I haven’t really had the chance to try much African food (I live in a super small retirement town where the main population is made up of white & hispanic people) but I’ve seen some dishes on the internet that look SO good 😩 The main ones I really want to try are oxtail stew, fufu & okra soup, piri piri chicken, bunny chow, and nyama na irio!

That sponge bread is called Injera, it’s meant to be used to pick up the food with your hands. Love that they incorporated that into the dish. However Ethiopia is in East Africa and Jolof (excuse my spelling) is a West African dish. When Lion King was originally made it’s my understanding that they went to Kenya and Tanzania before producing the film. Neither dish is served in either of those countries. Ethiopia is in East Africa where the movie takes place but that is not a dish served in those countries. It’s basically an African inspired restaurant which I love but I wish they’d offer more history and background to each meal they’re serving. I wish more people understood the vast variety of dishes and flavors that come out of Africa.. there’s 50+ countries in Africa.. that’s like a movie taking place in Canada but serving Mexican dishes because it takes place in North America..for context it just doesn’t make sense once you understand that Africa isn’t all the same.
You hardly see African foods portrayed as something considered high art, this really brings a smile to my face.
