Superman needs some humor because people gotta realize that behind the suit he’s just a chill, mellow, upstanding guy. He knows when to get serious when the situation calls for it. Does this mean he should be a comedic character? No! But Gunn has proven that he knows how to balance out humor and seriousness from scene to scene, even with goofy characters such as Vigilante and Peacemaker

I think Gunn is sincere and I wish him well but I have little optimism he will be able to create what he is talking about. That could take many years and people are jaded at this point. It's much more satisfying to watch the Justice League cartoons then hope a new film series will really be excellent.
I agree but I think even if people dont catch on right away, as long as the films are good opinions will change. Its really just about quality over quantity and if every film is good on its own merit, people wont have much issue with going back and watching them all which is easier than ever nowadays with streaming services.

The best creative endeavors often have a crwative guy and a financial guy. Walt Disney was a horrible money guy, great creative, his brother was the books guy and iften had to pull back on the spending meaning getting creative with what you had. So this gives me confidence that these 2 will do great things.
As a creative I always feel for this kind of job. It just doesn't seem conducive to creativity. You make one mistake and the public just eviscerates you.

I think Gunn will take over great, he will have some smaller budgets, more serious movies, ones that really connect, stories that gel, universal DC world that gels, Budgets are used wisely, characters will be done right, and fresh slate to slingshot DC.
I truly believe that Gunn is going to deliver a Superman that will meet and possibly.. possibly exceed Richard Donners original.. that is not to take away from Donner or Reeve in any way... its a good thing. Snyders vision was overly dark and it wasted a great Superman in Cavill IMO. All that being said I expect big things for this new DCU.
He has a huge hole that WB dug to climb out of and theres a chance that even if his superman movie is great people won't see it because of the reputation DC movies have and then WB being WB will probably panic again and scrap everything and start over yet again. Also i hope i'm wrong because i love dc characters and hate seeing dc fail over and over again.
I'm interested to see what Gunn's reaction will be the The Flash's flop. I mean (and I know not everyone agrees) The Flash is a bona fide _great_ f***ing movie, the character is well known, almost nobody outside of geeks knows or cares about Ezra Miller's crazy shit, Miller is an amazing actor, Sasha Calle is an excellent Supergirl, Michael Keaton is there, and on and on. There's no reason this movie should have failed. So I'll be watching and listening to see what Gunn thinks about the situation and whether he thinks this bodes ill for the DC reboot.
Nah my top 5 is flash and aint no way im giving money ezra cringe .hack snyder made this abomination flash who has goofy ahh run .my barry runs like season 1 tv show
There are quite a few reasons and they all played part: 1. Despite you admit it or not DCEU had only one dedicated fanbase and that was the Snyderfans. No matter how the movies were as long as it was part of Snyder's continued storyline, they would show up to see those movies and that's the only reason all Snyder associated DC movies are box office hit. Every other DCEU movies flopped at box office 2. The behind the camera drama about going behind Snyder and almost remaking Justice League, Wheadon treating the JL cast horribly and 2 of the WB executives being fired over them, really made general audience see DC movies negatively. 3. The Flash's initial test screening were amazing that's the only reason WB put so much faith into this and promoted the hell out of it. But there's big catch ( the movie was quite different during test screening). In fact by the time the Flash ended in test screening, every moviegoer at the theater felt super optimistic cause it hinted at an united rebooted universe where Cavil stays, Affleck stays and lots of new opportunities for future movies are set in place. But the actual Flash movie removed all of those and ended the movie on basically by a George Clooney came just for a single joke punchline. I was one of the people who saw the early screening of Flash and I loved it then and when I saw the actual movie in theater after it came out, I was furious. The movie was so so much better initially. Few people might have liked the final cut of that movie but it would have been universally loved by everyone if they released the test screening cut without editing. 4. Ezra Miller, who is being accused of quite a few nasty charges and him leading the movie is what made many fans don't wanna see it. Despite the fact most of the crimes he was accused of has been proven false at court but he's still not likeable among most of the fans. James gunn is a great filmmaker and I myself am a big fan of his Guardian movies and his Peacemaker series. But being a director and being the head of a studio are quite different roles. So far as the DC head, his decision making has only resulted into loss for DC. I hope he starts improving on that for the sake of every DC fan out there
I've had this question, what if James Gunn and Richard Donner directed Superman the movie, then he solely directed Superman 2, what would have DC movie studio been if he had done that?
James Gunn is the prefect filmmaker to take over for DC and to finally get the DC Universe right on film. As he said everyone has an idea of what the DC Universe should be and fans love different eras and takes on the DC characters like The Arrowverse , Smallville , The DCEU , Classic DC Films and TV Shows and the animated world like The DCAU. So I do trust James to get it right with the DCU and get these character right. Can't wait for what he has to offer !!!
The DC animated universe is really good but they for sure should focus on one thing marvel doesn't have which is the sidekicks and sidekick teams. It's only been really well done in animation
I trust James Gunn to handle things at DC. I'm not worried, but more so, thinking about how the normies will respond to everything, because they make up the majority of audience. I'll be there either way, when DC projects come out. TERRANCE OUT
A lot of ppl these days don't consider "a buttload of cash" as the first or best incentive when making major life decisions. Some of us value integrity and career fulfillment too.
@@Churro_Flaminguez especially someone who has already made as much money as he has. At a certain point, creative people really are just thinking about what they can spend their time on that feels meaningful.
I trust this man will do well with DC. I just hope fans give him a chance. People are so quick these days to tear into people without seeing the bigger picture of what they are trying to do and that's why we end up with predictable and boring stories.
DC Fans will definitely give him a chance but he needs to win the general audience, the ones that are have grown to love the MCU for years so he and WB needs to make sure that these films are focused on quality first over building up. The other factor to also worry about are the Snyder stans all over Twitter and certain DC Subreddits that rather have Gunn fail his universe just because of Zack Snyder's departure of the franchise. They rather burn WB and DC to the ground because of three failed attempts. All those guys want are their JL sequels that were inspired by Injustice video games and Final Crisis which ends in a fifth movie divisively
He needs to win back the dedicated DC movie fans. There currently isn't one right now. Despite what normies and media says DCEU had a dedicated fanbase who no matter how the movie was, would show up in theater and was genuinely interested to see how the connected universe story would progress. That's exactly why the phase 1 of DC movies till Aquaman all were a box office movie success. Even Suicide Squad despite how bad it was, made profit at box office. Media critics review don't matter for shit cause, literally every single DCEU movie that wasn't directly associated by Snyder somehow flopped at box office and costed WB money. Shazam 1,2 , The Suicide Squad, Wheadon's Justice League, Black Adam, Birds of Prey, the Flash and Blue Beetle is on their way now. It's an extremely bold assumption to think that you're gonna ignore the wishe's of the only dedicated fanbase of your to appease MCU fans and general audience and your movies would still be a success. MCU movies have a dedicated fanbase, no matter how bad or terrible some of their movies may be, those dedicated fanbase would still make those movies successful. DCEU had one and WB with their dumb decisions have managed to make them all lose interest in their DC movies. Gunn really needs to step up if he wants his DC movies to be successful in future. Firing Henry Cavil, who was universally loved by most DC fans while keeping his own The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker cast wasn't something that would make him likeable to most DC fans. I am not a Snyder fanboy and I love Gunn's work in GOTG movies but as a head of a movie studio, you gotta think about movie's financial success before anything else. I hope he starts delivering.
The challenge is that DC characters are very overpowered, it's a lot harder to capture people's immersion than with marvel movies. It's only ever really worked as animation where it blurs the lines, or embracing the camp. The animated universe worked and the arrowverse worked because people accepted its a campy tv show. It's not going to be an easy task to make this work. There's so much competition. It's going to be a challenge.

Just having someone who "knows the comics" isn't a surefire thing either as the marvel "creative committee" put out crap like iron man 2 and the first two Thor movies.

I really hope the GOTG vol 1 phenomenon repeats again with this cast..Well its good for us right if he can repeat that. And one more thing.. Gunn didnt screw Henry Cavill.. that mfkg Walter Hamada did.. wasted him for a decade.
My fear is the new dc is that. What he mentioned. Ppl loving the animated stuff. And that ppl have an idea of what it should be…. The animated stuff is exactly what dc fans want and these movies need. Heart fun action just update some things a lil. Im open to anything they try tho. My other fear is the hordes of snyderverse blow hards. They’ll never give the movie or new “universe” a proper shake.
how was he okay with The Flash movie and not showing Grant and John but instead shows Nick Cage for something that was basically close to a meme. Like he knows of the Arrowverse and just completely shit on that. I can understand getting rid of Cavill to a degree but like come on
Arrowverse was a shitty universe, everyone show was good until the 2nd season, it deserves to die and be forgotten from history due to how shitty it was
I was extremely optimistic and thrilled post Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and GoG3 that this was the creative to steer the ship! ...Then he goes on record saying The Flash was fantastic and all that good will went into the negatives.
Hope superman isn’t cancelled by WB nothing is safe at this point and DC studios better move more into its own thing and move away from the control of WB
Unfortunately, Gunn is fighting an uphill battle. Superhero fatigue is setting in. Covid made people realize movie theaters suck. Unless he pulls something really awesome out, he might as well be directing spaghetti western.
Well you never know maybe he comes back one day. Reason I say that is because think about some of the big event stories they’ll be building towards with this new dc universe. At some point they’ll wanna do things like crisis and maybe he comes back and plays a Superman variant from another world in a movie. I think it’s possible that could happen
I generally find strong expectayions to be a negative thing. I'm actively trying to not jump on the hype train nowadays. And I also try to stay away from negativity. I find the best mindset to have if the goal is to enjoy the movie I'm going to watch is to have *reasonable* expectations. Realistic ones. And, preferrably, vaguely positive and curious. This allows me to enjoy the maximum amount of movies that I watch. Because… Let's be real. Life is finite. You are only going to watch so many movies in your lifetime. And your being angry on the internet is not going to change the studio system to any measurable degree; it's going to continue to exist under capitalism and that means certain pressures et cetera. So either you can get angry and go on some quixotic quest to "make movies better", or you can focus on bringing more positivity into your life and into the world. Which will have the best impact on the world? All of this to say: I'm very curious to see what Gunn's version of the DC cinematic universe will be like. His is not the first take, it won't be the last, noone's coming to take your personal copy of the Snyder Cut. If the Gunnverse isn't to your liking, it's going to be temporary either way. Just wait for the next iteration. I think I'll enjoy his vision - He's proven to make interesting stuff before, and I'm not stuck in some idea of what the DC universe "should" be, or what certain characters "should" be.
Superman: Legacy will be the first true DCU film, planned and to be produced under DC studios. Every film coming out this year, even Blue Beetle, was written and produced before or during the planning of the DCU. BB just happens to be the one they’ll likely integrate/carry over.
As long as James Gunn knows how to tell wb executives to fuck off, we’ll be fine. He’s an incredible creative, but we’ve seen how dangerous studio edits of these films can be.. BvS, Justice League, and Suicide Squad 1 all being good examples.
Yes, but he still wouldn’t accept it because he would rather do creative plans over financial plans. Right now James Gunn can do what he wants for the movie, while Peter do financial planning of the movie.
At this point I think James has to announce the rest of chapter 1 because the strike if I had to job with the disabilities I have I’d probably wanna work for him at dc studios that’s how much trust I have in him right now animation and old tv shows not the comics is what interested me in the characters but that was before the dcau which Bruce timm and Paul dini made which showed me more of how big the world of dc is with multiple earths different layers of characters all across those earths in multiverse and the casuals do not know that they think dc they think super friends,Adam west,Lynda carter and Micheal Keaton what Batman is they have no idea how to feel for those characters besides the hero part which brings us back to the fantasy element of what James said about secret identity it’s more playful In Storytelling then what they did in the mcu but overall in the mean time I think with the strike going on I think he should the rest of the slate and what this builds up to for confused fans
I hope Gunn makes the DCU into something awesome. But I’m going to set my expectations to non-existent so I’ve got no room to be disappointed if nothing good materializes.

Marvel/Disney did this guy dirty but great to see he is still positive and loving his work.
What are you talking about? No, they didn't. Yes, they did fire him over resurfaced tweets but that got resolved. They rehired him and allowed Gunn to complete his Guardians trilogy and do it the way he wanted.
I hope we stick to the classic feel. Also start with the premise that the golden age heroes already exists. I remember in Batman Hush where Bruce witnesses the original Green Lantern fighting afar.
He's 💯 percent right in that above all else, he is an amazing storyteller . How he crafted so much emotion from a raccoon, tree, and a superhero wearing a toilet bowl on his head. 😢😢😢 Can't wait to see what is going on next
Since The Rock’s attempted power play, DC movies have been in free-fall at the box office. At this rate, I’ll be surprised if we even get half the movies Gunn has planned

I think Gunn will take over great, he will have some smaller budgets, more serious movies, ones that really connect, stories that gel, universal DC world that gels, Budgets are used wisely, characters will be done right, and fresh slate to slingshot DC.
there is no guarantee. don't live in a bubble. The flash was great and it still failed at the box office.

I'm honestly excited and hopeful for the new DCU. I can't wait for Superman.
Why does it say working with Peter Dinklage @ 1:24?

Good spot 😂😂
The more known Peter so let's use that
He has a huge hole that WB dug to climb out of and theres a chance that even if his superman movie is great people won't see it because of the reputation DC movies have and then WB being WB will probably panic again and scrap everything and start over yet again. Also i hope i'm wrong because i love dc characters and hate seeing dc fail over and over again.
Good Luck James! I'm excited to see what's to come with the new DCU!
Nabbed yourself a new subscriber, your a great actor Michael. Your Lex is and was the greatest. Great interviewer.
My only problem is him making announcements. When the DCEU was in the middle of a movie slate. That was a bad business decision.

So I'll be watching and listening to see what Gunn thinks about the situation and whether he thinks this bodes ill for the DC reboot.
i'm interested to see that as well
Nah my top 5 is flash and aint no way im giving money ezra cringe .hack snyder made this abomination flash who has goofy ahh run .my barry runs like season 1 tv show
There are quite a few reasons and they all played part:
1. Despite you admit it or not DCEU had only one dedicated fanbase and that was the Snyderfans. No matter how the movies were as long as it was part of Snyder's continued storyline, they would show up to see those movies and that's the only reason all Snyder associated DC movies are box office hit. Every other DCEU movies flopped at box office
I hope he starts improving on that for the sake of every DC fan out there
Im so glad mr Gunn wasnt canceled, love exploring the world through his lenses
Someone please tell Gunn that hair style is just for celebrity chefs.
why do you care about someones hair style? weirdo
your best episode ! hands down.
I worked with James on his first film, he was a good dude then.
He's still a good dude now?
Money and creative freedom. In that order.

Hearing Gunn's thought process is priceless.
I think Gunn put his chips down far too late. People are starting to get tired of superhero movies. This is going to be a disaster.
Not true, look at Deadpool and Wolverine. Over a billion dollars, people are just tired of bad or mediocre movies.
@Jay20Sanchez That's pretty tame for a comic book movie. They're losing their steam.

A buttload of cash?
A lot of ppl these days don't consider "a buttload of cash" as the first or best incentive when making major life decisions. Some of us value integrity and career fulfillment too.
@@Churro_FlaminguezBut a ton of money dangled in your face doesn’t hurt.
Hey Lex, I just subscribed to your channel.

WBD wanted Peter Safran to head DC. Safran wouldn't take the job unless he could bring James Gunn with him. WBD didn't go looking for James Gunn. They got stuck with him. They couldn't find anyone to take the job. The old WB damaged the DC brand so badly.

I’m sure the boatload of money they dropped on his doorstep helped.
