I really like the crotal bell frag - it's from an unusually large bell prob used for a more exceptional animal; A prize bull or something... as you know these survive even less well due to their size but finding bits still special!Hope you have a good weekend Martin and thanks for watching! What a brooch!! Done so well that it looks like Lapis Lazuli stones! Ally dear, I have yet to see a guy using a spray bottle in the field that looked the least bit girlie. I am preparing for the promise of flooding this weekend. It may actually be a drought buster for us. We have not had a flash flood in a few years now and it shows.
Well be careful Cyndye we have had some big flooding here a few days ago - nothing life threatening though.. in fact I have come to Slovenia to fish and the weather and all the rain is very bad here too! The world is fast becoming a very erratic place to live - stay safe!!!! x

I know SS - I put in quite a lot of work though... sometimes I don't do much else in the hope that one day this channel might take off and all the time I put in to it may pay off! I spat out my coffee today, after the magnificent broach, your first find was a roman coin, not much to write home about, then your hammed coin. I detected yesterday for a few hours yesterday, I’m sick and all I found was an early 1930’s hood ornament, a 1920’s railway button and some boring coins lol 😂 I am in Australia 🇦🇺 so I don’t suspect I will ever find a roman 😆 loving your work as always

A button - we dream of finding buttons! No but seriously, yet another bunch of inspiring and amazing finds, the brooch is an incredible piece. The lead weights look similar to those used on a groma perhaps? I did get coin find of the month at the club the other day for my early Victorian farthing, so there are little successes occasionally 😄

That brooch was worth the trip! I have often wondered why some Roman coins accrue those special 'lumps'? As you know, when cleaning them we sort of hit a brick wall. I have tried electrolysis on them and, up to now it has always been 'goodbye coin'! I'm sure I wont be the only one to see how you get on with it Alex.

@@HolzHammerSagas yep I did but the so called experts give them a general date, I've 2 and both came from 11th century sites I have with many other items from this tight period, pre 1066 definitely...all the best, I used to have fresh land like yours 20 yrs ago, your lucky!

One of the nicest brooches I've seen, Alex. Do you get a real thrill, as I do, when on those rare occasions you brush away some dirt to find some colour grinning back at you?
Its why we do it John isn't it?! That was the first thing in about three hours so you can imagine the feeling as i was thinking "better dig this cartridge end ...at least I will clear it so I don't have to hear it next time... now then, whats this?!" The star would be to sharp for a spur rowel. It would injure the horse or make it buck severely, IMO. Possibly an ornament for leather.
Well you say that Chuck but those medieval bruisers obviously didn't care! It is quite typical to have them like that I found quite a few almost identical types on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website and each spike is very tapered if you know what I mean.. not flat at all so would not have sat against anything comfortably if it were a mount... who knows? 😁

chuckles... i thought electrocution is more like the electrical chair.. has the coin done anything wrong? :) electrolysis just sounds so much friendlier but there is maybe another way... something what works partly quiet nicely is put the coin in boiling hot water and add a corega taps or how the 3th teeth cleaning tabs are named in england and leave that over night... sometimes you get stunning results with old coins that way without damaging them. greetings from bavaria
