You wanna know how to keep the blades sharp longer?
I've worked with steel for years as a fabricator, forger, heat treater and ironworker, some years back I got a brand new high end riding mower and the first time the blades needed sharpened (which was sooner than I thought it should be) I started on a bench grinder and then moved onto a file for the finish sharpening, from working with so many different grades of steel over the years I could tell by the sparks coming off of the bench grinder that the blades were made from a very good grade of steel, after getting all three blades as sharp as kitchen knives I put them back on the mower and proceeded to cut my 1½ acres of lawn that has no rocks or even exposed dirt anywhere, just green grass everywhere, I always mow the area around the front of the detached garage last which is where I keep the mower, when I was putting it away I noticed that the grass in that area didn't have the quality of cut like where I started on the other side of the garage, so I reached up under the deck (with the mower off of course) and felt the cutting edges of the blades and much to my dismay they were not only dull but they were rounded on the edges.
Well I'm not going to sharpen my blades half way through everytime I mow my lawn, so I took them back off and sharpened them again, then I proceeded to take a torch and heat the edge area of each one till they were cherry red and dunked them in a bucket of cold water, that did the trick, now they hold their edges throughout most of the summer before they need to be sharpened again.
Years ago the manufacturers probably did induction harden the blades in the area where they're sharpened, but all it took was one lawsuit from some idiot running over a pile of rocks and shattering a blade for them to leave that step out.
And if you do this you can forget about finishing them with a file, it'll just dance across the blade without cutting into it, that's another way you can tell it's quality steel to begin with.

Nice machine ! I worked as a mechanic at a small dealership, we had a similar machine, but with a wheel instead of the belt. However we often took our blades to an old guy in town. He had a machine from, it looked like the 30s or 40s. It took a while to set up, but once you did, you didn't touch the blade. The machine did everything. It got the blades so sharp it was scary.

Best thing to sharpen a blade with is a file, and take your time.
I don't know why people sharpen more than 3 inches from the end, beyond that the blade is really not cutting very much until the tip is dull. By that point the tip is tearing the end of the blades of grass and the tips turn brown.

A file would not be a logical choice in a production setting. This process doesn't overheat the blade like a typical bench grinder and maintains angle. The price is high but it's an effective way to do this when you have a pile of blades

@@nos9341 well, you sharpen them however far the OEM sharpens them. If you dont the customer is going to complain. And yes, newer blades do cut much farther down the blade.. you dont have to believe it. And sure, using a file will be fine if you have nothing else to do.. But when you have 100 mowers waiting to be tuned up and sharpened in the spring, that dont cut it lol..

I worked with my father at his lawn/garden sales/service business up until about 1970. We preached a few things about rotary mower blades. 1. Yeah, don't install them upside down because that will just beat your lawn into submission. 2. Do keep your blade sharp otherwise you will just be hammering the tops off your blades of grass and the sap will burn. 3. But the main thing was imparting the knowledge that it's only the outer tip of blade the does almost all your cutting. Think it's the whole 4-5 inch end? You would have to be mowing at about 25 MPH for that to be true. Consider that most rotaries run at 3,600 RPM (still true today, Bre?) Since the blade has two ends, that means 7,200 cuts per minute. If you are in very good shape and mow at 5MPH, you are moving at about 37 inches per minute. Divide that by the 7,200 cuts and you find that you forward progress is way less than a 64th of an inch per cut. Now you know why the tip of your blade is severely rounded off while just a few inches back, it still looks pretty good. If you really want a clean cut, the tip of the blade needs to be sharp.
Rather than throw blades away too early, sharpen that rounded radius. It will then be taking a slicing cut which is far better than the blunt-force trauma of a dulled tip.
Bre, I would have killed to have your blade machine.

Another tip after sharpening, clamp blade in vice. Take a hand flat file, a couple of strokes right on the Sharp edge. Dub it off about 1/32 of a inch, this helps it stay Sharp longer and reduces chipping from rocks. Been doing it for 35+ years.

I grind my blades with a portable disc grinder. Takes a lot of passes but the cutting edge is pretty good when done. Have to make sure you don't get the edge too hot and remove all the temper. I use a large file to finalize the edge and put a small flat on the knife edge as well. I also balance the blade when finished, and spray paint the blades so they don't rust while sitting waiting to be rotated to my mower deck. I also mow at 3 inches as to avoid blade contact with stones

I use an old 12" bench grinder that takes about 5 seconds to wind up to speed, and I have a rough wheel on one side and a finer one on the other... Bought it at a yard sale probably 30 years ago and it was old then.... $15 I believe... the grinding wheels cost more than I gave for the grinder... you'd have to be trying to stop that motor as you're grinding because it has very serious torque.... I never timed how long for a blade, but without a doubt it'd be on par with that sweet machine....

Your replicar there brings back pleasant childhood memories for me. When I would go visit my Grandparents in rural KY., usually for the summer back in the mid '60's. There was a local IGA Foodmart where they did their weekly grocery gittin'. One summer, the store owner had one of those cars on display with a huge sign that read it was to be given away in a random drawing & he would encourage the kiddos to enter their Parents/Grandparents name in the drawing for that Brand New, Sparkling "Tin Lizzy". The random drawing was to be held at the store on the Saturday Nite prior to the local kids going back to school that fall of 1965 or 1966. I must have put my Grandparents name in that box a bazillion times. But sadly, I didn't win it. Or if I did, my Grandparents never let on. But, every time I'd cram that slip of paper with their names printed on it into that entry box, I'd picture myself sportin' around their farm in my Tin Lizzy!!!

One thing I always do , especially at the start of the season , just before I cut the grass is I walk the lawn. I look for stones and rocks , rusty nails and bolts and anything that may cause damage or a costly repair. ( Gravel thrown from the car park is a particular bug bear of mine ) I will deal with any issues i find before mowing that area. Believe me its well worth it for just a little bit of time and diligence. I also do a good scan around any areas that i may be strimming. Best of luck with your channel and your excellent business.

I used to sharpen my blades to a actual knife edge, but after reading the Honda manual, they recommend a small flat on the cutting edge. So I've been draw-filing a tiny flat on the edge the last few times I've sharpened it, and it does seem to keep the stone chip damage to a minimum without affecting the cut quality. I've had to grind less to resharpen the blades as well.

As usual a good video. I learned decades ago that the “right” tool can make a big difference. However, I don’t sharpen enough blades to warrant one like yours. However, a right angle grinder can still make short work of it, especially if it is a 7” one and not a wimpy 4” job.

@@georgepruitt637 perhaps, but way back when I made my living making lots of little pieces of metal from bigger ones, I used the bigger grinders a lot. I never thought they were particularly dangerous. The handle with the trigger fit a gloved hand way better than the body of the little guys that doubles as the handle. But the biggest problem I have with the little guys, is the trigger locks on. Way more dangerous in my opinion. The trigger on the bigger ones, at least those that I used, was momentary contact, only as long as I held it on.

I’ve always been told that getting a blade too hot takes the temper out of the steel. If that’s so do these hold an edge for long after such a quick sharpening session or is it a higher temperature threshold to change the temper?

    • @stellarproductions8888
      @stellarproductions8888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

At the end of the day, what matters is, the thickness of steel, and the grade of steel. A residential mower uses a light blade, which is easier on lower horse power engines. Problem is, they don't hold their edge for long. Commercial mowers use heavier duty blades, larger engines can handle them, and they hold their edge for longer. In order to ruin Steele temper, you'd have to get it red hot at least with a torch. Grinding on a blade doesn't get it hot enough to do that so your fine.

Great clip, that grinder is fast and seems simple to use. Great for shops with many hands sharpening blades as everyone uses the hand held grinder differently. My only small criticism is that, like a chain saw chain, the most important detail is getting a square corner...that's the first point of contact as it needs to not have any rounded edge on the corner. Honda has a very good example in all their mower manuals.

Great job on the sharpening !
But what are you using for your balancing process ?
And how much time are you adding by the time you include the sharpening, and balancing process for both cutting edges, or are you showing 55 seconds for both edges of the blades ?
I would love to be able to sharpen blades in 55 seconds, but by the time we work to balance the blade, and do the touching up, as the balance process can take a little longer for us than 55 seconds, and we have a fairly decent sharpening system, and an extremely sensitive balancing tool as well !
Totally open to suggestions, as like you, we can do about 15-20 SETS of blades every day !
