How does adding weight actually affect performance?
Well today we’re going to find out using Mat’s daily, the Porsche 911 Turbo S. We’ve lined up a number of tests to find out what effect adding weight has on the car.
We’re going to launch the car from 0-60mph and over the 1 /4 mile, do a brake test, a slalom and measure the car's economy. We’ll be testing with just a driver, with a single passenger, with three passengers and with three passengers with 150kg of weight in the boot!
How do you think the added load will impact the Porsche? Stick with us to find out for yourself!

One interesting test would have been to have just the two people adding 158 kg in the back seats on one run and another run with no one in the back seats but 150 kgs of ballast in the front trunk to see how the position of the extra weight affects the car

I think the conclusion would be what you think it would be. adding weight to rear will improve 0-60 slightly and adding 150kg to the front only will hurt 0-60 slighlty. but adding weight anywhere will hurt the quarter mile time either way

I'm more shocked that adding passengers makes the 0-60 quicker even though the car is AWD...the only explanation I can see is the AWD system is not properly tuned and doesn't know how to take advantage of the front grip as well as the rear grip. more weight cant improve acceleration unless it's more weight on driven wheels. let's say on a RWD , you add 10% of the total weight, but in the back m, resulting in 15% more weight on the rear wheels m, 15% more grip/wheel torque actually transfered to the road. but if AWD is properly implemented, AWD should always be quicker with less weight. I don't know how the torque is actually split, I've read that the torque split is continuously adjusted but even weirder, I'd expect the launch control to be more optimized for 2 people than 4. how often are you likely to drive your turbo S with 4 adults inside, and use launch control?? good thing is that it means there are still small improvements/performance gains to be made on the next gen. otherwise it's getting so close to perfect supercar+daily driver. it feels like hybridization/electrification will come at a good time when they have almost exhausted what they can do with the traditional design gas 911. pdk is already close to as good as it gets. straight line performance is insane. how far can you go with wheel size before it stops looking like a 911 or even a sports car
I would have loved to see a lightweight non hybrid 911 with a boxer free valve engine. of you put 2 Koenigsegg TFG 2l inline 3 together, you have a stock 4l flat 6 1200hp engine, up to 1200Nm from 2000rpm or a even 600hp NA GT3 RS with turbos they could still donwsize to 3.0l ...and also WAY better mileage/emissions

At the age of 15, i started to race cars at slalom races with a Opel Corsa. The Car was built up and weight was around 1000KG + driver and it had 100hp. You might think now: Well it doesn't make a difference. Let me tell you something: When we were in training for races on the slalom courses and we had a beginner girl (~ 50KG) as a passenger to show her how to drive fast, the times dropped consistantly around !!!!!HALF A SECOND!!!!! (times were always around 50 seconds on those 1km slalom tracks).
So even there it was quiet hard to keep up, if you are really tall or really fat.

Do a video showing the effect of heavier or lighter ROTATING MASS. Meaning the effect of heavier or lighter road wheels. Also bigger or smaller brake discs.
The 0-60 times would be interesting.
Rotating mass makes a bigger difference than people realise/expect.

Very interesting. 911 HUL (factory supplied vehicle/press car) was a consistent 10.1 second car. Suddenly we are seeing times consistently north of 10.4 on Matt's personal car. What happened to the 2.1 second 0-60 thats repeatable over and over again. The surface seemed pretty dry to me so no excuse there.

BTW, it had never done 2.1,the fastest time it did to 100 was 2.5
And the reason for the decrease is probably the fact that it's a press car and it has undergone some tough use before it was handed to Matt and also the tires are probably used a lot. So you can understand why it is slower.

Very informative test. I would like to see this test done with an Electric car like a Tesla Model 3. However, you should change the weight of the wheels 🛞 too. Since the EV doesn’t have a flywheel changing the rotational inertia affects it considerably. Also at higher speeds the single speed transmission limits the power of the motors. Adding or removing weight would affect high speed performance greatly.

    • @Havanu81
      @Havanu81 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's the handling that's affected most when engines are this powerful, not the acceleration. These cars are mostly limited by traction/tires and gears more than power output. And all the extra weight is centered in the middle of the car, so even the balance stays pretty much the same.

    _However..._
When there was *me and 5 other people in the car,* it wasn't so nippy due to being _"over crowded"..._ As the nice policeman who stopped me very late one night pointed out.
But as I had been nice and pleasant to the same police who'd stopped me the night before, they let me off saying _"Don't do it again."_
