scott pilgrim vs the world
Office Space and Fight Club.
Fun fact: the original Willy Wonka movie was sponsored by Quaker. Yes, the oatmeal company. They wanted to branch out to the candy business. Quaker actually gave us Nerds and Jawbreakers.
Thx for the fact I'll be sure to remember that
I'm not too sure if it was Quaker or no but a company even came up with the Wonka Bar for people to enjoy while watching the movie but due to bad choices in the formula for the chocolate, the candy would melt on the shelf so they pulled it
hahahahahahaha!
The irony being the historical association with Quakers and abolitionists while Wonka had a staff that he paid in literal beans
😂
Nice logo I love the rebirth logo
Disney never learns, releasing Hocus Pocus in July back in 1993 and now Haunted Mansion also in July of this year. It make sense to wait till the Halloween season to release these movies.
Hocos Pocus’s bombing contributed to Disney slowing down on making Live action movies. Hopefully Haunted Mansion’s failure will do the same, but I doubt it
Well TBF, the Nightmare Before Christmas came out during Halloween of '93 and Hocus Pocus didn't want to compete with it.
@rbj8387 I was about to say the exact same thing. No Halloween-themed movie would have stood a chance that year, with all the attention Nightmare got.
@rbj8387 Honestly, I don't remember The Nightmare Before Christmas being a huge phenomenon at release. I was only 6 at the time, but I watched it and kind of enjoyed it.
What REALLY confused me was when I was 17, and suddenly, EVERYONE was a huge fan of that movie I watched 11 years ago and forgot about.
@@wynonasbigbrowndragon6121 It was a critical hit and moderate financial success as well, making $50 million on a $24 million budget. I'm not claiming it was Lion King or Frozen levels of success, but it was a hit, and regardless I can understand why Hocus Pocus didn't want to try to compete with another Halloween movie in October. My issue is why not release the film in September instead of July? That'd be close enough to Halloween time to feel more appropriate.
The Shawshank Redemption is one of those classic movies that came out at the wrong time. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and didn't win any.
And now it's rightfully regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. Great writing, great directing and great performances. Virtually every actor gets a chance to shine.
Yeah, 1994 was a great year for movies
Oscars are won within the Academy through backroom handshakes and back scratching. The powers that be gave everything to Gump that years. Gump is a decent film, but no where near the masterpiece that Shawshank is. Besides, "Being There" is the better version of Gump if you're a movie purist and just want the story.
It is insane to me that labyrinth did so poorly at the time of release. That movie was such a huge part of my childhood. My nightmares were plagued with head-switching bird puppets and we played “Dance Magic Baby” at my first boy/girl party as a tween. It was THE movie. Love that film, and I’ve always assumed it was immediately appreciated.
Same 🎉
I mean it's shit.
"Smell bad"😅
Love Bowie as the Goblin King
I’ve never understood how The Thing was a failure. It’s phenomenal. And it holds up til this day.
It was to scary, people left the theaters. It was a common joke that by the end the theater would be empty
Such a great movie. Holds up well even today when many old sci fi movies dont
Nah, we were right in 1982. It was a garbage movie with some of the worst special effects ever put to film. How people today idolize it is beyond comprehension.
It was unfortunate timing for the release. The Thing came out shortly after the beloved family movie ET and audiences wanted more cute, family friendly aliens. Not horrific aliens that provided some phenomenal body horror.
@@kevinth66The special effects were completely great for 1982. There are movies today with horrid CGi that fail too look realistic.
The film was also a brilliant display of showing paranoia & distrust increasing in a situation where nobody can be trusted, & even themselves. These characters make realistic & smart decisions for a situation where they can’t identify the threat that’s amongst them.
It’s special effects isn’t what makes the film great.
One of the biggest joys of my life is seeing Clue get the recognition I thought it always deserved. When I was a kid I felt like I was the only one who knew about it.
It's insane how half of these are some of my favorite movies ever (especially the Thing! and the Rocky Horror Picture Show). Honestly I thank my parents for showing most of them to me!
"Clue" has got to be the BEST movie based on a board game ever, other than "Jumanji", naturally. I love all the performances, wacky plot, and multiple endings.
___Hell yes! I'd say it's better than the 'Jumanji' films. It paved the way for them. (I 🖤 Leslie Ann Warren.)
Pretty sure Jumanji wasn’t originally based on a real board game, it was a fictional game within the movie.
What about battleship
Jumanji's based off a book
Clue was better than Jumanji
The Shawshank Redemption really is the best example of this, as it is literally one of the best movies ever made, despite how it performed in the box office.
I agree completely but I wouldn’t say it has a “cult following”. Its greatness has gained wide recognition.
Strange . Labyrinth is an masterpiece. It was great around Europe, why failed in US... it's like a psychedelic Alice in Wonderland
The fact both Blade Runner and 2049 both are now considered cult classics is crazy. Both excellent in their own right
i very much disagree about 2049, and I can understand why the original had problems. The announcer is correct, the pacing was terrible.
I eventually buckled after a long time of putting it off and watched the original Bladerunner some years ago, I am sorry to whoever likes that movie but it was so boring to me like wow I can't believe people consider it a "classic"
20. Labyrinth (1986)
19. Hocus Pocus (1993)
18. Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
17. Dredd (2012)
16. Brazil (1985)
15. Children of Men (2006)
14. Clue (1985)
13. Dazed and Confused (1993)
12. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
11. Heathers (1989)
10. Donnie Darko (2001)
9. Mulholland Drive (2001)
8. The Iron Giant (1999)
7. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
6. Office Space (1999)
5. Fight Club (1999)
4. The Thing (1982)
3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
2. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
1. Blade Runner (1982)
Shawshank Redemption is one of the finest films of all time. Morgan Freeman's narration was phenomenal.
And his monologue during Red’s last parole hearing was even better.
Children of Men absolutely blew my mind. I bought it on dvd because I wanted to see those long shots over and over. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out
I would call Clue's 3 different ending as brilliant instead of gimmicky. It caused a lot of talking about it when people tried to compare their experiences yet couldn't agree on the ending. No other movie has done the same since, the closest being the one marvel movie with different after-the-credits scenes.
Thts literally a gimmick
Clue is my favorite movie and an all time gem of a classic
I’ve seen “Labyrinth” in the theater during its original run. I loved it as charming fantasy tale and I fallen in lifetime love for Jennifer Connelly 💙 Great movie.
too bad she lost all of her curves in later years
@@scottdoesntmatter4409meh, you've also lost all your muscle mass and your penis size, so it's all good.
I know it would have been unfair to have two movies by the same director, but I would have loved to see Big Trouble in Little China on this list.
I was about to mention it. Glad to see I didn’t have to scroll down to far to see your post.
Such an underappreciated movie. I'm also surprised "Escape From New York" didn't get mentioned either.
@@atomicgator5207Escape from New York was successful
The comedian Tony Baker loves this movie!
Labyrinth made me an even bigger fan of David Bowie than I was at the time. Willy Wonka is one of my childhood favorites. A lot of these are among the best films ever made
"Heathers" was well ahead of its time. Creating dark teen comedies certainly runs in the family, since the screenwriter, Daniel Waters, is the brother of "Mean Girls" director, Mark Waters.
"how very"
@@DFC667,
___What?
Totally I watched and I was like uhm no wonder this flopped when it came out.
Scott pilgrim is awesome
True yup
It’s one of my favorite movies! So so funny!!
We're getting a Scott Pilgrim anime series coming to Netflix Netflix this year I hope the series is good for the Scott Pilgrim fans of the game? 🙂😀😃
Honestly didn't know it bombed.
Honorable mention for Near Dark. My brother introduced it to me after he discovered it. It became an instant classic for me. He passed away in February 2021. Whenever I watch Near Dark now, it means a little more to me.
Damn that's a blast from the past I haven't seen in decades
didn't like the mechanism for becoming or leaving the vampire state, it was too easy
@scottdoesntmatter4409 Simple blood transfusion was a little too easy.
not blood transfusion, simple blood INGESTION @@johneoff707
I'm disappointed that speed racer didn't make the cut because it's such a good movie
You missed UHF, weird Al's movie from 89. It did so bad that its partially responsible for Orion Pictures going out of business. Very few VHS copies were sold and they were worth a lot, until the DVD was released in 2003, and it was on the top 10 DVD sales list, surprising EVERYONE.
Supplies!
Fun Fact about #19:
There was an Original Song made for the end credits called Almost Unreal performed by Roxette, due to time contraints and production shift going from made for TV Movie to Cinema, it got switched to another Disney feature starring Bob Hopkins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper.😅
Super Mario Bross live action movie did not diserve Almost Unreal.
I think The Warriors from 1979 should be in this list. Extremely stylish for its time.
One of my favorites
Warriors come out and playyaa.
How many people in here fell in love with Jennifer Connolly after watching labyrinth like I did? And children of men is a freaking bad ass movie
I did ❤❤

@@redheadedduck8511 dude! I know right
I was working at a video store when the Shawshank Redemption came out, and I knew nothing about it. But EVERY SINGLE person who I asked "did you enjoy your movie?" when they returned a rental copy of it, absolutely RAVED about it.
I think it's the only movie I never heard ANYONE give a bad or lukewarm response to.
I would also say Xanadu gained a cult following too mainly towards fans of Olivia Newton John, Greek Mythology, or part of the LGBTQ community. Especially when the soundtrack and the broadway show were really successful. Even Pedro Pascal admits he listened to the soundtrack when shooting the Last of Us TV show.
Couldn’t understand blade runner as a kid so I hated it. Now, as an adult, it’s one of the greatest movies of all time
"I've seen things, you people wouldn't believe, hmmm.
... attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I've watched see Beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate.
All those moments, will be lost in time like tears in rain..."

What about A Christmas Story? A Thanksgiving 1983 box office disappointment, but repeated (endless!) cable showings made it a beloved holiday classic, almost as much so as It's A Wonderful Life (which should ALSO be on this list!!)
Saw that in the theater as a kid. We were raving about it afterward to friends.
I don't know if Christmas Story qualifies as a cult classic.
Oh yeah, that is a good point. It's a Wonderful Life received some bad reviews too, (although nominated for best pic) and did not become a Christmas viewing staple for decades when tv stations finally began showing it during holidays (starting in 1974).
AChristmas Story was considered a good 'small film' that did not perform well at box office in 1983. It was not officially revived to 'classic marathon' viewing status on TNT until 1997.
Somewhat unrelated since it was always successful (despite an odd summer release) Miracle on 34th Street (B & W version) is still my all time, most watched, Christmas favorite. I watch the first 40 minutes or so on Thanksgiving Day (when Miracle begins at the Macy's Parade) and watch the remaining hour on Christmas Eve. Tradition.
Scott Pilgrim was critically underrated. Even now, in this top ten video, it is still being underrated... It is a gem of a movie, and it deserves better.
Hopefully, down the line, this list will be revisited, and include the likes of Strange Days, Dark City, and Jennifer's Body. These 3 films deserve so much more love.
Strange Days is a seriously under-rated movie.
I have got to see Dark City again. I've been reminded how some believe it was (and before) better than The Matrix.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: "Shock Treatment" was marketed as the sequel to Rocky Horror, and was clearly hoping to follow in the cult-classic footsteps, but the work "marketed" might be a bit of an overstatement. It was only ever released as a midnight showing on Halloween, never getting a wide theatrical release. As a result, many people to this day have never even heard of the movie, outside of the Rocky Horror fandom. Fortunately, the fandom has found love for the movie, and it has been performed as a double feature alongside Rocky Horror by several shadowcasts.
We were OBSESSED with Labyrinth when I was in grade school. We thought David Bowie was soooooo HOT! LOL
Phantom of The Paradise.
It bombed in the box office back in 1974 and it has a cult following.
It Predates Rocky Horror by one year.
Fight club was one of the greatest movies ever because of the twist and the acting in my opinion
Even the guy who made the Fight Club novel, loved the film version better and tries to pretend his "embarrassing" book never existed.
The worst thing about Fight Club was the video game.
That is a great twist.
An excellent list. Brazil a mind blowing masterpiece. The Thing another fantastic sci-horror masterpiece
Shawshank now considered to be one of the best of all Time. Blade Runner one of the most influential films of all time, but the original wasn’t great. Office Space was hilarious. Rocky Horror the ultimate cult classic.
In 1986 I watched Big Trouble in Little China and Labyrinth back to back at the age of 7 at a movie theater by myself (gotta love the 80s) and to this day remains my favorite and most important movie experience.
My favorite fact about "Labyrinth" came from a documentary I saw somewhere that showed the juggling expert who's arm was stuck UNDER Bowie's arm (and through his costume) so he could do the fancy crystal ball trick... acting is such a fascinating profession, when you see all the things actors CAN'T do, so they hire 'helpers' to do it for them.
Also, The Big Lebowski (1998) definitely deserves a big mention or to be added to this list.
It made e times it budget, now exactly a bomb
I’m surprised Jennifer’s Body didn’t make it on the list.
Whoever decided to leave Jennifer's Body off the list:
I'll cut of his nut-sack, and nail it to my door! Like... One of those lion door-knockers rich folks got! That. Will. Be. His. Balls!
For the next list, we need Repo!, The Genetic Opera. The fandom is devoted, if sparse.
You could say that even though these movies didn't stand at the box office, they still stood the test of time or at least most of them did.
More box office bombs that became cult classics: Speed Racer, Swiss Army Man, and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was and is still one of my fave cult classic films. I'm still hankering to watch Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, tho.
I'm surprised they didn't put "It's a Wonderful Life" on here. As much as it's viewed as a Christmas Classic these days, it bombed so hard back in the day that the studio let it go into the public domain.
I love Hocus Pocus (1993) So much. I love watching it a lot during October every year. I'm glad it got a Cult Following. I've watch it a lot when I was a kid and I still watch it this day. Happy 30 Years for, "It Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus".
"Come little children I'll take thee away"
I was a couple years to old to admit I liked this movie when it came out but I can admit it now. It's one of my favorite non horror Halloween movies
@@gothgirl4evr881 It made a TCM Book called, "Fright Favorites" by author, David J.Skal. he put Hocus Pocus (1993) in the book. like all of us, A lot of great story about the movie.
When i first seen Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas in the theater back in 1998, i knew it had " cult classic" written all over it.
The King of Comedy tanked when it first came out but is considered a masterpiece as the years gone on
Why "Big Trouble in Little China" didn't get into this list?
It is a classic and I am pretty sure that flopped at box office!
Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorite movies. Those that saw it, loved it. The problem was, too many people opted to see the Expendables instead.
I think you missed a very big one. Highlander. It only made $12 million on a $19 Million budget. When it finally got traction it rose to cult status and spawned more movies and several television series. Did not see any other entry on your list come even close to this. This should have been number one.
Brazil is my absolute favourite movie narrowly beating The Maltese Falcon and The City of Lost Children. The tune is one of my most common earworms and I whistled it on the way home from Aldi tonight. I'm Australian BTW.
I watched Scott Pilgrim in theaters but I'm a video game nerd so I'm a bit bias. Lol I can't wait for the Anime version to come out, it looks very promising.
One notable movie missing: *Transformers: The Movie* from 1986. It bombed at the box office, but home video helped make it a cult classic.
Dredd is criminally underrated!! The movie should be one of the staples for great comic book movies. It is for me anyways.
Pitch Black has also become a cult classic and spawned 2 sequels that are equally great.
John Carter is probably the biggest "bomb", but it's definitely a stellar movie. It definitely became a cult classic.
There's also Titan A.E., such an underrated movie when it was released.
Every one of those was great 👍
Another cult classic? Cloud Atlas.
I love Clue, Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd are always so fun to watch.
Clue seems perfect for a DVD edition as you can have all three ending in the extras😊
You really can't go wrong with Tim Curry or Christopher Llyod
Idk why or how i stumbled on rocky horror but it is my all time favorite cult classic. My second favorite is Scott pilgrim 💖
Have you ever been to a live showing or are you still a virgin bc you really haven't experienced it until you've seen it live.
"Don't dream it...Be it"
I'm too young to have attended the theatrical run of Clue. Is it true that which of the 3 endings any given viewer saw was random, though? And that they had no way of knowing the gimmick except word of mouth?
Hard to believe anyone got a whole critical about something kept secret from them. That's unless maybe members of different audiences said it was annoying when they found out?
I love Scott Pilgrim! I've watched that movie so many times! 😂
One of my favorites that is a cult classic is Super Troopers.
I saw Hocus Pocus at the theater!! Dazed and Confused is a classic!! My kids and I enjoy watching Clue and Heather's is where I got a crush on Christian Slater, haha! We also enjoy Donnie Darko. Fight Club also great, especially with the twist ending!
I own them both on BluRay and agree they are both great movies.
Haha I was literally a female version of Slater in 10th and 11th grade.
This is one of my favorite movies and has a totally awesome soundtrack
2:57 downtown honesdale,Pa , the whole thing was filmed in Wayne county pa
How do you not, at the least, honorable mention Starship Troopers?
My mom loved The Labyrinth, we had it on VHS 😂
I like that one as well. I'm glad Hulu has it to watch.
clue has to be one of my all time fav movie
You know a film has such a huge cult following when it is given both a fun video game and an upcoming anime series. Talking about Scott Pilgrim
Even though this video listed 20 movies instead of 10, it could have had some honorable mentions. It did mention "The Wizard of Oz" during "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", but a couple of other movies that have become cult clasics are "It's a Wonderful Life" and "The Princess Bride."
Dazed and Confused is such a fun film, it's not particularly funny, I didn't laugh much at all but it's so jovial and visually stunning you just want to jump through the screen and live in it, the main characters think their lives are crappy and boring but they're having the kind of childhood experiences 90% of the world wish they could have
Me and my family saw The Iron the weekend it came out. It was my dad's idea to go, since it had the 50s aesthetic (he grew up in the 50s and 60s). I remember asking him questions if his school ever did stuff like what Hogarth's school did in the movie, and my dad said "pretty much :)". I was a curious little kiddo. I ended up absolutely adoring the movie.
I also quote it all the time- "Screw our country; I want to live!"
Home videos literally changed the trajectory of how so many of these film were judged later . It makes me wonder how many films today don’t get that chance
I love how it opened with Tim Curry followed by Tim Curry
That's funny I thought the exact same thing
I saw "Mulholland Drive," "Shawshank Redemption," "Dazed & Confused," "Heathers," and "Donnie Darko" in regular movie theaters.
I saw "Rocky Horror" years after it opened, in a theater at midnight.
I saw "Brazil" when I was a student as part of a film festival.
I saw Scott Pilgrim vs the World" with our movie club.
I rented "Wet Hot American Summer."
[BTW, "Dredd" --with the character called "Judge Dredd" -- rips off the name of the character "Judge Dread" from 3 songs recorded by Prince Buster in the late 1960s.]
Big trouble in little China wasn’t mentioned at all.! Yet it is one of the best cult classics out there.!
1:38 It became my tradition when I came home the night of my final “Trick or Treating”, I was exhausted and turned on the TV. Low and behold Hocus Pocus was there, I didn’t change the channel I just watched it. And as I did I thought to myself this could be my new tradition to replace “Trick or Treating” until I have a kid.
am i the only one that loved 95 Judge Dredd a lot more than its 2012 remake? i enjoy rewatching both(a lot closer than Total Recall for example) but original has a soft spot in my ticker - guilty pleassure movie material(along with Shawshank and Fight Club from this list)
The Wachowskis' "Speed Racer" (2008) is another one I'd include.
Saw Rocky Horror Picture Show in the theater when it first came out. But I knew the play. And I love Clue too.
I beg to differ in your assertion that Willy Wonka had a rebirth on tv in the 80's - it was a staple of holiday movies (either Christmas or Easter) shown on tv by the mid-to-late 70's.
Don’t forget the Lords of Flatbush, American Graffiti, Cooley High and Valley of the Dolls.
I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show in the theater. I knew the musical so I knew what to expect. Love it. Also love Clue.
I loved the shawshank redemption, I can't believe it's nearly 30 years old. 😂😂😂
Funny because I liked most of these when I saw them when they first came out. I generally tend to enjoy "weirder" movies that become cult classics. A few of these I consider some of my fave movies (especially The Thing).
I'm surprised that The Rage Carrie 2 isn't on this list directed by Katt Shea. 🤔 I love The Rage Carrie 2. I really love the themes of the movie. The themes represent loneliness, isolation, social acceptance, depression, desperation, abandonment, and hopelessness which established the personality of Rachel Lang. Emily Bergl did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Rachel Lang as she put tons of emotion and depth into her role. To me the movie really speaks out a personal message as it shows severe or extreme consequences and circumstances of your actions. Also the concept was more brutal, explicit, graphic, and violent 😰😱 than Carrie (1976). It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍👍😎💯
I have the BluRay edition at home, but I’ve had no time to watch it. I still agree with everything you said about it.
Facts . I love the Rage Carrie 2
Never seen it, but my Favorite band has a song on the soundtrack. Die With Me by Type O Negative. Awesome song.
@@Jeremiah_Rivers76The Rage Carrie 2 is one of those movies that you can not possibly forget as it's just so memorable and well-known. It is one of Katt Shea best and finest work in cinema as it addresses how difficult it is to be a young woman today. It is such a true blue modern gem. When it was first released it received negative reviews which totally confused me 😕🤔 but despite that I hold it very close to my heart as I feel it was compared unfavorably to the original rather than taken it's own merit and I even preferring it to the original. The Rage Carrie 2 was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated such as the concept and theme. Of course it's not similar to the original which I really love as it's offering a different perspective and perception of real life issues. The movie was just constructed perfectly from the very beginning to the end. They acknowledge it as a tragic love story and for the 20th anniversary of the film Scream Factory Blu-Ray released a Collector's Edition as it's finally getting the recognition and credibility it deserves as critics and audiences are fully understanding and comprehending the interpretation of the story.😍😎👍💯

Death to Smoochy is a film that is directed by Danny Devito, stars Robin Williams and still flopped at the box office. Years later, it gained a cult following.
Remember the cars in the parking lots of a movie place showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Don't know if it was because it had Denton Chapel at the start and that was Denton (TX), because it was a college town, or something else. This was a day screening and probably not a cosplay factor.
Saw Rocky Horror multiple times at the theater, but none of the others. Strange.
What is a bad movie that people say is underrated or overlooked?
Titan A.E. . The whole thing feels rushed and I just don't see the appeal. It's almost like some people just automatically think every animated movie that bombed spectacularly is actually a hidden gem. Atlantis and The Iron Giant are the only two cases. Then we have The Good Dinosaur and Sinbad
I saw Dredd at the Cinema. Having said that I was already aware of the Comic Book as I am from the UK. Karl Urban NAILED that performance. As for Blade Runner I saw both it and the Special Edition released years later at the cinema.
Clue, Scott Pilgrim, Heathers, Shawshank, RHPS, and Willy Wonka are some of the best films ever. ❤❤
Brazil was one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen in the theater. I also saw Mulholland Drive in the theater. It was also quite strong.
love office space, gary cole is great, a gem in every movie he is in
Clue is one of my FAVORITES!!
Super suprised about labyrinth..its the movie that made me love bowie💜
Most of these blow my mind that they didn't do well in theaters. I know my family, when I was young, didn't go to the theater much. My dad would only go to the drive-in theater, so we mostly only got to watch movies that came out at the drive-in. But, most of these I love and watch on television or cable TV.
Blade Runner is simply one of the greatest movies ever. A masterpiece in all regards. And that scene when Rachel realized she’s not a human is just pure cinema magic.
