The Mountain Bike Skills Algorithm | Your Missing Link to Progress your MTB-Skills FASTER!

- Learning Mountain Bike Skills CAN be really easy - if you know in which order to learn and practice! This Mountain Bike Skills Algorithm will allow you to build a rock solid MTB-Skill Foundation vs. building your skills on Quicksand! Work with my online FUNdamentals course to build a solid foundation here: 👉 roxybike.podia...
Unfortunately, many mountain bikers decide to maneuver themselves into a dead end, by "just riding" and practicing the "cool" skills. At 12:01 you will find out one of the most common errors mountain bikers commit - and this error limits many from progressing!
In this tutorial I am sharing my MTB-Skills Algorithm or Mountain Bike Skills Pyramid, which I have developed in cooperation with my colleague Berni and in exchange with other international coaches, instructors and mentors.
😍 I really hope I can help many riders, instructors and mtb parents/mentors to accelerate their and their students'mountain bike skills learning journey - because life is too short to hit dead ends, to crash and to form compensatory habits!
Feel free to use the algorithm, share the video with friends and ask questions in the comment section below!! Let's advance this awesome sport together!!
If you would, however, like to publish, re-use parts of the algorithm or all of it: please ask me for written permission, first.

Hi Roxy, these are exactly the same foundations & fundamentals needed for skiing.
I'd bet that you're a wicked skier (or boarder).
Thanks for your instruction, making us all safer so that we can enjoy the sports more :))))
Thank you so much. How interesting. My mom used to be a ski and surf instructor 😊 But I like warm weather too much 🤣
This is fast becoming my favorite MTB channel. I’m a fencing coach turned mountain biker, and I really enjoy Roxy’s perspectives on learning, and all her great technical instruction.
Thank you so much, Michael!!
OMG! This is brilliant. I love how you are so specific about the skills in the levels of the pyramid. This makes so much sense. I'm buying you a coffee, right now!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and the coffee 😍😍
So so Valuable. Thank you so much for posting this. I have known the pyramid concept for a long time. Used in businesses. Used it in my personal life And have tried to incorporate it into my personal learning of mountain biking.
I see so many people just jump on the bike and run out and attack a trail that is way beyond their capabilities. And I don’t see anybody telling them that they need to get the basics first. I made a list of basics for myself and decided that I was not going back on mountain biking trails until I had those basics down. Some of them are the same as yours but you’ve added some that I hadn’t thought about, so very grateful for those because they are now going on my list to be learned before I attempt to progress on a higher level, as you mentioned. Because you are 100% correct it is a lot more fun to learn how to Bunnyhop your bike, then it is to gain better balance, flexibility, coordination, brake control,,, etc.
If I ever come to your country, or you ever come to mine, I want a month of lessons. Maybe more. Thank you again.
Will buy you a coffee as soon I figure out how.
Hi Devo, thank you so so much for this great comment, so happy my video and coaching concept resonates with you.
I totally agree. I have to admit I think actually MOST people just jump on the bike and attack trails and skills WAY beyond their capabilities- and very often they allow their ego to decide which skills they need to learn 😊
So good to hear you now have a clearer concept of your learning order.

This pyramid looks like it took years and years to develop, I love how you have video's on basically all the core fundamental skills! I just started watching your video's roxy and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon, its very very easy to understand everything I learn from all of your video's.
Thank you, Eric. It absolutely did. It’s YEARS of working with riders of all levels and years of research and cooperation with some of the leading coaches and riders of the world which allowed us to develop it.
Of course, as I don’t earn money with TH-cam, I will never share ALL the fundamentals here on YT.
However, if you’d like to work with my proven drills and get all my fundamentals in a methodical manner, then you’ll find them on www.Roxybike-coaching.com - where you will also find a Trackstand course for free.
Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your appreciation, Eric. Sending my gratitude!

Best video on skills progression on the internet!
Thank you so so so much, Truly appreciate your comment! Sending much gratitude 🙏🤩🥰
When I first watched this video, I grabbed pen and paper and started taking notes! This paper with your skills pyramid is tacked up at my desk. It is a great reminder of what skill set is most important--and foundational--to mountain biking and has really served to change my focus on my progression. I wonder if anyone else has done the same thing?
There is sure a lot of content on TH-cam showing how to do the sexy skills like drops, hops, manuals ect... but that definitly isn't where to start and I'm not there yet in my development which is awesome because this algorithm informs me about how to get there properly and what I need to have dialed before I take the next step up. When I ride, I go through a mental checklist that starts with the foundation level, then the second level skills, and into the third which is where I am now. I am grateful to you Roxy for sharing this knowledge and the rest of the extensive collection of tutorials you have provided. It has really helped me become a competant and confident rider.
After all, not crashing is pretty darn sexy. 😍
OH YES - not crashing is the sexiest thing ever! When I give a coaching and we take the skills to the trails, I always tell my students: if you want to impress me, then clearly TELL ME if you feel insecure and don't feel ready to ride a section. Acknowledging this and openly stating this is MUCH braver (and sexier) than letting your ego rule you, and risking a crash. And then we progress in a safe manner and *knock on wood* - I haven't had serious crashes in my coachings and clinics in YEARS.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts here and I know, if I would've found this pyramid when I started riding, I would've done the same as you did. It would have spared me many years of consolidating my errors by practicing the "sexy" skills without having a solid foundation.
And by sharing my knowledge, I just hope that more people will do it like you are doing, to spare them what I did - hehe.
THANK YOU for your comment, Christopher and for your support on Patreon. It enables me to keep doing these videos.

Hi Roxy, I've just found your channel. From someone who was once a club volleyball coach, I must say that this video was easily one of the most informative and on point regarding skills development for mountain biking. Thank You for your time making all these videos.

Roxy is so good at putting things into perspective. Last year mountain biking was so much fun but I learned that I still had alot to learn about how to feel comfortable. I'm now recovering after a non MTB injury so mobility is my main focus. Back to basics for me. I'm loving it because I can take my time, get my confidence back, and improve my skills. Thanks Roxy !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot! So happy you’re back after your injury! Get well soon! ❤️🩹
This is an outstanding breakdown of how to think about progression. Renewing with RLC; cup of coffee purchased; bike clinic in Mallorca added to list of future adventures.
😍😘😍🥰🥰 Thanks so so so much, Russ!!
I just found your channel. Right away, I decided you'll be my coach 😉😊👍🏼
Thanks a lot!

Thank you for another great video. The manner in which you teach mountain biking skills, as well as life skills, is brilliant. Your lessons are precise and comprehensive. They exhibit a high degree of clarity and compassion. They make perfect sense.
I love your mind. You are a very special person. May God bless you and all you do.
Thank you so so much for your priceless and lovely words. Truly appreciate the time you took. 😍🥰
Yowser awesome explanation. Mind blown. Thanks you.
Thank you, Lisa. Very grateful to hear it resonates and grateful for the time you took to share your appreciation!
Trackstand is very useful when you are stuck in traffic
True - And on every trail! It’s an essential skill that few riders master but actually every skilled rider needs.
Thank you, Roxy, I plan on checking out your program. I am new to mtn biking and want to learn technical skills so they are ingrained.
Awesome, Troy. I am currently working on an English online coaching platform. It will be available ASAP :-) Will post it here, soon!
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Awesome! thank you! I lived in Wurzburg, Germany, many years ago (1988-91), but my German ist nicht sehr gut. :)
This video does a great job in explaining a lot of your phrases like regress to progress. It also makes a lot of sense in general. Keep up the his work!
¡Absolutamente genial! ¡Lástima que no podamos vernos en persona para seguir tus magníficas sesiones!
Lástima. Gracias por tu comentario 😍
Great video!👍 Very informative and entertaining video thank you!❤️🏴
Thank you for taking me back to the basics. Just discovered your channel and now a subscriber. Now I know what I need to work on. Everything you said about starting at the top is true about me.. poor foundation. I have ingrained those bad habits you’re talking about and will use this season to correct all my bad forms and habits. I see a lot of good riders on TH-cam but they don’t know how to teach like you do. Thank you for making this available.
Thank you ever so much, Willie. My heart is filled with gratitude about your appreciation flowing through your letters!
Another excellent video along your learning continuum.
I am glad you built the skills pyramid. It identifies and organizes the skills to build from in a visual format which is easy to understand, and follow.
You mention strength and flexibility at the beginning and I think they would be really worth adding to the diagram too. For me those are the absolute keys.
Flexibility most of all, because whilst to a degree strength will be build as you practice, flexibility only comes with deliberate off bike work.
I only really progressed at bunny’s and manuals once I sorted out my hip hinge. That also stopped me repeatedly straining my back.
Totally agree!!
that’s why I have an online flexibility course specifically designed for mountain bikers. 😍
roxybikeonline.podia.com/gravity-yoga-targeted-flexibility-training-for-mountain-bikers
That’s why I mention it, too. The diagram is only about skills though - as there are 5 factors to every skill:
strength, flexibility, mindset, coordination and the skill itself. So if I added these to the diagram, too, they would have to be everywhere 😊😊 that’s why the diagram only focuses on the skill aspect 😊 (because, just as you are correctly pointing out - without hip hinge no progress. And the hip hinge is where? Exactly - right at the bottom of the pyramid 😊)
So good to hear you’ve done the work and feel a difference! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing the pyramid. Sounds like I should leave my manual machine alone while I work on my track stand.
Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment 😍
Sounds like a great plan 🤩🥳

Thanks!
thanks for this global overview. nice talk, Roxy.
Thank you, Patrick!
I love this approach to improving one's riding. Despite already considering myself an intermediate rider, I have spent the last 4 months working on level 1 of your pyramid and have seen great improvement in my riding.
I am now working on level 2 as well. I am wondering what you would consider "slow speed skills." I assume something like ratchet pedaling would be one. Are there other slow speed skills you recommend working on? Do you have any videos that address them? Thanks!
Hey Jeffrey, thanks so much for commenting. Agree so much, when I work with advanced riders and pros, we work on level 1,2 and 3 regularly, as only small nuances in these building blocks make them to experts.
As to your question: Ratcheting, rock dodge, general slow speed riding on the trails (so slowing down on sections we usually ride faster to refine our overall finesse), balance lines, vision at slow speed, etc 😊
In case you haven’t yet started it, I do recommend starting with my free Trackstand course, where you’ll find some exercises that really touch on this finesse. It’s on my coaching site (roxybike coaching). If you have trouble finding it, just get in touch.
Keep up the awesome practice mentality 💜
That's a great way to explain the need for solid foundational skills, Roxy! I wish you lived nearby so I could hire you to be my coach!
Thank you Richard. It’s so great to hear how open you are and how interested you are in all these topics. This mindset will bring you very far and help you progress much faster.
Where are you located?
Btw - I coach most of my clients online nowadays 😊😊
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Hi Roxy! Yes, all of the skills that you explain in such great detail are, for the most part, exciting because I can readily see that they are things that I can do some day with a good dose of practice. Realistically, they may not be accomplished as well as younger and stronger riders but, nonetheless, I still possess the strength and agility to do more than most others at my age. I turned 70 today but feel 45 most of the time . . the number is startling sometimes but abilities for underwater shark photography, snow skiing and, yes, mtn biking remain strong. :) I live in Jupiter, FL where we have so many wonderful parks with mtn biking trails and I'm exploring them all. Most have technical trails that are obviously more than I am presently ready to handle but, surprisingly, I can handle about 2/3 to 3/4 of them . . . not always pretty but, with your help and more time on the trails, I'm seeing improvement nearly every time out. There are clinics held in norther Florida near Ocala and nearby towns from time to time but that's about 3 to 4 hours north of me. But, who knows, maybe some day I'll find somebody to make the trip with me and make it more fun. Tell me about your "online" coaching and how it works . . . I'm interested for sure! BTW, if you're a scuba diver and ever wish to do some awesome shark diving, Jupiter is one of the best places and I'm underwater normally two or three days each week. My images are all over FB, IG and my own web site at www.ApplecorpsPhotography.com where folks buy prints of some of my images . . . especially those with them together with sharks! Cheers, Roxy, you're the best!
@@richardapple3956 Hi Richard, congratulations to your birthday!!! Wishing you health, love, radiance and joy!

Can you send me an email to roxy@roxys-coaching.com ? Then we can talk about personalized coaching options.
Cheers to you!
Buying a bike is so expensive that I now have no money left to pay someone to coach me. The only professional help I'm likely to receive now is from a medical team, who will most likely have to patch me up at some future point. so in short, Thank you for your videos. 👍
So sorry to hear, Nito. I can truly recommend spending less on bikes, because spending the money on coaching will allow you to ride SO much better than a super high-end bike will. Also, if you'd like a much more affordable and also efficient way to practice than one-day courses: roxybike.podia.com/mountain-bike-online-courses
You'll find them there!
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the link. I was mainly just teasing to be honest. I understand the benefits of coaching, having the time and finding a coach is the main issue. I'm aiming to ride with some more experienced riders. I don't actually have a high end bike, Ragley big Al for my hardtail and a giant revolt for my commutes and long distance riding. Although these are high end compared to what I rode years ago in my teens!! Anyway, again appreciate the videos, I'm learning a lot of little ways to improve.
@@nito_gocni5460 Awesome, happy to hear. In the link I shared you'll also find a free trackstand course. I can recommend getting pro coaching ASAP, as otherwise you'll automatise errors which are SUPER hard to unlearn again.
Enjoy the videos and the free course!
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire uh oh! 😬 I think I must already be fully automatised! I'm 37, and have been riding all sorts of bikes since I was 9. Recently I decided to be more serious, prioritising fitness first and now to learn some skills ( as I have none apart from I pedal good!) 😂 Anyway, thanks again. Your videos have been by far the clearest I have encountered and the MTB channel I have explored the most outside of GMBN!! Kudos for that 👍👍
Nice video 👍

Thanks! Welcome 🤗
I reckon this channel is about to take off. 17.4k subs when I posted this comment.
Thank you. I’m happy when I can help as many people as possible - to find out that building confidence on a mountain bike does NOT need to involve being scared and risking things - but instead that competence builds confidence. 😉😍
It should be emphasized that it is important to start with a hardtail rather than a fully because you will get a much better feeling then. Lately you can seen more and more people starting with an ebike fully. I can't imagine that you will then really learn how to ride a mountain bike save. And last not least: The most important 3 things are: practice, practice, practice. ;-)
Thanks for your comment :-) And why can’t you learn to ride safely with an e bike full-suspension?
Ich habe das Video übrigens auch auf Deutsch:
th-cam.com/video/qqw9OSJS8Zo/w-d-xo.html
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Great question Roxy. My REI bike instructor from yesterday would beg to differ. I'm learning on an EMTB.
Sorry, meant to say full suspension EMTB
@@rhetoricfree In my opinion we can learn to ride safely on any bike. Especially on an e mountain bike and especially on a full suspension bike. Of course full suspension bikes can also mask errors, but they can also make it easier to learn in the beginning. If you know what you’re looking for, if you’ve understood the pyramid, if you are taking it slow and allowing yourself the time to learn and practice, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t learn safely on an emtb. Which is why I asked. Every day is a school day for me and I’m always open to logical arguments :-)
Enjoy your bike, Robb!
Another great video! I think I've fallen into the trap of focusing on more advanced skills while still not secure on the basics. Would you recommend the RLC Bullet Your Basics course? Or something else if I've been riding for a while and need to "regress?" Thanks!
Yes I can truly recommend it. If you use the link
learn.ryanleech.com/roxy you can try it for free for a month. It’s so super wise and brave to realize this and to regress to progress!! Way to go, Eli!!
Thank you for these unique and great videos. I have a mtb bike (clipless pedals) and 3 months ago I decided buy a second-hand trial bike. Right now I've learned trackstand skill and I'm learning pivots. Do you think it's a good idea complement bike-trial in order to improve tech skills?
I think it’s a Great idea to complement with a bike trial 😊 Most of all, however, I think it’s ideal to practice on flats on your mtb, too, and to practice with professional coach feedback to avoid engraining bad habits 🙂 If you want to try out online coaching for one month for free, you can use this link: learn.ryanleech.com/roxy
Looking forward to your progress and thanks for your comment, Sergio!
I want to build my skills to include some trials for trail riding. Jeff lenosky's trail boss series really shows how these skills apply. If I had my druthers I would take some classes from Roxy though. :)
