    When a Scot who supported the Jacobite cause was asked to toast the king in a public place, he would make sure that he had a glass of water on the table over which he would raise his real drink. By doing this he was in effect toasting the king "o'er the water" (the one in exile) instead of the one actually on the throne. That way, he could not be charged with making a treasonous statement. For you Scottish rebels, I also recommend Connie Dover's version of Lady Keith's Lament, which contains a lot of history and social implications. (The Whigs detested the Jacobites). "Jacobite" originally meant supporter of James ("Jacobite" comes from "Iacobus" which is Latin for both James and Jacob). Bonnie Prince Charlie's grandfather was King James II of England who was overthrown in 1688 and was finally defeated by his own son-in-law, the Dutchman William of Orange in Ireland in 1690 (Battle of the Boyne). Interestingly, before James II became King, he was the Duke of Albany and York, in whose honor New York is named (as well as New York's capital, Albany). The colony's name was renamed from New Amsterdam, after the British defeated the Dutch during the reign of his brother, King Chales II.

      +Luke Koziol Tory politicians and lords who believed in the concepts of divine right and absolute monarchy refused to accept the situation. William III was James's son-in-law. He was married to his daughter. Primogeniture dictated that this was unacceptable, as the daughter (Mary II) should be sole ruler, having inherited the crown from her father. The presence of the foreign William on the throne, at a time when Dutchmen were viewed with general dislike in Britain, led to Tory lords supporting James's claim.On the other hand, Whigs hated James for his Catholicism and supported William's claim. Later, they would support the occupation of the throne by the Hanoverians.

      It wasn't at the Boyne that James was defeated. The Boyne could have been won by James if he hadn't pulled out, it is believed. The Irish Jacobite's were finally crushed in their homeland following the Battle of Aughrim in 1691, where they lost 7000 men, compared to the Williamite casualties of 500, as the commander didn't share his battle plans with anyone else, and then had his head blown off by a cannonball. This was followed by the treaty of Limerick and the departure of the Irish Jacobite army, following James into exile, where they served in France, wearing long skirted red coats, as they saw themselves as the rightful British army. They joined every Jacobite rising, including the famous '45, where, on Drummossie moor, they held the sunken road and enabled the MacDonald's to escape by holding off the enemy cavalry. They were disbanded following the French Revolution.
      Would be interesting to see what the world would be like if the Jacobite's held onto the throne...

      a scot here i have had amazing dreams of india and hindu deitys?, no idea why they pop in my sleep time to time. hope i can see india awake one day, i hope you make it to scotland one day. the outlander song you love, the words have been changed for the tv show . the original words are a scottish rebel lullaby song. the skye boat song. the skye boat song is still sang in original words to this day as a way to sing our children to sleep. but the history behind it is hidden. the song speaks of the man who was born to be king of scotland ( lost the battle} but dressed as a woman to retreat to the isle of skye in scotland in a little boat, to escape the enemy to try think of how to win again. the battle of culloden happened after , it was a complicated battle ,between many nations and their politacal and religeous beliefs, not scotland against england. the last battle fought on uk soil. and the jacobites lost. empire of the world was not far behind that loss

      @@ronnicholson153 Cause there's still loads of people who will happily fight some ancient dumb mad fight about who is the rightful king. That's what this song is about in a time when there were several uprisings which all got crushed and killed and maimed loads of people achieving nothing. And still prince Charlie went and still some Scots followed and died hopelessly and painfully. Most of which were forced to follow due to serfdom clan system.

      As for the song: I'm not taking any sides and I didn't even listen to the lyrics (I did read them afterwards of course), but the song itself sounds nice. Maybe a lil' bit too modern rendition for my liking but good nontheless.

      Charles Stuart lived abroad because he would have been kill if he returned to England or Scotland. The Stuart family, originally Stewart from The High Stewart of Scotland, were of Scottish heritage and later English heritage when they intermarried. They were ousted under the guise of tyranny when in reality it was due to being Catholic and they had a perfectly good claim to the English throne.

    To the tune of "She'll be Coming Around The Mountain"
    You Jacobites by Name, now give Ear, now give Ear,
    You Jacobites by Name, now give Ear;

    Some says you are to blame for this Wear.

    With the Pope you covenant, as they say, as they say,
    With the Pope you covenant, as they say,
    With the Pope you covenant, and Letters there you sent,
    Which made your Prince present to array.

    Your Prince and Duke o'Perth, where they go,
    Your Prince and Duke o'Perth, they're Cumb'rers o' the Earth,
    Causing great Hunger and Dearth where they go.
    He is the King of Reef, I'll declare, I'll declare,
    He is the King of Reef, I'll declare,
    He is the King of Reef, of a Robber and o' Thief,
    To rest void of Relief when he's near.
    They marched thro' our Land cruelly, cruelly,
    They marched thro' our Land cruelly,
    They marched thro' our Land with a bloody thievish Band
    To Edinburgh then they wan Treachery.
    To Preston then they came, in a Rout, in a Rout,
    To Preston then they came, in a Rout;
    To Preston then they came, brave Gard'ner murd'red then.
    A Traitor did command, as we doubt.
    To England then they went, as bold, as bold,
    To England then they went, as bold;
    To England then they went, and Carlisle they ta'en't,
    The Crown they fain would ha'en't, but behold.
    To London as they went, on the Way, on the Way,
    To London as they went, on the way,
    To London as they went, in a Trap did there present,
    No battle they will stent, for to die.
    They turned from that Place, and they ran, and they ran,
    They turned from that Place, and they ran;
    They turned from that Place as the Fox, when Hounds do chace.
    They tremble at the Name, CUMBERLAN'.
    To Scotland then they came, when they fly, when they fly,
    To Scotland then they came, when they fly,
    To Scotland then they came, and they robb'd on every Hand,
    By Jacobites Command, where they ly.
    When Duke William does command, you must go, you must go;
    When Duke William does command, you must go;
    When Duke William does command, then you must leave the Land,
    Your Conscience in your Hand like a Crow.
    Tho' Carlisle ye took by the Way, by the Way;
    Tho' Carlisle ye took by the Way;
    Tho' Carlisle ye took, short Space ye did it Brook,
    These Rebels got a Rope on a Day.
    The Pope and Prelacy, where they came, where they came,

    What is right and what is wrong, a short sword and a long
    A weak arm and a strong for to draw.
    What makes heroic strife famed afar, famed afar?

    What makes heroic strife, to whet the assassin's knife
    Or hunt a parent's life with bloody war.
    Then leave your schemes alone in the state, in the state

    Then leave your schemes alone, adore the rising sun

    @Injektilo7 I think the other thing to remember about Burns is that he wrote in character. So he wrote this song from basically an anti-Jacobite view but equally he wrote more from a pro-Jacobite view. Sometimes a song is just a song and needn't be taken as someone's actual strong views. Likewise you are right in that many of the Jacobite songs were written from a later romanticised viewpoint by people who were staunchly loyal to the Hanovarian monarchs. A big part of being a 'Jacobite' was wanting to anull the 1707 'Act of Union'. Charles Edward Stewart did this in November 1745 in Holyrood Edinburgh as part of the process of reversing what the Hanovarians had done to Great Britain and Ireland.

      In 1707 when the Scottish Parliament passed their Act of Union (after the English Act in 1706) Queen Anne was monarch. She was a Stuart.
      The First Hanoverian monarch in Britain was George I whose reign started in 1714. He was brought in as a constitutional monarch, more figurehead than ruler and certainly not ruler by divine right as James the pretender wished.
      So, no, the Hanoverians did not enact the Act of Union, and the fact of the Union was not within their power anyway since Parliament had reasserted itself and they were constitutional monarchs.

      ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!!!
      Just before the final decision, David Cameron went on a tour of Scotland and miraculously, the No voters got the upper hand!
      There was definitely cloak and dagger shit going on.

    It's not ...its man who regrets..being caught up in the power struggle for the throne...as a Scotsman we all sing this as a PRO jacobite song...but with regrets that we lost....do NOT let any Unionist tell you otherwise..they have been trying to dilute this powerful song for ages...sod them.

      Exactly! Why would they? Scotland had just spent the last 200 years forcing Scot’s and Presbyterianism upon the Highlanders just as the English were doing with Ireland.

      @@Somerandomdrummer8 I don't disagree with you but 9 in 10 of people in Scotland have always lived in the lowlands. It's ashame more people don't understand the difference between Scots and Highlander. The Highlanders, let's be honest lived a brutal existence, where the clan leader was in effect a warlord dictator. The Highlanders way of life was always going to come crashing down during the age of enlightment(which the Scots helped to create), the Highlanders were incredibly loyal to the House of Stuart, a lowland Scots Royal Family. Your English part in Ireland makes less sense, as most of the British in NI are from Scottish Presbyterian background. In the 17th/18th century the biggest supporters of Irish Independence were Anglo Protestants like Wolfetone :)

      One cannot look at Scottish Nationalism without the twin feelings of pride and sadness.
      I am a Scottish Nationalist and I want to see Scotland finally free of English tyranny.
      I am proud of the sacrifices made by the brave heroes that gave up their lives.
      But I lament with a heart that is utterly broken by the inability of our people to stand TOGETHER as an ENTIRE NATION against the common enemy.
      Our forefathers fought for more than just independence. They gave their lives for a country that we could claim as our natural birthright.
      "As England used once to be large enough for seven kings or more"
      "And we being but poor Scots who covet nothing but our own".
