How ‘Labyrinth’ Went from Box Office Bomb to Cult Classic

  • If you grew up watching “Sesame Street,” you know Jim Henson’s characters well. The late puppeteer brought Kermit and Ernie and so many others to life before he went on to create “The Muppet Show” and “Fraggle Rock.” But as his son Brian Henson tells us, the legendary artist and performer didn’t set out to just entertain kids. He wanted his work to reach a wider audience. Which is why Henson poured his creativity into directing the 1986 film “Labyrinth.” “Star Wars” creator George Lucas produced, and David Bowie starred in the musical fantasy. Despite all the talent involved, “Labyrinth” bombed at the box office. But, today, it’s a cult classic. Here’s why.

Jim did more to fight Racism than He is appreciated for. In an entirely white area, the only thing about people of color is what racist generations before us told us. But seeing Black and hispanic children interating with the Muppets was eye and heart-opening. This boy or girl was just a kid. Like me.
Also, I saw Labyrinth in theater and loved it instantly.

It blows my mind to see this....that this movie that shaped part of me and had such a huge impact on my life was a box office failure. I just don’t understand how such a wonderful piece of art could’ve been disregarded when it was in theaters. My science teacher introduced this film to me...and the rest of the class. He had an old reel to reel and would bring new movies in at the end of the year as a treat for his students. Since then I’ve had this movie on laser disc, vhs, dvd and now, Blu-ray. It’s still one of my favorite movies. 🥰💕

Vam gogh never how influential and celebrated his work was.
Jim henson took childrens entertainment by storm and brought a fun way for children to learn things.
He tried to expand his craft, to break the perception of his work as only childrens entertainment.
That was something that was not going to be easy to change. And now years after his death it finally got the recognition it deserves.
Although i would say that pupetry lost its biggest proponent and pusher when jim died.
Its been years since ive seen puppets in the main spotlight, but thanks to jim they are accepted as a true medium.
I think jim would love that.

Very adult oriented, even if one would say "its for kids" but the show was clearly filled with comentary for adults. I enjoyed Dinosaurs as a kid, but when I watch some episodes now as an adult, I find a whole new appreciation for the show.

Did they really answer the question though? I just watched the whole video and I'm still not sure why it suddenly started developing a cult following.

Because it’s a freaking awesome movie and ppl who paid for movies in the 80’s were asshats and preppy buttwads.
      *in my opinion*

This is perfect Since I'm having an 80's bash with a small group of 6 and Mr Brian Henson said it perfectly puppets are not for kids yet it brings the kid in all of us

I watched that movie before I knew who David Bowie was. around the early 2000 an a children's tv channel. I was blown away and it stuck into my head for years. But I never heard about that movie again. Until I found the DVD around 7 years later on a goth/punk mail-order magazine...😅😅😅

This is so weird, I was just watching your German Castle video and in my mind I was picturing the little worm @1:51 saying "Castle" and then this video plays next. what are the odds?
