  • How to use your brakes wisely on your mountain bike is a very important skill, which limits MANY riders to progress - which is why this braking tutorial teaching you specific drills on how to brake your mountain bike is relevant for almost all levels of mountain bikers. Especially, because it’s a topic many riders believe to master “anyway”. And if you think you are the best, you have stopped BECOME (better) 😌
    In this mtb-Tutorial I explain some basic braking principles and give you step-by-step exercises to really CONTROL your braking skills!
    Mountain biking demands a very fine ability to adjust and re-adjust to the demands of the trail. Therefore braking needs fine MODULATION and a very refined position, including understanding what happens when we brake and how to counteract the forces.

    I thought this was the dumbest the tutorial for me to watch. Not because of the content. I think the contest was done perfectly. You did an amazing job at describing everything. I had been Mountain Biking for 3 years now and I figured I already knew everything about braking. Geez, braking is pretty much is all I do when I go down
    Boy was I wrong!
    I did this lesson hours before one of the most intense mountain bike ride I have ever done in my life ( I had no idea it was going to be intense). As silly as the lesson seemed to me at the time, and the looks I got from people watching me pushing my bike back and forth on one wheel in the dirt, I felt that I was just looking silly.
    I was going through massive rock gardens (which I mentioned to my friend this is only for intense riders(little did I know I was going to be riding through these rock gardens)), I was hitting burms, and jumping off of small features. I've always been riding my mountain bike as if I was along for the ride and holding on to dear life. I did the hardest trail I've ever done in my life, and I crushed it! I was in control of my bike the whole way down. It was the best mountain bike experience I have ever had.
    Thank you for this lesson! Thank you for breaking everything down so easily to digest and make automatic when I go out to ride. Thank you for giving me the knowledge to have the best ride I have ever had in my life. I haven't been able to stop smiling from crushing it on the trail yesterday.

      Hello dear Hamed, thank you so much for sharing your experience. Absolutely agree - braking is one of the most underestimated skills and the one I see the biggest errors in.
      So great to hear you took the time to practice, you didn't allow your ego to stop you and that you profited to much from it.
      If you would like to have more seemingly dumb exercises, which will be life-changing, then check this course: roxybike.podia.com/mtb-fundamentals-mini-course

    "Practice these exercises on every trail that is easy for you." That is huge! It makes a lot of sense that you can only work on a new skill if you are able to just focus on that one thing at a time, which would have to be on an easy trail that doesn't take brain power to ride over. I just found your channel and am loving every video I've seen. These tutorials are going to help me be a better rider and a better coach for the junior high riders I coach through NICA (in USA). I really appreciate your explanations of why different techniques work or not.

      Thank you so so much Zai, so so happy to help. Unfortunately, YT monetarization is not personalizable on my side... So YT chooses which ads you see and to be honest, I’d prefer you to spend the most valuable thing in life you have (time) doing things you voluntarily choose to do - for example to watch my videos 😅 or ride a bike.
      But I’m very grateful for every cup of coffee I receive over buy me a coffee (link in video description) - because then I know it comes from the heart (just like my videos do).
      You know, I truly believe every person on this earth is here for a reason and each one of us gets to choose whether we want to contribute to make the world a better place. And I choose to by sharing my knowledge and by not contributing to a world filled with ads and data collection, as much as I can 💓

    Dear Roxy, first of all I want to say that you make amazing videos. They are very detailed yet short, simple and on point. I came across your channel "by accident" and it was one of the greatest accidents that ever happened to me 😅 I am myself a freediving instructor and it pleased me to see that's there are other coaches in other sports sharing same approach and are putting skills, feelings and safety before the performance because performance is an inevitable side effect of these three 😊 This video is the only one from what I've watched on this topic which really explained brake modulation in the way I understood it. I would like to share one drill which helped me a lot. I live on an elevated floor and I have to carry my bike downstairs each time when I want to go riding. • @Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire
      @Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Daniel, certainly the 2. - when we are braking, traction is reduced and the bike wants to upright itself. Therefore short accentuated braking before and as little as possible during the corner is usually better.

    @texfromro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to bother you like this but i recently discovered your channel and i listen to your videos while i'm working and of course i have tons of questions 🙂. It is ok to initiate the braking procedure with the rear brake and after a couple of milliseconds to go heavy on the front one(without locking of course)? I feel like if you are doing this the bike will become calmer and will easily accept a heavier front brake.
    Thank you for the content 😊

    • @Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire
      @Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi tex, usually, if you engage the brakes simultaneously and with finesse, like a dimmer (not a light switch), then you don't need to do that - and it's usually easier (coordination-wise) to engage both at the same time - especially when you are braking hard and to the threshold.

    Hi I am a new mountain biker and I was taught to not use my front brake but use mostly my back brake. Instinctively I would use both brakes so now I try to not use my front. Can you tell me quickly if there are scenarios where you would use only front or only back brakes or do you always modulate both brakes?

    • @Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire
      @Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Arlaine, unfortunately, if you follow that advice, you will never be able to ride steep and loose trails.
      I use both brakes on trails as a default. One example of using only front brake is when I am doing nose pivot and stoppie turns (this is a very advanced skill where the rear wheel is in the air and you are turning around the front wheel) or when I am practicing to modulate the front better - then I sometimes actually ride an entire tour only using the front brake.
      Only back brake: almost never. One scenario would be if I am deliberately trying to skid my rear or if my front wheel is on wet wood (because you have no traction here).
      But other than that and especially if I am using the brakes to slow down: BOTH brakes it is.
