- Explore Remote Karijini: Hammersley Gorge, Mount Sheila & the Ghost Town of Wittenoom
This week, we venture into the remote northern and western regions of Karijini National Park, showcasing its lesser-visited but equally stunning locations. From the eerie history of Wittenoom to the breathtaking beauty of Hammersley Gorge and the heights of Mount Sheila, this episode is packed with adventure and incredible landscapes.
Our Journey Through Remote Karijini
1. Starting at Auski Roadhouse
We began by lowering our tire pressures and hitting the dirt roads from Auski Roadhouse.
A short drive later, the ominous ASBESTOS warning signs appeared, marking the proximity of the now-abandoned Wittenoom, a former asbestos mining town.
2. Wittenoom: A Town Lost to Time
Once a bustling mining town, Wittenoom is now riddled with asbestos contamination, as tailings were spread throughout the town and even used as yard decorations.
In 2022, the last resident was relocated, and the town’s entrances were blocked with dirt mounds and hazard warnings.
3. Hammersley Gorge: Karijini’s Gem
Known for its striking beauty, Hammersley Gorge is a must-see destination.
Spa Pool: The iconic photo spot, but we recommend exploring beyond it.
Night Adventures: We braved the gorge at night for unique night shots and swam to the gorge’s lower end for even more stunning views.
Rock Formations: The gorge's wavy, curved rocks-testaments to ancient geological forces-glow bright red at sunset, offering a surreal experience.
4. Mount Sheila: Views from Above
Our final stop was the challenging ascent to Mount Sheila, a former telecom tower site.
The sealed but steep road is accessible only to 4WDs, making it a thrilling climb.
The panoramic views from the summit are indescribable-a perfect spot to spend the night under the stars.
Why Explore Remote Karijini?
History and Adventure: Discover Wittenoom’s eerie past and challenge yourself on steep, rugged tracks.
Natural Beauty: Experience Hammersley Gorge’s hidden treasures beyond the Spa Pool.
Spectacular Views: End your journey at Mount Sheila, with breathtaking sunsets and stargazing opportunities.
Next week, we dive deeper into our journey through Western Australia, so don’t miss what’s coming!

Nice Vid, thanks for sharing.
45° is considered a 100% gradient. A stock Unimog will do 45° but little else can (your friends 4WD would not be able to do 45°).
So, 30° is a gradient of 66%, so pretty safe to say you still had plenty in reserve.
Incidentally, powering up your mog can be as easy as servicing/replacing the turbo and/or intercooler. Not too bad on price.
Yeah the Mog was holding it pretty well even while it had to lug our house up there as well. I don't know if we would be able to do 45° with all the weight in the back. Our Mog has the OM352A so turbo but not intercooled. We have looked into turbo and intercoolers but it does get pretty pricy pretty quick. If/when we build another Mog we will go another route 😉
Awesome camera and video work!
Thank you :)
Always love the star/night/fire shots, they're so unique and special. And it's always a laugh watching Jele sliding into cold water!!! Don't think I'd ever want to visit an asbestos mine/town/area - so you've saved me the bother, thanks. Having said that I believe my own town has low property value due to it's historical closeness to old tin mine workings!
Yeah those night shots are a bit of hit and miss. So much can go wrong from clouds showing up in the middle of the night or the gopro not charging off the powerbank, etc. Yeah she doesnt like it when I make her go swimming in cold water. Up until last year an old lady used to live there and you coild still drive through the town and into the gorge (some people even camp there....) but since the government has moved her out the blocked off all the entrances to the town and put up the signs that there are penalties for going there. We did block off any holes in the cab with tape and had the aircon on and windows up...
Looks awesome! Any plans to up the power in the old mog?
Thank you! No plans to get any major mods done on this Mog ;)
