They are exhaust cutouts. When open, it dumps the exhaust out before the muffler so it's actually louder than the straight through "muffler"
