I almost skipped watching this video, as I thought "that's ridiculous". BUT MAN I couldn't have been more wrong. I really appreciate y'all taking the time to do this video. I had no idea all the perks of it (The price, the storage, flexibility, insurance). You've sent me down a rabbit hole now...

This is one of the most informative RV videos I've seen in a long time. I would never have known how relatively inexpensive this kind of setup could be. There seem to be some obvious drawbacks and I think I would feel a little self conscious about driving this rig into some of the parks I've been to, but for a particular cross country RV lifestyle I would definitely consider this. Great content!

Please don't take this in the wrong way. Don't know if it's a statement or an inquiry.
We hear all the time full timers making the same statement , " our schedule is so tight, don't know if ????". I'm not a full timer anymore because of health issues and my almost 91 year old mother who we live together. It's my home but it's also her home.
Certainly, you're going to have doctors appointments, dental appointments just have to be hear at a certain time , those you plan around. So all the rest is your time to relax enjoy life and the people you're around or move on. Ir say to each other , I'm tire of being here let's move on. And then decide on where to go. Somethings are seasonal those are a given . If driving along and see something on a Billboard that you want to see. You talk it over and you stop for a day or a week.
I know you get what I'm trying to say. I hope you don't take it the wrong way. Just asking.
      Don

@@donwat91 Going with an HDT seems like a point A to point B sort of thing with minimal stops in between. A Class B or small Class C would be the ticket for the travelling style you described.

Would own one in a heart beat . After driving large trucks for 32 yrs and towing all sorts of equipment this would be my choice to pull a 3 axle rv if the cash flow would allow it to happen…lol……..love the extra length for storing his jeep on the back of the class 8 , unique design 😎☀️👍

Rob has a nice unit. A little long for flexibility but he has the ability to bring a regular car. We've been fulltiming on the road for 7 years in an HDT. It's definitely not for everyone but it also doesn't really limit us. We've been to the Keys and to Alaska and volunteered in Yellowstone for the NPS. Talking to people like us would give you a more rounded perspective on the lifestyle. Oh well... maybe someday. Have a great huddle. Enjoy the road and safe travels. Aloha David

    • @craigreuter8083
      @craigreuter8083 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Yes, about 5'-6' longer than most. Ours is 32' long, towing a 45' 5er. You do the math. We've been down in Quartzsite for the last month with the HDT group, many different styles & sizes. Anyone interested should go to the West Coast HDT rally in Caldwell, Idaho or the National HDT rally in Hutchinson, Kansas. BTBT, Looking forward to crossing paths in the future, great videos. Ours is not that ummm fancy...we have a 2006 Mack, got 20k invested in it, new brakes, exhaust, some other stuff. We got the bed, hitch and new tires to go, figure we'll be into it for around 30k+/- when we're done. 100 gals fresh and 100 gals holding. Her name is Ouida Pearl, and she is a work in progress. Carries 200g of diesel, gets 10mpg..still tandem..we like her...a lot.

Great video and Rob has a gorgeous unit. We started full timing 3 1/2 years ago and it was our first RV experience. We were all set for a 1-ton dually and then came across the HDT in a video similar to this. Ours have the Smart car (which we bought a year before the truck as we finished our RV build), so it is a little shorter (29’), but the extra storage is amazing. The safety and comfort was the deciding factor for us and we never looked back.
Last year we did over 100 different stops, spanning parks, resorts, Harvest Hosts, national forest, etc. with zero issues or concerns.
Thanks for spreading the word and debunking some of the myths of great alternative.

HDT life is a #1 pick for you two. I've been driving over the road for 40 yrs. I was not happy when the company switched to automatics, but over the yrs of different styles of trucks Volvo has the best mirror and transmission I've been behind the wheel of. Glad he gave you the opportunity to drive it. This is the second time you two followed this path to HDT. Hope the HDT group

As a class 8 driver for more than 30 years I fully understand why these trucks work so well for pulling rvs. That is a beautiful truck, but it would take me a while to get adjusted to an auto shift, I'd miss the other pedal and stick.

As a truck driver for fifty years I would say that’s the way to go. Right now a lot of trucks are being sold In California due to there ridicules emissions rules and used trucks are at an all time low. What’s cool with that truck is you can go on a week get away take the car and just use the truck to stay in. Take a look at some of the 120 inch sleepers on some of the trucks that Will really make your brain throb. Good luck. Great video.

If you are a little shorter in the leg than Todd you can get steps added to your truck or sent to you to add by RVHaulers with Gregg . He makes a step replacement that adds steps and makes it easier to climb in. At about 14:00 minutes the video titled "Never Rust Modular CANBed by RVHaulers" shows the steps. His channel also has a few years of RVHaulers to look at. Sheila there is a club of ladies that drive their RVHaulers, the videos are funny when the men admit they are not allowed to drive much anymore. The safety while towing 20k plus is a big reason to look at them. The truck can easily stop the 20K pound RV even if the trailer brakes failed. Be safe.

When I had my jayco I bought a cab over Mack restored it put in a air ride rear axel pulled that unit all over the country you can never have too much truck in the mountains! And you can buy a tractor with about 250K on it for a lot less than a new ton truck . I drove over the road for 30 years as a owner operator always felt good with no worries of a break down in that Mack .

I used to be a truck driver and I agree with everything said. I own a F350 diesel dually, and I rarely move my toyhauler, but if I were a full-timer, I’d definitely get a HDT. My fifthwheel Rv is 39’ long, and it’s already difficult to back it in my driveway with a pickup; with a semi tractor like this, the large wheelbase would definitely make it impossible to back my Rv into my driveway.

Two things from a professional heavy truck driver: 1) The newer Volvo prime movers are insanely comfortable to drive. Routinely drive 13hrs per day - effortless! 2) Both driver & passenger are sitting much higher up than F150 450 - the scenery is fantastic! And isn’t that why you’re doing it?

WE PREFER THE "HARDER TO GET TO LOCATIONS" AND FOUND BIG EQUIPMENT IS PROHIBITIVE. AS FOR NOW WE'RE STICKING WITH OUR JAYCO 25.5 REOK (10K GVW) AND MY 07 CHEVY 1 TON CREWCAB WITH DURAMAX POWER AND ALLISON TRANS. I MAKE AN HONEST 10.5 MPG'S AND BETTER DEPENDING ON CONDITIONS. THE BEST FUEL NUMBERS I'VE FOUND WITH HDT'S IS 7MPG'S. I STILL LOOK AT THE MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES.

Thank you for talking about owning a class #8 Semi versus a camper puller 1 Ton. I find with my 1971 SeaGrave Fire Engine 🚒 I can do the service on her easy, verses my 2021 Silverado Duramax
The 2 big Fuel filter and oil filter housings are under the engine. Just slide below Fire Engine and change them. The
8V-71 Detroit takes 7 gallons of oil. Never have had to bleed fuel ins on filter changes, just fill them up with clean Diesel one at a time, start engine, she has never sputtered or needed an air bleed. The 3 air filters are on top of the engine on the passenger side, very very easy to change. The stopping power with commercial air brakes pulling the lighter 5th wheel is amazing, and the Life on brakes using it to just pull RVs will go amazing longer. Plus with sleeper you basically have a mini RV in your cab, they are made for a trucker going cross country living in his truck. You did not show the porta potty on tour of cab, he had under bed in the sleeper, which is wonderful in itself. Being able to go as you drive down the road, then just take the holding tank off and dump in the toilet at any freeway rest stop. All the extra storage in and around the cab you are never getting that in a 1 Ton dually. With these newer class #8 semi's with the Automatic transmission, your wife or partner can easily learn to drive them. I have driven lots of FD engines with Allison push button auto trans you can just put in "D" and go. The newer Allison Automatics have a push button tranny check on the little screen. There is a book manual they give you that tells you every code fault, it tells you if the level of ATF is "OK" no need to even check the dip stick.
Do still love shifting my gears in the 71 SeaGrave I will admit. 😊😊😊😊 Love that "VOLVO" with extended single axil

Stopping in conventional truck is definitely my issue. Having driven both semi trucks up to Heavy Haul and 250, 350, 450 and 550 with flatbed goosenecks and 5th wheel trailers I know for a fact that the Semi is a much safer option. Controllability is another major concern for me as I’ve seen too many people load their trailer wrong and cause sever trailer sway and/or take too much weight off their steer axle.

Good luck getting into some campgrounds east of the Mississippi with that. Been there done that with a Kenworth T6 80 and a 35 foot fifth wheel. There were a number of campgrounds that didn’t even want us in with that heavy truck. It became soo much of a hassle that we purchased a 2022 F450 and never looked back. Just our perspective of that type of truck and camper combo. We were right at 65’ in length.

Interesting.... After 30 years of RV ownership from Bumper Pulls, Class A Motorhomes, and currently a 303 RLS Grand Design Fifth Wheel RV my first thought is as safe and wonderful this big rig is that the elephant in the room is space and campgrounds, and RV parks. We have traveled all over this great country several times and we live in the Sierra Mountains. Unless we were boon-docking in the desert where does the rig fit? How do you get to stay in an Oregon State Beach Campground or anywhere else beautiful Stanley Idaho another example. You are restricted to a few "hoity toity" RV Resorts surrounded by other RV's. How many times do you pull in someplace only to find that you have to turn around then what? In the western mountains and coast this rig a complete joke and not even close to practical at least not for a place you want to be. All of that smooth as silk ride and towing experience flys out the window when you arrive at a place you want to be only to find out it's not happening. Ridiculous to me but the beautiful part of living in America you get to decide.
