    Making sure you have the right license is one of the most important items to check as you start to live your new #RVLifestyle. You will need to really do all your own research to determine the laws for your State. This video was simply a way to describe our situation and we are no expert in this field.

    A friend of mine who RV’s part time mentioned it to me that you need a CDL. Like you I asked numerous people and all were of the opinion that no you don’t. I went to my local licensing office and they said no you don’t as well. I do have a CDL because that’s what I do for a living. Thankyou for delving into this important topic! It’s sad to think even Government agencies aren’t aware. 😔

    Toddman, I had the same issues in Texas. They require the same, Class A non-cdl for over 26,001 pounds. Dealership told me I didn't need one. DMV was confused about the requirements. But so glad I did it too, written test and driving test. Piece of cake! And legal!!!!

    Great video Todd. This video needs to be out here! I have a CDL W/medical certificate (truck driver for 45 years, retired now) and I’ve tried to explain this to friends and other campers about needing a non commercial class A license to legally tow their 40+ foot 5th wheels. They all give me that deer in the headlights look! I have a Ram 3500 and pull a Cyclone 3950 (41 feet long) toyhauler and I’m covered with my license for my State of California. Again Todd, you da man for going the extra miles to find out this information and to get it out on your TH-cam channel. I am sharing this video with all my fellow RV’ers that need to see this video. You definitely Switched It Up this time you’re an asset to the community. Bravo Zulu! ♥️

      Greg- As a CDL operator of a Class-B work truck (Air Brake, Medical, HOS, ect), 26,000lbs (Wait for it!) Actual 28,000lbs and REGISTERED as 30,000 Thus I was required to get a CDL. Now I own my own 40 foot Class A at 36,000 lbs which is not only heavier than anything I've driven, it's the longest vehicle I've driven. Like you, I've taken the tests and actually whole heartedly believe that a higher "class" of license for heavier vehicles are issued with Studying and Tests is actually important for all of us.
      For example; I know somebody that's been driving a Diesel Pusher for almost three years, and just NOW is asking what Air over Hydraulic is! That Tells me a lot of things. He doesn't understand Air Brakes- how they operate, do Safety Checks or even know where the Hydraulic fluid reservoir is. He doesn't even know what's going to happen when he looses Air pressure!. So, this education, testing and certification is quite important for the owner to have been made aware of ahead of time.
      But My focus here Greg is how some States are inclusive of Recreational Vehicles into the Licensing of Commercial Vehicles. To Me; this is GD Stoopid as a Recreational Vehicle is NOT a Commercial Vehicle. An RV does not meet the federal definition of a Commercial Truck. It's like these states have laws, that they don't even understand the definition of their own laws. This is the most aggravating part of all this and is likely the cause of all the arguments you and I have had with other people about Needing "CDL's" for RVs. All because of a few stOoPiD states that treat Weight as the defining criterium of Commercialism..
      I could go on.. But I digress. (Shakes my head like my instructor did)...

    • @greghall9006
      @greghall9006 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@miketomas8564 I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’ve never understood why I’m required to have a special license in my State (California) to legally pull my 41 foot 5th Wheel trailer, yet some old geezer, half blind, and can barley walk can drive a Class A diesel pusher with air brakes right off the RV lot not knowing anything about the air brake system or anything about operating a large vehicle. Yes folks, these people are out there trying to drive an RV they know nothing about. All States should require every RV owner that drives or tows above a certain weight or length to complete a safety course. I had to prove I could drive that big rig, and I had to prove I could ride and handle a motorcycle. So why in the hell don’t ALL these States require these big RV rig drivers to take a course? OK, like you Mike, I’m stepping down off my soap box now! Have a good day Mike. ♥️

    As a holder of a Class A CDL, even tho I have retired, I keep it. The difference between the class A license and Class A CDL, as I see it, with a Class A CDL you also have to go thru a medical exam at least every 2 years or less if you are meds for any health issues. The Class A CDL training also covers air brakes. In my opinion it’s a good training for anyone towing no matter what.

    6:32pm mst Great video!
    On a side note: Most Truck dealerships and RV dealerships don’t know anything about GVWR, payload, towing capacities and hitch weight as it relates to the truck you are towing with.
    As recent…brand new RV and truck shoppers, we had the hardest time dealing with salesmen (truck and RV) that didn’t understand what we needed to tow safely. We thought the dealerships would know all this, but we were absolutely wrong! We had to educate ourselves and after hours and hours of research on our own- to be quite honest-we educated some of the dealerships! Do your own research-as always! Know before you tow is for real! We learned so much! Stay safe!

    Thanks for the great information. In December of last year we changed our domicile from NY to FL. Both of us had CLD licenses because we drove school buses for over 35 years before retiring. When we changed to FL we gave up our CDL licenses since we didn't need them to drive our class-A motorhome.

    ...an added note here. My wife and I currently reside in Texas. We are in the process of buying a 45' Prevost RV. Without a toad, it will require a class B non cdl license. With a Toad and or trailer, it will require a class A non-cdl license. Each of these has a weight limit of 26001 pds.
    Now to the problem. How to get one?
    The easiest thing to do, is check out your local truck driving schools. For $800 +/- You can go to a class and set, learn, for a class A, class B, or class C...CDL. Keep in mind this tiers upward. As such, a class A (bottom of the tier), will allow you to (because it is over and above both non-class a & b), and it will allow you to drive legally in any state that requires a non cdl license. As long as you are legal in your home state.
    Our Prevost will weight in at around 60k. As such it only makes sense for me to go this route. I set and learn, they set up the test (written and road), i pass, i get the license. Most importantly, I am legal in the eyes of any insurance firm, because i have met my state's legal requirement to drive said vehicle.
    Lastly. If, you can afford an expensive rv, you can spend a few days in class and learn just how to handle it legally.
    ScottishxPride, Tx.

    Todd, All of this falls into one specific thing. It is called your domicile state. That is what is the most critical point.
    That is why you must do everything right when you decide to start traveling. Currently I live in Oregon. Under the State of Oregon guidelines I am required to have a Class B minimum to drive our HDT due to it having air brakes. Oregon does not have a destination between a Commercial Drivers license or other a Class B and A are both commercial. However you just are not mandated to have the medical since you are not performing for hire.
    How ever since I am for hire and have a Class A, I need to have the medical card. Now some drivers may have a medical card but have restrictions placed on them by the doctor. Such as a 30, 60, 90 day or 1 year card. Also doctors can say you are only allowed to drive intrastate and not cross country.
    Now back to the domicile state. We have chosen South Dakota as our domicile state. Once I retire in August we are selling everything and will be locating there for all intense purposes. That means all of our bills go there, our banking is there, our voting is there, our vehicle registration is there and our taxes. We are considered residents of the State of South Dakota..
    As for driving your vehicle it is licensed in South Dakota same as you so you are bound by that states licensing requirements and all other state are required to recognize that. That's called reciprocity which is agreed to by each state.
    Now here's😮 where it could get really sticky if someone had a good attorney. Since most of us use You Tube and film videos for money because our channels are monetized. A good one could say we are a commercial operation and since we use our RVS to facilitate our living. Guess what you may need a COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE. JUST REMEMBER ATTORNEYS ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN ROB YOU WITH A BRIEF CASE AND NOT A GUN.
    Safe travels and roads Brian and Cindy, "xtreambydesign with passion"

    Todd, you did a wonderful job on this video. I am a over the road truck driver for over 40 yrs. Just having a CDL puts you in a club. What I mean is, your not a weekend warrior rv'r. some people get a better insurance rate for a professional license. If you do get a HDT in the future just get the air brake indorcment on your license for your own comfort of understanding the process and repairs needed for air brakes. It's your own peace of mind and keep in mind,if your over 26000, you might need to also put a NOT FOR HIRE sticker on the side of your pu.

      Kansas does not have an air brake endorsement listed for noncommercial vehicles that I saw in the statue. He does not have a CDL he has a noncommercial class A and the HDT as a vehicle has an exception for non commercial use for license plates.

    Great video Todd. I have been researching this since we moved to Texas. I should have looked at it before we got our licenses and left TX. Anything over 26k, meaning 26,001 lbs requires a Class A NON-CDL in Texas. 5th wheel owners 100% need one. Their law is confusing as there are two categories of exempt class A and B. Now I have to go back and get a new license. Truck is 14k and 5th wheel is 13.6k. Maria is not gonna be happy. Good news is it appears the test is only left and right turns in town and backing up in a straight line. Again, thanks for the video. We should all be covering these topics and sharing the knowledge.

    Great video Todd I just went through the same thing this week in my state of South Carolina. I had CDL’s back in 2016 because I wasn’t driving I gave them up. They could have given me the class F license and I wouldn’t have had to go through the testing procedures. The girl at the front desk told me that I didn’t need them so I took her word. She was wrong. I had to take everything all over both the written test and the driving test.

      How hard is it in South Carolina. I upgraded my tow rig and the new ratings have me over the 26k

    • @sonnymassey4179
      @sonnymassey4179 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hmarv347 its just a process with the government you have to take a written test which isn’t that hard but the driving test is a pain. First you have to figure out where the test is given if you are in the upstate go to Spartanburg there the nicest. The driving test unfortunately isn’t based on your ability to maneuver, your RV it’s based on backing a box truck up into a dock area. On my driving test I had to drive through a small town.

    I was working on this very issue and had planned on making a information video about it but you pretty much got it all
    We live in Ontario Canada and have weight restrictions on driver licences. I just purchased a HDT to tow with and i coudnt get insurance without proving
    I was properly licenced...I hold a CDL equivalent licence and have been driving professionally for almost 40 years...im not the licence police, but i think some form of training & licence should be required for 8000lbs combined and above, just to keep north American HWY's safe.
    Thanks for doing the right thing and being a leader...👏👏👏👏👏👏‼️

    This is an outstanding video with excellent information. A friend of mine tows a triple rig (1-ton TV, 12K 5er, and a boat trailer with boat) and has been pulled over a couple of times. His issues: GCVWR and length. With the boat trailer, he was over the 26K TV + 10K trailer combined maximum and over the length limits; he needed a CDL. Texas has the 26K GVWR limit for a Class A with a maximum 10K trailer limit. There are a lot of people pulling big rigs with a regular Class A totally oblivious to the regulations. Many thanks for putting this together. It was very valuable.
    Safe travels, y'all!

    I’ve been arguing for this in the state of Kentucky for years. Sadly nobody seems to care. Case in point, you can drive a semi truck without CDL training in Kentucky, you just have to get a farm exemption on your license and be driving a farm registered vehicle. Can’t tell you how many farm registered vehicles I’ve seen over the years, that couldn’t pass a state vehicle inspection, let alone a DOT inspection. But the state looks the other way for some reason. Glad to know Kansas isn’t like that. More than the license, I’d rather see a national regulation for drivers training. Like you said, a truck pulling something 43’ long rows a lot different than a pickup with a pop-up. People need to understand the brake system their trailer is equipped with. How to pair it with their towing vehicle. What tire inflation pressures they need for their weight. Etc etc etc
    Great video as usual Todd 👍🏼

      If you read the Kansas statue a CDL would not cover towing a noncommercial rig like an RV you would need to get a non commercial class A, B, or C license. The statue is worded poorly they use to have an RV exception like many states. Every state is different but Kansas is worded very poorly.

    Bobby And i had to both do this test in Cape Breton through alittle town and one way tight side street. To get a condition A on our drivers license. We both had to unhook the trailer, drive through little side streets and then back it up in the lot.. not everyone knows you need this is you are over 10,000 pounds. But we told if something happened in an accident you could be in alot of trouble if you didn’t have it. Cheers Shelley & Bob

    Great information. We have a similar law in Illinois. People become confused because RVs, and emergency vehicle operators are exempt from obtaining a CDL. However, Illinois law requires your driver's license cover the GVWR of the vehicle you drive or combined truck/trailer. This has nothing to do with commercial and everything to do with the GVWR. Your license must cover the GVWR. Good Job!!!

    Hey Tood
    It's good that you shared this with everyone as most don't know that it is a requirement for rigs over 26k
    We here in Ontario Canada have had this license requirement for a long time.
    Here it is called a restricted A
    As well if you are driving a truck with air brakes you also need a Z class air brake endorsement. This allows us to drive a HDT as long as the trailer is electric brakes. The Z endorsement is also needed for a class A motorhome if it has air brakes.
    Hope this helps any of your Canadian crew if they didn't know

    CA has the same law. If your fifth wheel is over 15,000lbs you are required to have a Non-Commercial Class A. No backing, just driving around town, wow that was great. I had to go over the braking system, steering system, safety equipment, "pre-trip inspection" of the truck and fifth wheel. Then I was required to do backing monoverse, switch back backing and so on. Once I completed this then I did a road test. To maintain this license every two years, have to summit a medical certification.
    Yes, I heard the same thing from other's but think of this If you don't have the license, it will only take one guy who is up on the vehicle codes. Not only can he/she give tickets but can impound your truck and fifth wheel.

    We went through a similar experience in PA. My husband researched it before we started full timing and had both state troopers and dmv staff tell him he didn’t need a Class A non commercial. He drove for a year illlegally before getting it. Even then the DMV supervisor said he really didn’t need to get it as it was unlikely that he would ever be stopped. After he took the test, the same supervisor said it was good he got it because if he was ever in an accident withou the Class A license, it was like driving with no license at all.

    • @dkkauffmanjr
      @dkkauffmanjr ปีที่แล้ว

      I am curious. I love in PA as well and I asked same thing. I was told same thing as your husband because our state doesn't have a non commercial class A. I've been stopped and checked and left go with no offense. So if our state law says it's okay and police say it's okay then we are still legal? And did he have to goto a CDL school for his license or was he able to do it with his truck and trailer?
      Thank you for any input you may be able to provide.

  • @technojerry
    @technojerry ปีที่แล้ว

    In NV the local DMV offices know the process for RV non-commercial Class A. The office in northern NV are pretty cool about it in that they allow you to drive your rig to the testing facility. I have heard in CA they will fail you if you drive to the test facility with the license or a learners permit with a licensed with you. The test in NV is more involved. It includes a 15 min Pre trip walk through including fluid levels, horn, lights, defroster (even in the summer), etc. Besides the road test with left turn, pull over and merge, it includes 100’ straight backup, 90 deg back into a slot, stopping accurate close, but behind a line, etc. There is of course a written test too. NV has the endorsement E for over 10,000 lbs. Non commercial is CGVWR at 26,001 and above. Think it is one reason Ford sells a F350 with a 10,000 GVWR sticker sticker so with a GVWR 16,000 trailer you are under even though I think the truck is built the same as my 11,500 GVWR F350.

  • @dhillman7522
    @dhillman7522 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have tried to explain this to many of the Other fulltime RV channels, But they don't think it applies. You are right the CHP, Trooper whoever pulls you over does not care what payload you have. They will look at the GVWR on the trailer and the truck then add them together for the GCVWR. You could be told to stop until someone with the proper license comes to tow your rig. If your in an accident your insurance will not cover you and you could be sued. What's even worse are poeple who tow way over the rating for the truck but that is a whole other conversation.
