I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I appreciate you sharing this song with us. Listening to it is helping me through some difficult times of my own. Sending love and good thoughts from me and my banjo here in NY.
This might seem weird, but as an english speaker, it’s kinda fun listening to scots-the language is so similar to english to where you kinda understand the meaning, but the words remain obscured by the veil of the language barrier. it allows for a delightfully active listening experience while also sounding mysterious and captivating. bravo!
I might be an America, but Scottish blood runs in my veins. Because music like this has always spoken to me more than anything else. After years of searching, I finally found out that my family came to America on a boat from Scotland a LONG time ago and I've traced my family back to the Scottish Clan Maclaren. Most of us have since then stayed on the east coast. And Like most Irish and Scottish immigrants back then, they dropped the "Mac" from their names. So Maclaren became Laren. And because many couldn't read or write, and because of the accent, over time it was changed, misunderstood and misspelled and became Laurence, then Lawson and then Laws as well as other variations. So if anyone has any of those last name or something close, then you MIGHT be related to them as well.

I keep coming back to your version of this song; it's just so good. It feels like you recorded a travelling bard performing this song back in the day, and that just makes it magical for me
Love your music! First discovered you on TikTok with this video the other day and I listened over and over. It’s been a hard year for me as well and your rendition of this is really comforting, like you described. The voice and something about the tempo really gets right to the heart. Glad you uploaded it here, and I hope it gets added on Spotify. The deepest of condolences about your father.
Hey Sam, big love from Nova Scotia! I started listening to you after your GemsOnVHS House Carpenter vid came out and got hooked on your Causeway Recordings album right after. I've been trying to learn clawhammer banjo over the last year and you're always the person I come back to for inspiration. Keep doing your thing man!

I liked this clip but it was a reluctant like. Only negative being the word 'Freedom' on his guitar. I'd rather not have that shower of charlatans in the Scottish parliaments version of 'freedom' thank you very much.

Its from Dundee. It should be "doon" the Overgate not "in" the overgate , its a street not an actual gate.
