Owning a Tesla/Electric Vehicle in Minnesota: Pros & Cons & Review

  • At least once a week I am stopped by someone in a parking lot or in the neighborhood asking about how I like my Tesla. I pretty much get the same question(s) every time and I pretty much give the same answer(s) every time, so I figured a video reviewing my thoughts would be helpful to anyone considering an EV or Tesla in our climate.
    Overall, I am happy so far with my Model S, which I have had for almost 2 years and have put many miles on. I love having a fun vehicle for buzzing around town on showings and appointments and it serves as a very comfortable mobile office as well. I actually enjoy killing time in my car and working from the driver seat. I have only had one issue, which was a known issue with the motor in the handles failing. I scheduled an appointment right on my app and a technician was out here a couple of days later and made the repair in my driveway, pretty cool.
    What are some of your pros & cons with owning an EV?

    I like my model 3 LR in the MN winter. Just ger 250v power for a level 2 charger and plug them in.

    How much were your tires and rims? I’m buying a Tesla model 3 & would love to know how much I should set aside. I’m thinking around $2k?

      For a separate set of tires and wheels, I'd budget like 2-3k. Discount Tire has been fantastic to me. If you have one in your area, I highly suggest giving them a shot.

    Have you ever had problems with the pop-out door handles when there was freezing rain? I guess pre-warming the car must help there. I live in the Toronto area, which is a lot warmer than the Cities, but we still get some nasty weather in the winter. I worked for years in Detroit Lakes, and I suspect a Tesla would be a bit of a challenge there.

      Hi John! I have never had any issues with the handles in freezing rain. I do advise that you be careful and strategic with when you wash the car though. You're right the pre-warming does also solve this potential issue. Thansk for the comment and sorry for the delay in response!

    Good news! The Tesla Model S is only $94,000.00! What a bargain for me! (As long as I can live in it.)

      Better news you can ger a CPO low miles model 3 long range AWD in the $30,000 range and its better in many ways than a S.

      @@MotoGPatrick My car buying formula is purchase cost divided by $100 a month. So, I paid $4,000.00 for a rust free 1996 Lincoln Town Car. If it lasts 40 months (40X $100 = $4,000.00) as a commuter without any mechanic repairs, I've done very well. So far, it's lasted 26 months and I've put 22,000 miles on it with no repairs except one free and easy one when a bolt came loose and landed on the carpet. I put the bolt back in, and it's good as new.
      So, that $30,000.00 Tesla ($7,500.00 subsidized by the government and license, taxes, etc are extra) would have to last 300 months, or 25 years to reach my formula. I think that the least expensive used Tesla I've seen on Craigslist was around $18,000.00 for a 2014, and it had 100,000 miles on it. If it would last 15 years, it could reach my $100/month formula, but I don't think that would be likely without a new battery at 10 to $20,000. Again, if I could live in the car, it would be a great deal because I wouldn't need to pay for my house, but Teslas don't seem very accommodating compared to my house.

      Cost of Tesla's has become quite affordable, compared to the ICE market. Everyone has different budgets and needs. They certainly can get expensive but prices have really softened!

    "This month, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), the international regulatory authority with the mission to ensure the reliability of the electric grid, released the latest version of its Long-Term Reliability Assessment (LTRA).
    The report warns that a growing number of areas in North America face the risk of power outages, and the regional electric grid to which Minnesota belongs, the Midcontinent Independent Systems Operator (MISO), is one of the areas most at risk of rolling blackouts in the years to come."

    I wonder what would happen if you were RWD instead of AWD

    • @zoldxzimmer
      @zoldxzimmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to imagine that if a vehicle with this kind of torque has any sort of 2WD it would result in a lot of tire spin. Traction control would need to be on point!
