I wouldn't say it's failed. The video has to end because he broke the rule, but the video ends anyway because it's checkmate. He's done a few videos where he didn't break the rule until the winning move. Breaking the rule only to give checkmate is fine.

Yeah, he could have taken the rook instead of moving his own rook, then go Qf8 to for a king-knight fork if his opponent doesn't anticipate it.

So it atleast blocks his rook on the e-line where the king sits.
But perhaps theres also another idea behind that move.

The “mission failed, but game won” ending is my favourite. I like that it’s rarely used even if it’s possible, making it a rare treat. It has a rebellious flaror in it that I like.

I believe that if you break the rules on the final turn that checkmates the opponent, that’s still a mission accomplished. If your goal is to steal a gem and the rule is that you have to do it without the guards hearing, but the guards hear you after you picked up the gem because you blew up the wall, the escape driver is already there and you escaped and therefore completed your mission.
No, it's more like he manages to throw the gem to his driver and the driver gets away, but the thief gets shot dead on the spot.
To me this feels more like the gem is locked in a safe that needs a key, so you intentionally let a guard hear you so you can knock them out and steal their key.
If you didn't get away clean you didn't get away.
I could see it going either way, I guess it just depends on people’s opinions, like most things.

I always like it when the winning move is against the rules.
It was hard for him to save the same from there so you could have just made 5 normal moves on king side directing those pieces towards the enemy king and then game over for him but if opponent moves something which forces you to checkmate the opponent than you could have done it. In this you could have had a chance to accomplish the mission.
