James Gunn (Co-CEO of DC Studios) returns to the pod this week to talk about his takeover of the new DC content slate, the differences between DC and Marvel, and all the pressure that comes with creating a new Superman film. James goes back and discusses the impact that creating Guardians of the Galaxy had on his career and how ‘allowing himself to give a s***’ was a large catalyst to its success. @@WhatsBigginThe Post-Crisis version of Lex, Pre-Crisis Lex, New 52 Lex, which version of Lex from the comics? He’s been around and reinterpreted for nearly 100 years. Frankly I’ve never seen the type of Lex that Eisenberg played in the pages of All-Star Superman, Public Enemies, Kingdom Come, or Infinite Crisis to name a few. With a vague answer like yours I can’t help but wonder if you know what you’re talking about. Basically, name the comic where Lex Luthor behaves the way Eisenberg did.
Superman is not burdened with a grim responsibility to help another species. He's is just a man from Kansas who loves helping people (and has the ability to).

I love that Michael fights for a solid Lex in the movie even when he won’t be that Lex because he’s Smallville’s Lex from a different place and time. I love that he respects his character and wants to protect him. It showed in your work, Michael. We felt it.

I didn't even see much Smallville, but in the few episodes I did see I genuinely loved Michael's Lex. Super cool and charismatic, as Lex should be. He probably *is* the best live-action Lex Luthor there's been.

Michael and Gene Hackman were the best. And Michael was clearly talking about Jesse Eisenberg.
Even if Rosenbaum wont be cast as Lex for Gunns DC verse, I can guarantee that his Lex will be the blueprint for which Gunn bases his Lex off of.
James seemed pretty legit in calling Rosenbaum's Lex the best, which gives me confidence he understands the character and if he has a Lex, his Lex will be right.
Or, you know, a decent version of the character.
Nicholas Hoult is pretty perfect.

MIchael is 100% the best Lex. by season 10 you can't help but grieve for these two friends who are standing on different sides of the same war. Michael played Lex with vulnerability and conviction. You watch Lex and clark grow up and it's absolutely heartbreaking when the line gets drawn in the sand.

The biggest problem with the casting of Superman for his project is he'll have a target on his back the moment he signs on. Henry Cavill was genuinely an amazing Superman and fans loved him and then he got screwed over by the WB studio. The next guy is going to have to follow THAT and will come with baggage that's not his fault the moment he signs on.
People will still be bitter over how a truly amazing Superman was dumped by the studio and will take that out on the next guy.
look Henry Cavill wasn't given a fair shake as Superman his take was dark and broody which was not the Superman a whole lot of people wanted to see and that has been the version of Superman that we had with all the Snyderverse movies all the blame goes to Zack Snyder here as he wanted to make a Batman movie but he was dumped with Superman so he turned Superman in to a pseudo Batman instead.What James Gunn is talking about here is that he wanted to deliver a close to perfect portrayal of Superman and your right whomever he chooses will be compared non stop to Henry Cavill up until the movie comes out but I really hope he delivers on that promise.
Henry Cavill wasn't an amazing Superman because he wasn't even allowed to play Superman. He was closer to Doctor Manhattan or even Lex Luthor
The main point I’m making is he was liked by the fans and did a decent job playing the man of steel but got screwed over by WB execs and the next guy is gonna have to deal with that baggage. I see the other POVs though
Yes, but it's not like that is new. Robert Pattison got similar criticism when he was cast as Batman cause all people could see in their head was the Twilight character was going to be Batman, not the actor. You're right that the criticism of whomever they pick to play Superman won't be fair, but the way you counter it is to do the job well by staying true to the character while also making it uniquely their version. If you play the character well, the criticism instantly goes away.
Whatever the reasons were, whether it was due to a lack of charisma from the actor, or because of the poor writing and direction. The fact is, that to most people, Henry Cavill's Superman, has not set a high bar to beat. Most people don't even regard that as a genuine incarnation of the Superman character. Therefore, so long as the casting, writing and direction are all on the same page of wanting to genuinely do the character justice, whoever they cast, doesn't have to do all that much to deliver a more authentic portrayal. Now, if they were aiming for improving upon Christopher Reeve's performance, that would be something else altogether, a much harder challenge to overcome.
I think the best lex Luther was in the animated series..if they can bring that kind of a presence in a movie that would be awesome 👌

Michael Rosenbaum was also the best Flash in the DCAU. I'd love to see him as an older Wally West in live action.
I always liked how the DCAU couldn’t fit in every version of the flash, so they took the best traits from all of them and made that Wally’s character. While being a great character, he also feels like a tribute to every flash that came before him

I think he would have been a good Star Lord. Didn't know he tried out for that. And yes...he is the best Lex. Even though this movie wouldn't be Smallville Superman movie.....it would be cool if he still played Lex.
It's sort of be cool to sneak it in, but the same with stuff like JK Simmons being JJ Jonahson again or Mufasa only having been played by James Earl... it just feels kind of creatively bankrupt. The worst thing this movie could do, aside from just being bad, would be to make you think of Superman 2 or Smallville or anything other than the film you're watching.

“the Batman” (Matt Reeves) perfectly captured the idea of HOPE personified in a superhero movie. and you don’t normally associate HOPE with Batman

I really hope this new Superman film is a great success. Gunn is a fantastic director and an amazing human being; I have a lot of faith in his creative direction and his love for the comic book medium.
Im glad rosenbaulm made sure to install the fact that lex has to be ruthless and serious and the little jab at snyderverse lex was brilliant, you are the best live action lex luthor Michael only clancy brown is better.
I know Snyderverse cultists will jump on this but for the record James and Michael were more referring to Gene Hackman’s lex with there digs. Someone who Gunn has been outspoken in past as not liking.

Michael’s take on Lex was incredible! You absolutely felt that longing of Lex earlier on to be like Clark, to have the love and support of his parents, the love and adoration of Launa, and the betrayal he felt when he found out Clark’s secret, which led to his decent into the villain he becomes. Michael truly is my favorite Lex, both animated and Live action. It’s also funny the subtle shots towards Jesse Eisenberg’s lex. Lol. I don’t think he’s a bad actor, he just played the role in a much different take than I think most people expected or wanted.
I think a reprise as Lex in a newly set Universe should be possible - if not maybe a multiverse Lex in the future. That would be wicked

Clancy Brown's Lex Luthor from the animated series has always been my personal favorite
Michael's take on lex is the very best sijce gene Hackman's original performance. Michael brought a special something to that character not only becsue of having 6 seasons to do it in, but he embodied the character in a way no one else ever has and as far as I'm concerned never will.
Gunn NEEDS to hire you for Lex because you are easily still the best live action depiction. We need to see you finally face off with Supes as full form Lex.

I read that Gunn’s style will be influenced by the DCAU, which I would love since I feel that is one of the best interpretations of the characters

I’ve already heard a few people backing out of SDCC appearances in order to support WGA, knowing full well that it may hurt their promoted project in the long run.

Mike did great on any number of military characters, overshadowed the titular “Clarice”, which was quietly cancelled by cbs, and was willing to go “dolphin smooth” for S&L, and he’d do a great Lex on the big screen, too.
He can actually be Jor-El tbh. I wouldn’t say Jonathan because he looks to much like Clark. But Routh can play Jonathan Kent. Since the Kent’s have gotten Clark in their 30s
I wasn't a fan of Smallville for several reasons but for the 1 1/2 seasons that I did watch Michael's Lex Luthor was easily my favorite character on the show.

Please make superman great again. Superman doesn't get sneaked up on. He doesn't just slug it out. When battling an unknown foe, he is analyze, scanning it DNA, studying it's mood and temperament. Everything he touches on Earth is like cardboard, he daintily opens door knob. His Fortress of Solitude helps block out the noise of the world so he can have moments of quiet rest. I think James Gunn can pull it off and Yes' Rosenbaum played the best Lex so far.

I wonder if Michael has asked Gunn lowkey if we'll see that Smallville animated series get the greenlight or if Welling will be Superman suit and all in either SV's universe later on again or in say Pattinson's universe which Welling did say in an interview in 2021 that he'd be willing to be that universe's Superman. Same until James gunn was announced as CEO I was ready to just not give a crap anymore, and it got even better when he said he's doing a reboot which is what I wanted to happen ever since Justice League Flopped. After that I was 100% on board he's a comic book fan so big he can really dig down to find those deep cut charachters that he wants spotlighted which is the kind of guy who SHOULD be running DC's movies.

Michael Rosenbaum and John Shea are two of my favorite Lex Luther's of all time. That said, I'm just looking forward to whatever James Gunn creates with Superman. And he's right, if I was auditioning for a role that big, I wouldn't want the world to know. It is private. Because then you become known as the "guy who didn't get it." The internet, and specifically journalists and certain fans, need to stop trying to "leak" a film. It's not conducive to the creative process.

Im thinking Nickolas Hoult for lex, couldn't see it at first, but having recently seen a few more of his films i really think the guy could play it grounded like Michael said, plus he looks great bald. Would work well across someone like corenswet as superman.

It was in this episode I realized THAT that the host was lex in small ville. I’ve seen a bunch of his clips and never recognized him
Gunn should adapt the Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow comic by Alan Moore, it seems perfect for his style.
Probably down the line would be better. Doing that right away would almost be like doing the Death of Superman story right away like Zack Snyder did with his take.

I for one cant wait to see Gunns universe, and yes you are the best Lex. I didnt watch all of Smallville but I know from clips and the seasons I did see that Rosenbaum is a severely underrated actor and deserves all the love from the DC Fans that he gets

I hope it’s Superman as a family man. Dc rebirth had a good run of comics as him as a father. It would definitely be different from what we had before. Either way I’m excited to see what they do with it.
He already said that it's going to be teenage superman, I highly doubt that Clark Kent fathered any children in his teens.

@@jeromesimon8916 - Lol yes it is bro, it's no longer "Snyderverse", but DCEU LITERALLY stands for DC Extended Universe, which is what the movies are, and the DCAU is the DC Animated Universe. The acronyms arent changing for those, it's just the "Snyderverse" that was trashed.

@@jeromesimon8916 - Because he's trying to combine EVERYTHING in DC into one cohesive universe, games, comics, movies and shows, and he wants actors to reprise their roles in EVERY iteration, ergo actors doing the voices in video games, actors likenesses in the comics... etc.
It'll never happen, the movies will be the movies and MAYBE the games could have the actors reprise their roles, but the comics and shows I highly doubt WB will spring for the amt of money that it'll cost to have actors reprise their roles in everything, because not only will it burn the actors out, but it'll cost a ton if Gunns DC Movieverse is successful in finding it's own "Robert Downey Jr" in either Batman or Superman casting, and that actor's representation will OBVIOUSLY be demanding more money if their roles become very popular.
Imagine having Robert Downey Jr voice Iron Man in all the video games and showing up in all the Marvel Netflix shows... etc...
It'll never happen, not even FEIGE could make that blanket decision for the studio, so trust me Gunn won't be able to either, even tho he's trying to make it stick.
So yes, I know my shit, it will STAY the DC Extended Universe for the films, no matter how much Gunn wants to start calling it the "DCU", the DCU name might stick, but it'll STILL be the Extended Universe in the end.
