Hertfordshire based organisations, Tribemix and Quantum Care, have developed a series of virtual reality experiences that take people living with dementia in care out of the residential homes and away to a range of relaxing places. The immersive 3D scenes include the beach, a forest or even to watch dolphins playing around a coral reef.
The project has already gained industry recognition as Tribemix and Quantum Care have been nominated for an Outstanding Innovation Award in Dementia Care at the National Dementia Care Awards.
The project began when Alex Smale, wanted to help his elderly neighbours to get outside after becoming isolated due to disability, “Our nearby residents, Stan and Dulcie, are 99 and 94 years old respectively. Over the past two years, we watched them go from active people walking into town to do their shopping, to losing their confidence and never leaving the house. When we began developing in VR for our commercial clients early this year, I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could take Stan and Dulcie to the beach?’. So I created a virtual reality experience to do just that. This led to a conversation with a friend at Quantum Care. They were fortunately very forward thinking, and understood what we were trying to do. The results have been amazing and it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever been fortunate enough to do.”.
Tribemix is now working with Quantum Care to roll the project out across their care home group. They are also working on developing the technology into training to allow carers and relatives to understand what it feels like to live with dementia.
I work with people suffering from dementia. Some of them are happy, still. Both most of them are quite miserable.. To see them be happy like this would would make me cry.. It would be so awesome if this became a new standard!!

I shared my Vive with our 80+ neighbor across the street, just two weeks before she died. I showed her 'The Blu', an 'under the sea' simulator, and she was enraptured. She told me about her son, long gone, who had loved to dive, and that now she understood why he loved scuba so much. She'd never been to the sea in her life. She was crying with joy, after the experience was over. She was so grateful to get to see what being underwater looked like, to feel like she was there.
If you know someone old, or trapped with disability, and you have a VR unit - share it. Go over, introduce yourself, and offer the experience. It matters. It helps. And you will make a friend... even if... not for all that long. It still is worth it.

I am a dementia friends champion and this type of thing is an essential aid. Dementia awareness is a vital project, but gets very little publicity, so well done.
My Grandma has Dementia and she always talks about how she's lonely and wishes she could go back home. This is truly amazing!

I am with you mrcyfift. My mom passed away last year due to a stroke, but she had dementia as well. I wish she could have experienced this too. Sorry to hear about your mom passing away.
A very noble pursuit and empathic use of the technology; that was quite emotional to watch, bless you all.
It was wonderful to see their spirits lifted and the joy in their faces: it gave this technology a powerfully therapeutic calling.

by the time most of us are 90 they'd have cured certain types of dementia.

Im gonna visit my 94 year old grandparents tomorrow with my brand new Oculus quest 2 and show them some of this, best idea ive ever seen i love it! My grandfather has severe dementia and abit of alzheimers along with beeing in a wheelchair 24/7 im hoping hell love it

Regarding the elderly/disabled: With the complexity of video games & technology nowadays patients could visit museums, national parks, zoos, castles; tour a city or historical landmarks, see the world wonders - or even partake in activities they used to enjoy like mountain climbing, parachuting, skiing, fishing, hiking, deep sea diving, hunting, hang gliding, flying a plane; or just relax on a beach or explore a rainforest - I mean the possibilities truly are endless! The *therapeutic potential* of VR for the elderly/disabled is absolutely something that should be invested in. To experience things inaccessible to you due to your mental or physical limitations is something that *needs* government funding & should be looked at as a *legitimate* form of healing & wellness. The boundless potential! It's a no-brainer, wouldn't you agree?

Invest in a 360 camera and get footage of a day in the life right now, perhaps just of your living room with your spouse and kids just watching TV. Perhaps take it outside and film a location where you frequently sat as a child, or as a young adult. Although you may not remember doing it, you might be thankful you did it in the future.
What an inspiring video, further research and investigation to look at what benefits VR can bring is a must.

I have an Oculus that I let my patient with dementia use sometimes & he enjoys going to places he used to visit before his condition became worst. He doesn’t have much time left so I’m hoping it helps.
God, I hope someday we get to provide our elders something close to "San Junipero" kinda of thing, you know? Because you can see they just have so, so much life left in them still, despite their situation. Like, can you imagine how fucking cool that would be? Say what you wanna say, but technology is our greatest good and, hopefully, mankind will learn how to make good use of it someday.

I just realized that my late grandmother had dementia 2-3 years before her death, poor her, it deteriorates her.
I should've put this VR unit, or even other kinds of joy, she should've learn TH-cam I bet that could help to, should've bought her iPad

Wish the graphics were a lot better.
Maybe that's just a prototype. I guess they might be able to make very realistic graphics when they can sell it on a wider market.

Ah. Just wondered, since she seemed so paranoid at first, and then was enjoying it so much, but you didn't show her coming out of it like the others.
