@Perseus1275 tbh it’s a whole lot easier to shift a 13 speed than it is a 10. Most of the time you’re going to start in 4th, so you go 4-5 then flip the switch for the high stage and do all your highs and lows. But once you get up to speed and your on the highway, climbing a hill you have more control and power.
Once you start to climb a hill with a 10 speed, you need to: push in the clutch, take the gear out of its position, give the engine some throttle to drop the gear. With a 13 speed you can shift to the low gear while applying throttle and simply release the throttle to go into 10-low. You still have to use the same technique as a 10 speed when going from 10 low to 9 high but not as often which smooths out your ride.

You actually explained it very well, I really want to learn how to go thru the gears while driving down the road, I’ve moved a 13 speed T680 but it was around the yard because the tech that was woking on it didn’t know how to drive manual and even then it felt really cool to move a truck like that

2 things I loved about driving was shifting and backing up. During the day I worked the yard in a shunt truck and the afternoon was spent on the big city roads delivering loads or picking up usually either hanging meat or boxed meat. That boxed meat was heavy but kept me in shape. Too old for that now. Excellent video

Not many people knows this, but if you put it into low gear, while the ranger is up, you can use it as a 4th gear. It's very useful when going around a corner and you're too lazy to flip the ranger down and back up again to go into 4th. Or you can go from 3rd to Low, then use the splitter to go into 4th hi. This really changes the way you drive the truck

When you downshift, blip the throttle to get the RPM where it should be when the transmission shifts into the lower gear.
It helps if you had a motorcycle at some point when you were a kid.
My first car was a standard transmission with synchromesh gearing and my GSXR (sportbike)also required good shifting skills.
Kids today have little opportunity to learn to shift in their cars, so taking the CDL is their first time.

Best way to learn is just to experience it. A 13 speed works in an H pattern and to split the gears, it brings your RPM’s about halfway down in your sweet spot when you put it in the high of that gear. With a 10 speed, you have to pull it clear over to the left and back to put it into 6th gear. Your low range only helps to gain momentum from a dead stop.

Best way I learned is to be gentle with both the throttle and the gear shift. Just let the throttle float down until you can gently pull out of gear, don't let off the throttle all at once. The trick is to eliminate any pressure on the actual gears inside the transmission so they're not binding and can easily disengage.

Black "needle" is the Range selector. Red "needle" is the Splitter. The gear you are trying to call 12th is 8 Lo. Use to be 8 Direct before the Direct and Overdrive splits had to be dumbed down to Lo and Hi.

I thought the splitter in the up position was direct and the splitter down is low. Because how I picture it all working, is the auxiliary box is just a reducer, (splitter switch down activates it.) and the splitter up is using main box ratios with the auxiliary box in a direct or pass through state. ?

The reality of the situation is you don't even need to drive it like a 13 speed. Just an 8 speed. 1,2,3,,4...splitter, 5,6,7,8 and then when ur over 60mph on the highway, flip the red switch, let off the gas, and then accelerate again, puts it in the final gear. When slowing down off highway, let off gas, flip switch back, then accelerate, moves it back to 8th and you can downshift like normal etc. That's the way my instructor taught me.

I love watching people explain how to float and double clutch gears, not sure why, but i do. that was a good demonstration. im curious if you were heavy in this video? in the simulator when im light, i start in 3rd, float to 5th, float to 7th until im up to speed. i only use 1st, 2nd, and 4th when heavy. Do you ever shift this way in those situations or do you always go in order regardless?

If you’re at the right speed then yeah I suppose you could skip gears. In my rather limited experience using a manual, it was easier to skip gears when I downshifted. Going from 60mph at 13th gear I could slow down in neutral and put it a different gear depending on the speed. Didn’t do it much mind you, just if I ever lost my gear when downshifting one gear at a time 😅

You made it easy, I already knew how to drive manual cars but definitely not trucks. It's basically the same process except you do not the clutch very often and more gears..

Just like driving your manual car without the clutch. I did that all the time back in the day. It's something you have to just do a few times to get the feel for it. But once you've got it, you'll never forget.

There are two types of 13 speed transmissions. One has a black splitter which splits the lower 5 gears and one is red which splits the upper 5 gears. Construction vehicles like dump trucks tend to have the black splitter for low range splitting. The 18 speeds have the blue splitter.

As a older long distance big rig driver heavy hauler I'm telling you take these shifts videos extremely light they are dangerous and can get someone hurt 🤕 what they show you is flat land and no threats if you think I'm lying 🤥 see if can find any videos of someone fully loaded going up a 12% up grade hills or down grade shifting gears without a clutch especially this guy with a engine factory set at 1500. Danger # 1 going down hill if you get out of gear and no matching rpm to get back into gear now you have a runaway danger # 2 up hill at 12% if you didn't double clutch it will not go back in gear now a rollback potential😮

The ability to float gears saved me when I lost the hydraulics in my clutch in an old Civic. I drove about 30 miles including freeways. The catch was I had to use the starter in 1st gear to get the car moving.

    It was cool.
I already know how, but please show the downshift process for those who don't.
Even on a trans with full synchro, there's generally a bit of wear, so double-clutching makes life easier when you know what it's about.
    Cheers.

No shot you recorded this on my highway (I work for CalTrans). I know exactly where you were lol. That's the end of my northern boundary. Hopefully you're one of "them", but thank you guys for moving over for us. Only the semi trucks pulling big trailers actually get over. The other heavy trucks just don't care and will stay in the lane closest to where we are, creating a more dangerous environment for us.

Thanks!! I knew how to do double clutch, but its tiresome and annoying...and for most of the time ive drove a semi ive been in an auto truck delivering welding gases and other Hazmat stuff and now switching jobs and will sometimes be in manuals now so this will help. I already can do smooth clutchless shifting on my motorcycle so the way you let off and wait till it falls in and blipping throttle to get it to drop into lower gears made sense pretty quick!

Going to study hard and do my best and hopefully by a few months of learning in a light truck and studying the truck driving book, hopefully i will gain some knowledge of what to do instead of just going to the school not knowing anything at all. The school is also only a 13 speed
